Does ANYBODY know the name of an old movie whose theme has been repeated at least once ( but probably a lot mnore often ) wherein the main character is a movie maker who is ruthless in his hunt for real life serious movie themes and along with his agent , manages to get himself imprisoned in a chain gang type penitentary with the help of the Governor . He and the other two are the only ones who know his true identity and the fact that he is researching for his new movie . Due to a series of unfortunate events his agent / manager and the Governor of the prison die unexpectedly leaving him trapped and incarcerated . He learns more than he bargained for and when our pompous friend finds himself with the other inmates at a prison showing of some cartoons or " funnies " , which he previously would have turned his nose up at , he discovers a side of his humanity he wasnt aware of and ends up roaring with laughter along with the other prisoners . I cant remember if it was B&W or in colour or if he escapes his predicament and begins to make movies to make people happy instead of depressed but this movie has stuck in my head for many years and I would love to look it up again . Can ANYBODY out there in IMDBLAND help me . Thanks for reading . Cheers . Alan

Sounds like Sullivan's Travels (1941), an excellent film.

Thank you so much for getting back to me . The name didnt ring any bells but I put it into IMDB and when I saw some of the photos I THOUGHT WE HAD IT . The photo of Joel McRea looked just like a scene in the movie but no mention of being imprisoned etc . Nevertheless it great to know somebody took the time to answer my question and I thank you very much . Cheers .Alan

On the plot summaries page, garykmcd mentions prison:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0034240/plotsummary

On the keywords page, it lists prison and chain gang.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0034240/keywords

You can probably find it among the reviews too.

From my own memory: Sullivan has his epiphany about making comedies while sitting in the audience with his fellow prisoners, everyone laughing at a cartoon.

Your description is so close to Sullivan's Travels, I'd be shocked if another film were what you meant.

I thought that as soon as I saw one of the photos with Joel McRea laughing with another prisoner but IMDB didnt mention anything about him placing himself in proson for research with the Governor and his Agent/ Manager being the only people to know he wasnt guilty of anything .. What do you think ? We have seen this senario repeated with some of our so called action heroes , who I can enjoy for what they are , but I remember thinking WHAT A DESTRUCTION OF A MEANINGFUL MOVIE !!! Im not a snob like some of those so called reviewers on BBC TV in the UK and lots of different tyoes , shall we say , have their place but its a shame younger people only get to see weak versions of the original . I have had Gary Coooers face / somebody like him in mind and Joel McRea certainly falls into that category despite the age difference . I will try and find a copy online of Sullivans Travels in case Im mistaken but the irony or the movie about a movie maker determined to make an " IMPORTANT " movie then learning the beauty of entertaining people with a " HAPPY " movie and the result , most likely intended " being a brilliant IMPORTANT movie . Thank you very very much for your help . Did you ever have a reaccuring itch that you havent been able to scratch for years lol

You may be blending the partial plot of another movie about someone being (effectively) undercover in prison and only a couple of people knowing.  See Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (1956)

Your main memory does seem to be of Sullivan's Travels though -- great related trivia at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190590/trivia?item=tr2327341

Thank you Col and I understand exactly what youre saying . I will check it out and let you know . I thought it would be a well known historical movie but then again I thought HEAVENS GATE was a masterpiece but maybe biased because I was a huge fan of the " Silver Tongued Devil " himself ( but admit to preferring his song writing to his acting ) Many thanks Col

I think Col. Needham is definitely right about your combining plots of BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT and SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS. By the way, here's the scene from SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS that you're remembering:

I need the name of an old black and white film. It starts with a small girl being visited by a woman who is a ghost but that the child doessnt know is a ghost, more of a friend who comes to see her and play. The small girl keeps finding her way to this house, where everyone is mean to her. The child doesnt know it but the ghost who is her friend is her mother. Her father has remarried but the child doesnt know it. The people in the house the small girl keeps finding her way to are her dead mothers family, and they know who she is. This movie is from the 1940, or 11950, can someone help me find the name of this old movie

Might not be an exact match, but your description kind of reminds me of THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (1944):

And here's the IMDb listing:
