I do not know whether anyone can assist with this, but I
thought I would ask.
Whilst editing Soundtrack items for Urlatori alla sbarra (1960), I came across a performer named ‘I Brutos’.
There is no entry in the IMDB ‘Names’ section for ‘I Brutos’, so it is not possible to add a QV link for the entry I was working on. There are entries for ‘I Quattro Brutos’, ‘Cinque Brutos’ and ‘Brutos’.
Intrigued by this, I did a little research.
A search of the web showed ‘I Brutos’ as the name for an Italian singing group of 50s -60s (Italian Wikipedia, https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Brutos and I Brutos homepage http://www.brutos.it/index.html.) They are also known as ‘Les Brutos’ and ‘Los Brutos’.
The founding five members of the group were Gerry Bruno, Elio Piatti, Jack Guerrini, Gianni Zullo and Aldo Maccione.
The Italian Wikipedia entry shows six entries in a filmography:
1. Urlatori alla sbarra, regia di Lucio Fulci (1960)
- the film I was working on. Its cast list only shows Aldo Maccione from the group as a member of the cast.
2. Vacanze alla baia d'argento, regia di Filippo Walter Ratti (1961)
- IMDB shows Aldo Maccione as a cast member and also has ‘I Quattro Brutos’ (as ‘Themselves’) as a cast member.
3. L'amore senza ma... (L'amour avec des si...), regia di Claude Lelouch (1962)
- appears in IMDB under the English title, “In the Affirmative”, but with a different year – 1964. It has ‘Cinque Brutos’ as a cast member.
4. Toast of the Town, regia di Tim Kiley (1962-1963) - serie The Ed Sullivan Show per la televisione degli Stati Uniti CBS
- a check of the nine episodes of “Toast of the Town” for which Tim Kiley is credited as director on IMDB does not show the group nor any of its members in the cast list or soundtrack listing. Possible sources of error for this include
- Tim Kiley may have directed other episodes for which he is not credited,
- the Wikipedia entry may be incorrect i.e. the group appeared in an episode not directed by Tim Kiley
- a couple of these cast lists seem short, and so the group may have been left out accidentally
- the group did not appear on “Toast of the Town” at all
5. I magnifici Brutos del West, regia di Marino Girolami (1964)
- IMDB has four actors listed with the character name ‘I Bruto’, three of whom are original members of the group and the fourth, Dino Cassio, was a replacement (twice removed) for Elio Piatti. This was made at a time when the group was going through personnel changes, which led to it becoming a foursome – Gerry Bruno, Gianni Zullo, Dino Cassio and Nat Pioppi
6.
Carosello di notte, regia di Elio Belletti
(1964)
- IMDB has ‘Cinque Brutos’ as a cast member.
7. Paris ist eine Reise wert, regia di Paul Martin, con Fernandel (1966) - realizzato per la televisione della Germania Ovest
- IMDB lists ‘Brutos’ as a cast member.
The group, ‘I Quattro Brutos’ and Aldo Maccione also appear in “Vivement dimanche” (TV Series) {Hommage à Sacha Distel (2007)}.
The group, ‘I Quattro Brutos’ also appears in “The Saturday Show” (TV Series) {Episode dated 11 August 1962}. Aldo Maccione is not credited for this episode.
The only references to ‘I Quattro Brutos’ that appear on a Google search are the IMDB entry and a reference in “Spaghetti Westerns--the Good, the Bad and the Violent: A Comprehensive A Comprehensive, Illustrated Filmography of 558 Eurowesterns and Their Personnel, 1961-1977” by Thomas Weisser, p. 199 (https://books.google.com.au/books?id=-RE5AwAAQBAJ&pg=PA199&lpg=PA199&dq=I+Quattro+Brutos’&source=bl&ots=OEyMQ8kmUb&sig=UV8Y77YRmithpBj3LzS2fAPNQq8&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjMt5iXlufVAhUCxLwKHfLhBDcQ6AEITDAG#v=onepage&q=I%20Quattro%20Brutos’&f=false). According to this the characters in the film, I magnifici Brutos del West, have names (Artie, Lee, Johny and Pep) rather than being called 'I Bruto'.An image search for ‘I Quattro Brutos’ and ‘I Brutos’ delivers a mixture of images, showing groups of four or five members.
So, after all that, the question is what to do with these entries.
1. Leave as is.
2. Merge the entries - ‘I Quattro Brutos’, ‘Cinque Brutos’ and ‘Brutos’ – into one, and rename it ‘Il Brutos’.
3. A combination of the above.
My gut reaction would be to merge the entries. I regard this group similar to the ‘Beach Boys’ (and other rock bands)– lots of personnel changes, but still the same band doing the same things.
