It depends on where you are searching for the keyword. If you are using the search bar at the top of any page, it disappears quite quickly for me, usually overnight. If you are talking about in the suggestions when you are entering keywords in the edit form, I don't think it ever disappears. In fact, I've seen lots of suggestions in that area that have no titles attached to them (usually because they are misspelled and someone corrected them.)

I'm sorry to say that you are correct, the keywords do not disappear from this menu even when empty.
We did do a bulk clean-up of these last year though.

In the edit form, grindhouse is accepted, but so is grind-house, which is also suggested when I enter a misspelling:
