Staff: Please provide a list of sources and evidence that are acceptable to confirm a death.

Is a Facebook post acceptable evidence?

Thanks.

Stephanie,

I've posted a note to an IMDb staff member. I'm hoping they can provide further guidance.

If the Facebook account is your sister's Teddi Siddall (AKA Theodora Siddall Cole) official Facebook account, IMDb staff may accept it as evidence. The same would probably apply for official Facebook accounts for her agent or well-known person.

This is IMDb's Official Guidelines regarding Date of Death:
Date of Birth/Date of Death
We do not remove valid dates of birth/dates of death, so please do not submit deletions.
The place of birth should be in the same form as a location in the locations list, with the city (if applicable) and country, plus whatever other subdivisions are appropriate for the country (i.e., state - examples: Los Angeles, California, USA; London, England, UK, etc.)
The place of birth/death should reflect the political divisions at the time. In cases where divisions or place names have changed over time, it is acceptable to show the current place names within [square brackets]. If the name of the birth place has changed, list the new name as [now ...] i.e. here. If the territory of the birth place has changed, list the name of the current territory as [now in...] i.e. here.
A list of the locations currently being used can be displayed by clicking on the gray list icon ( ) next to the place field.
We do not consider Wikipedia (or other collaboratively edited wiki-style sites) to be an acceptable source for birth dates. However, many Wikipedia articles include online citations and external links which provide supporting evidence of the subject's birth date, and these are often appropriate URLs to include in your submission.
We are looking for links to public records, printed publications, or official documents.
We do allow social media links to be an acceptable source for birthdates (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)
If submitting a date of birth for a minor under 18 years of age, you must include a URL confirming the year of birth. We will no longer accept DOBs for minors without supporting evidence.
We do hold some BC/BCE birth and death dates, but at the moment it's not possible to add this type of data through our submissions system. If you have data like this that you wish to add, please contact us using the form below and we'll be glad to help.

Hi Stephanie -

I'm sorry for your loss.  When verifying death dates our editors require an online source for verification purposes, ideally we are looking for links to public records, printed publications, or official documents.  We also may consider relevant social media announcements.  If you have further online evidence or a link to a death announcement you are welcome to include that within your submission.  For further details on the types of sources we are looking for please review our Date of Birth/Date of Death Guide.

Michelle, please describe the steps to privately share evidence. Is there an option other than drop box sharing that I can use?

Thank you.

There is no obituary or press release. My late sister's resting place is Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills. Her name is Theodora Siddall Cole.

Date of birth: August 12, 1953

Date of death: February 4, 2018

She was also known as Teddi Siddall.

I believe that she was a registered member.

News of her passing appeared on IMDb from March 27 to April 13 when for some reason the date of death was removed. Teddi sadly has passed.

Hi Stephanie Siddall Germack,

Sorry to hear of the death of your sister.

This appears to be IMDb's filmography / name page for your sister:
Teddi Siddall (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0796493/).

Even though there is no obituary or press release for you sister's death, California would still have a death certificate for her. You could provide an image of that death certificate to IMDb.

Although, you could post an image of your sister's death certificate in this thread, given the sensitive nature of your sister death you most likely would not wish to do so.

You can provide this information to IMDb with a free IMDb account. You do not need an IMDb Pro account.

Why should I register on IMDb?

Easily create an IMDb account using Facebook, Google, or Amazon to:

• Get personalized recommendations and discover new movies and shows you'll love
• Create your Watchlist to track everything you want to watch and get notified when movies open in theaters
• Rate all the movies and shows you've seen to improve your recommendations
• Share a review of your favorite movies and shows with the world's largest community of entertainment fans
• Contribute data to IMDb that will be seen by millions of people and get cool badges

To create your IMDb account, please go to the Registration page.
Once you've registered on IMDb, we can guide you on how best to submit this information.

I've flagged this thread for staff attention so they may offer additional guidance.

Note: I am a long time user of IMDb, not a staff member.

I'm now registered. Due to privacy issues it would not be appropriate to post the death certificate.

Hi Stephanie,

In what city did your sister die?

I will submit the request for you once I know where your sister died. I will reference this thread and indicate that you've submitted the supporting information via drop box and have communicated with the help desk.

It would also be helpful if you provide your IMDb user name. For reference, this is my IMDb user name and user ID:
dan_dassow
https://www.imdb.com/user/ur0127678/

You could do this yourself. However, it can be confusing if you have not done it before.

IMDb does not make it easy to communicate directly with a person staffing the help desk.

Hi Stephanie,

When you are logged into IMDb your user name is located in the upper right hand corner of most IMDb pages. This is an example:

Clicking on your name brings you to your profile page. The link for your profile page contains your user ID. This is a link my profile page:
https://www.imdb.com/user/ur0127678/?ref_=nb_usr_prof_0

The processing times for death dates is currently 7 days. I will monitor IMDb's page for your sister to ensure her death date appears.

Again, my condolences on the death of your sister. I hope that we can resolve updating your sisters death date soon.

If you mean an actor's death by any chance, start here, "https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/categories/imdb_imdb_contentdata_issues?utm_source=notification&...", and use the keyword "death".

Hi Jesus Martinez,

Thank you for your comment. However, this does not address the key problem that Stephanie faces. IMDb originally listed the death of her sister on their name page for her. The date of death was removed, probably because there was no obituary or press release they could use for confirmation. Without proof of death, IMDb staff is unlikely to accept a user submission for the death. IMDb does not want to wrongly report the death of a person listed in their database.

I've asked an IMDb staff member to provide additional guidance.

Dan, The initial listing of my sister's passing was added by someone else unknown to me. I have seen other posts in which family members have submitted verification other than an obit or a press release that were accepted by IMDb. It will be helpful to learn each of the forms of verification and sources that are acceptable. Thanks.

Hi Stephanie -

Just to follow-up and clarify further, the death date was not approved because we were unable to verify the source provided within the original submission.  As Dan mentioned above, we will need to verify the date before we can have it listed on the site, I noted some details in my above reply concerning what sources we are looking for.

Death date submissions are reviewed privately by IMDb staff only, you are welcome to upload your documents to a secure site and provide us with those secure upload links in the submission form for our staff to take a look.  Unfortunately, as Dan noted, without proper evidence we cannot approve the information.

I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Stephanie,

IMDb added the death date and location of death for your sister, Teddi Siddall.
