Huge data use! Clocked up 1.4GB of data on app. Never happens before (in over a decade of use). Is IMDB now running background functions that could account t for this? Not happy!

The IMDb iOS app does not use Background App Refresh and cannot download anything while the app is unused. While the app is in use, the only significant use of data is for displaying videos and photos that are displayed immediately on-screen.

We haven't made any large changes to the amount of data it uses in years. However, when playing videos it will select the highest quality stream that your internet connection is capable of viewing without interruption. Videos will use higher quality streams (with more data consumed) as your cellular provider improves your connection speed.

Also, on devices with larger screens such as the iPhone 7 Plus and iPad Pro, the app will download larger higher resolution images than on smaller screens.
