How to credit the writer/novelist on the Casteel Family movies

Okay, no laughing here but I have a guilty pleasure of watching the trashy movies on Lifetime. The Casteel Family series is based on 5 novels written under the name V.C. Andrews; however, V.C. Andrews did not write all the books, though they were published under her name.

The first two movies are easy. Heaven and Dark Angel were both solely written by V.C. Andrews, so no question here.

The next movie is where it gets tricky. Fallen Hearts was started by V.C. Andrews but she died before finishing it and it was finished by Andrew Neiderman. Should the credits look like:

Virginia C. Andrews     (based upon the novel by) (as V.C. Andrews)      2,1,1
Andrew Neiderman      (based upon the novel by) (as V.C. Andrews)      2,1,1

The final two books, Gates of Paradise and Web of Dreams, were published after V.C Andrews died so she had nothing to do with them. Should the credit only be like (with no credit for the actual V.C. Andrews has she had nothing to do with them?):

Andrew Neiderman      (based upon the novel by) (as V.C. Andrews)      2,1,1

Hi Adrian -

The credit listing should directly reflect the on-screen credits.  For "Fallen Hearts", were both "Virginia C. Andrews" and "Andrew Neiderman" credited under "based upon the novel by"?

For the other two titles, if Virginia C. Andrews was credited on-screen for these episodes, then she should have the credit (even though she didn't write the books), and you could include a "credit only" attribute.

V.C. Andrews is the only "based upon the novel by" on screen credit for all 5 movies. The 5 books were published under her name, even when written or co-written by "Andrew Neiderman". (He's written more than just these two books under his name.) At this point, V.C. Andrews is more a pen name than an actual person.

I'm sure there are similar situations, say with Nancy Drew books which were all published under one name despite being written by various people.

Interesting question. And there are also artists who didn’t actually sing on their records (Milli Vanilli comes to mind off the top of my head).

Hi Adrian -

So in this case, as V.C. Andrews was credited on all 5 films, then her credit should be listed, though as mentioned previously, if you are certain that she didn't write some of books, you can include the "credit only" attribute next to those applicable credits.  If you have reliable evidence to verify that Andrew Neidermann was the actual writer or co-wrote the books for some of these titles,  you may submit an "uncredited" credit for his role as a writer.

Thanks. It seems to be a well know fact that Neidermann co-wrote the third and wrote the fourth and fifth book. I'll change the credits on the third, fourth and fifth movies to be like this. I'll probably add a trivia item as well to explain it to people that may see it and not know what it means.
