Thank you, but I have tried this three times and the same message of “Email already associated with an account” keeps appearing. So, whereas I can continue to change my password until the cows come home, I can’t change my email address – and THAT seems to be the problem. So I am back to my original frustration – i.e. what can I do to resolve this glitch?

You say “If you're recovering the old account,” but the whole point of all this is that, as far I know, I do not yet have an account with IMDb. Why should I? After all, I’m trying to register an account as a NEW user/member. I can only repeat: I do not have, nor have I ever had, an IMDb account. I simply want to enter my email address and my password and become registered. I shouldn't have to have the IQ of Einstein to achieve this simple task. It’s something we all day several times a year with this or that organization - but something, somewhere, is blocking my pathway. Help!

You say you have reset the IMDb password that goes with that email. Therefore you have the two items needed to log in to that account. Since you have changed the password, noone else can login. Don't try to Register; Log in!
Once you have logged in you can change the User ID if it isn't appropriate, or if you want to reset everything, delete the account, wait a day and create a new one. But note that if you do this you will not be able to use the User ID that is currently on that account; once deleted they cannot be reused.

I had overlooked what should have been the obvious: stop tying to register and just log in. And it worked!
