I've moderated for many forums over the years and I'm tired of watching IMDB boards slip into a downward spiral of trolls.

Does IMDB even have non-staff moderators? I can't seem to find any information on the topic. Most public forums rely on volunteers to keep up with the volume of moderation that needs to be done. IMDB is one the largest forums in the world and I would think they would be happy to have at least a few volunteers.

Any information on this subject?

For example the GOT boards have devolved into nothing but off-topic spam and constant bickering. You seem to get constant threats of being reported for even attempting to talk about the show that the board is for. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0944947/board/threads/

Also, is there some limit to the number of times you can use report? There's more than 100 spam/flame/troll threads on the forum right now and it seems like I'm not even allowed to report the problems anymore.

No.  Unfortunately there are no active moderators.  Employees respond to the reports of abuse but no one actively watches and moderates.

There can be a limit on reports of one user.  You'll get a message to the effect of "we have enough reports of abuse..." that appears and lasts until the reports can be handled.  There's no indication of what the max is.

You have to be careful though, with reporting one account too often.  It can result in getting your own account on the system's ignore list. The best thing to do with an account that has posted many abusive comments or spammed/flooded, is to use the "none of the above" reason and explain what the user is doing.

If the site is interested in doing as you describe...I'd certainly vote for you to fill one of the spots!  Many, many boards could benefit greatly!

That's really a shame. In 15 years I don't think I've ever seen a forum this size that does not use volunteer help to manage it. It's no wonder it's so prone to being over run by trolls.

I agree.  I am sure there's a lot of people who wouldn't mind doing it and would do a great job.

Thanks for bringing it up

Me and Vincent are of similar minds on this, and as he has responded sympathetically to a post I made on this subject, I will reply here with my thoughts on IMDB.

This is something I would definitely volunteer my services as a moderator for, on limited forums, or even just one forum.

I have always contended that it's not the regulars, pro- or con-, believer or skeptic, that is the problem. We get into arguments and debates all the time. But the troll personality is VERY different from all of this. Just go to the Finding Bigfoot forum and see for yourself, there are a handful of personalities that ONLY bad mouth, slander, defame, poke, prod, provoke, instigate...and some of these have never actually seen the show, and don't even talk about the show. They came to troll, their purpose is to troll, they only want to engage in endless provocation, but contribute zero substance to the micro community. You can see who's who by who the majority engages with or does not engage with.

It's a pipe dream, IMDB doesn't really care about their property, they are like slum lords.

By the way, the way IMDB handles people who do too much reporting, as they have with me (I am blocked from posting now) is to force us to "verify" our accounts. As I have already verified, and they aren't sending me an SMS code to verify my account, basically they are telling me the trolls are the real winners on their discussion boards.
