I perform a lot of research on IMDb and in the last couple of days I have noticed a problem with the order of "Highest Rated Feature Films Released in (Year)" field. It seems that the highest rated films are not coming up in the order specified. The ratings are all over the place. They jump from 8.2 down to 7.8 and back up to 8.5. I wasn't noticing this problem a few days ago. I was wondering if this is something that can be fixed? Thanks for your time.

Hi Tim,

Would you please provide a link to an example. This will make it easier to recreate and diagnose the problem your report.

Sure. Here is a link for the highest rated feature films from 2001:

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?at=0&sort=user_rating&title_type=feature&year=2001,2001

Examples (among other faults in the order) are:

#17 has a 7.8 rating while the surrounding films have 8.6
#20 has a 7.3 rating before going back to 8.6
#40 has a 7.8 sandwiched between two 8.2's and so forth.

It continues on the following pages as well. Wasn't having this problem a couple of days ago, but it is happening quite frequently now.

Tim,

The problem you report is easier to see in the compact view.

Highest Rated Feature Films Released In 2001
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&release_date=2001,2001&sort=user_rating,desc&...

If you limit your search by selection films with at least 100 votes, the problem you report does not seem to appear.

Highest Rated Feature Films Released In 2001 With At Least 100 Votes
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&num_votes=100,&release_date=2001,2001&sort=us...

The ratings with very few votes can change drastically with only a few additional votes. I suspect that there is a synchronization problem. The data on IMDb updates at different times depending upon the page. The user rating used for sorting is not the same value as what is displayed. I vaguely remember this problem occurring sometime last year.

Update:
I looked more closely at the search with at least 100 votes and the problem still occurs.

= = =

Note: I'm a long time user of IMDb and not a staff member.

Thank you for replying, Dan. I wonder how often staff members check these threads (this is my first time using the community service board).

Hi Tim,

Our technical team is unable to reproduce this issue. May I ask if you can provide screenshots showing the anomalies on your end?

Trevor,

I was originally able to verify the problem that Tim reported.

I just checked this search. The problem I saw when this was first reported does not seem to be happening. If the problem recurs, I will post a link to the search with a screen copy.

As Dan said, the problem is not appearing now. Whatever issue the site had seems to have been resolved. I want to thank you both for your diligence in this matter. It's nice to know great service still exists on the internet!
