I am trying to paste a review from my Wordpress blog but am told that my review contains "characters that are not latin-1 compatible.". I am trying to post from my iMac. I've tried pasting the review into TextEdit and copying from there rather than Wordpress but I get the same issue.

This is because you are getting non ascii characters when you copy and paste.
You either have to type the review word by word or try and strip out the non ascii characters before pasting. Notepad and others don't often work.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with ASCII -- what does that mean?

It means you often can't copy and paste from a website into IMDb. Often there are characters IMDb does not support.
The only sure way I know is to type it in.

MacOS might not machine-code characters the same way as IMDb system is ready to accept and "read" them. I am a Windows user, and so unfamiliar with MacOS, but I think typographic characters such as ' might be the cause.
The best workaround would be to paste first your text in a very dumb word processor or a note application with no character formatting, and then do a further copy-and-paste unto IMDb.
Hope this helps.

I did try to paste it into TextEdit, which seems to be the most basic word processor on here, and then copy and paste that into IMDb, but it had the same error. :/

Just paste the text it should do it automatically for you.

There's a drop-down menu in the input section with multiple options. The default is "plain text" which I assume is not what I want since the output is also set to "plain text".

Don't worry about that, just paste it in and it will change it for you with plain text output.
