how do you get rid of the stupid ads?

this used to be a very useful site, but now I'm just getting incessant ads and can't actually navigate to anyplace useful. ideas?

Is the navigation issue related to the ads? If the ads are effecting the navigation then:

There is a problem with the ads that needs fixing.
You have malware which is injecting extra ads into the webpage - this has come up a few times on here especially when the ads are not of the sort IMDB would host (porn, for example) or they overly/obscure the content. It'd certainly be worth checking this - I use the free version of Malwarebytes for this kind of thing.

In either case, can you provide a screenshot?

On the ad front: I use an ad blocking browser plugin and haven't seen ads on IMDB for years.

I can't recreate the problem, but the ad was a full screen ad for a movie (hence probably not malware), on a new tab in my browser. When I closed the new tab and went back to the original one, the link I was trying to follow hadn't been followed.

The large ads usually have an X or a close symbol on them in the upper corner

The ads can be stopped by Ad-Blocker? I have encountered the same pop ads labeled as candlejar and a guide helped me remove them. You can check whether the PC is infected by adware and run some remover tools to solve the problem.
