I don't believe there is a way to do that. You can vote up the idea as suggested here https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/setting_imdb_trailers_to_hd_720p_as_default_not_480_default
Note that the reply that says it's probably set to default to standard def to preserve bandwidth got a "like" from Giancarlo, an official rep, and is likely the reason they have not done so yet. I would bet that they will go ahead at some point, though...when that might be???....

Am I missing something? It seems pretty RELEVANT to me, since I have to switch every trailer to HD, which causes the sound to double up half the time.
If the reason suggested above is accurate, it seems a bit hard to believe IMDb is SO hurting for revenue that they can't spring for the extra bandwidth required to fix this truly annoying issue (and provide a better user experience).
