I'm a member for 11 years, never did anything abusive, and now all of a sudden you want my phone number or credit card info to keep posting?

This is not a new account or an account that's had problems. It's outrageous that I've been contributing to the community for over a decade and all of a sudden I'm told that to prevent abuse you want my phone number or credit card information.

Many years ago they started requiring all new users who wanted access to specific actions (posting on the boards being one of them) to provide that information, but existing users were grandfathered in.

Did you perhaps try to login via a different method than normal (for example, via Facebook)?  That could have set you on a path to create a new account, which would have required the new authentication process.

How many years ago?  My home page shows that I have been an active member for 5 years.  It also shows that I have validated my account, but IMDB asks me for my phone #/CC# when I try to respond to someone.  When I enter my phone information, I never receive a text!

The strange thing - it seems I am able to write reviews?  Logic?

Authorization was implemented primarily, I believe, to help reduce the problems (flaming/spamming) in the Forums. (Yes, it was actually worse than now.)

Reviews require more work, must be at least t0 lines, have restrictions on the words that can be used, and are subject to checking. Trolls are, in general, not going to use them to abuse the system.

It was more than five years ago. Authentication (via cc# or cell text) and verification (a link click in an email to verify that you own that email address) are two separate steps.
