What did you do to the home page? It' horrific. It looks like a throwback to the days of Tripod and Angelfire web hosting. If the look you were going for was "Completely Unprofessional," well, you nailed it.

Hello everyone,

My name is Crystal and I work at IMDb. I want to thank everyone for providing your feedback on the new desktop homepage. We review all your submissions and really appreciate the candid feedback this community provides about how changes impact you.

I hope it will be helpful to address a few items:

  1. We are still rolling the changes out, so this update is not viewable to all users yet and some may be seeing the old homepage.
  2. News is still available and can be found in the main menu separated out by Movie News, TV News, and Celebrity News.
  3. We are listening to your feedback and really care about what is impacting your experience. Please feel free to go into details as it is often helpful as we investigate solutions.
I want to thank you again for your passion and taking time to provide your perspective, we we’ll continue to monitor this thread so please stay tuned for updates.

- Crystal

Hi Crystal. I'm glad to see an IMDb employee joining this thread. What brought about this streamlining update that blends so much into the mediocrity of today's poor website formats? As I've said, having a primarily information website such as this merge with XL panels, which are the least important information on IMDb, will kill the website. If it's not broken, don't fix it. You are the only website of this kind out there, and if there are others, they're nowhere near as successful. You have a monopoly of this sort of resource, so don't change. Look at Facebook. They haven't made any large alterations to their website in over four years, and that's because they know people have no choice but to use their website, and people complain when they change things anyway. This will only the hurt the traffic you get on your website. This new format won't bring any excess traffic because it looks like a sterile and non-user-friendly website now.

It's obvious Crystal is IMDb's sacrificial lamb since this is her first post. Let's not take out our anger on her, but the people who designed this atrocious homepage. If this is their future, I do not want to be part of it. They not only shot themselves in the foot, they put the pistol to their temple and pulled the trigger. R.I.P. IMDb.

That's a great idea, but I wouldn't depend on IMDb doing it! It's confusing enough getting on the right thread on these boards. I think IMDb likes it this way. "We gotta keep 'em separated!"

Hello,

The very first time I saw the new design I said to myself "wtf is this?"
Imdb is mainly an information site for me; I come here to check news, box office and mostly 'comments', not just to see photos, videos, trailers, etc. I have been visiting Imdb for 5-6 years maybe and I hardly remember watching a trailer here, simply because it takes longer to load compared to youtube (same for, rotten tomatoes as well). So for me, if Imdb continues with this design, which apparently tries to stick only huge visual stuff into my eyes, then sorry, I'm out.

I have not seen it.
But my fellow users "Worldwide" Hate it.

Typical corporatist culture... send in a new, probably young employee (Crystal), while Col Needham (who is usually very active here) hides behind Jeff Bezos' skirt.

Now ban me for the 17th time.

I think you could do nothing better than immediately start rolling back in the other direction. Once that is done, fire everyone who thought this was a good idea so they can't to more damage in the future.

Hi, Crystal. I maybe would like the black better, if the page wouldn't have lost funtionality. I remember the old Home of IMDb. I wonder why you had to change the design. Do you wanna make new friends in the younger (smart phone) generation? That's ok by me, but there are pages that manage both: New design on mobiles, old design on PC.
In general I want to know you that me and anyone I know don't like changes on websites. To change the desing of a website so radically as IMDb did, is for most of my friends and fellows like redubbing a movie. Nobody in Germany likes redubs of old classics. If it would be better in many points, there would be more people who would agree with the change, but there would still be some people who want the old dub. And so it is or websites. People get used to a design, they see it every day and want it so.
When it is much more easier to find the wanted information, nobody would complain about that point. Just more images won't do. I know that the old design was pretty sober, but IMDb is a site about information. It was good as it was.

Hi Crystal, please find below some personal tips to improve the new home page:
  1. Everything is too big: nowadays most desktop users have a 24" or 27" screen and on such a screen, the home page looks like an enormous mobile phone. Some items are really huge: they take one third of the screen. Please make everything a little bit smaller so you can fit more items on the screen. Now the overview is completely lost. On the old home page I had to click "page down" only 4x to get to the bottom, now it's 6x with much less information.
  2. News is really important for everybody and a main reason to come back often, so please bring it back to the home page. Because isn't this essentially what you want: visitors who come back regularly?
  3. Please keep a permanent "Featured Poll" on the home page which is visible without scrolling, because again, this is a reason for visitors to come back and to come on a regular basis. And please, please add a permanent link to the other polls because otherwise only a couple of 100 users will ever know that there are other polls somewhere out there on IMDb.
  4. The "Recently viewed" section at the bottom takes a lot of space from the home page and is completely unnecessary. I don't need to be reminded each time when I visit the IMDb home page which searches I recently did on IMDb. A button in the drop down menu of my account with "recent searches" would perfectly do the same job and saves a lot of space, e.g. for a permanent spot of the "Featured Poll".
  5. Finally don't overuse the right-scrolling, Netflix-scrolling or mobile phone right-sweeping or whatever you want to call it, because that's not what people do on a desktop. They can not scroll by touching the screen so you have to use your mouse to do this which takes a lot of time. Good tip: make the items smaller and make them all fit on one screen. You will get a lot more hits on all the items, I'm sure!
I hope you will take my constructive feedback into consideration which is really meant to improve the IMDb experience for everybody!

If this is going to be the new homepage consider me an ex-user! I have been a member of IMDb for over 25 years and I've never seen a total disregard for functionality as I have seen in this new homepage. What you are asking us to do, with what took a single click on the old homepage, now takes three clicks! How is that an improvement? It seems to me all you care about is pulling in people who only use their cellphones, as this new homepage looks like something a teen puked out after drinking too much Mountain Dew! I'm all for small changes here and there, but what you are doing is butchering the homepage so it is unusable. Please rethink this!

I have a 13 inch Dell laptop and I'm using Chrome as a browser:
1) When I click Menu, not all menu items fit on the screen, there is no scroll bar to get to Celeb News (as an example)
2) When I open home page, there is a huge black empty space between top menu bar and the first content window (like 1/3 of the screen)
3) When I click on a video and it opens and starts playing, it doesn't fit on my screen and it is muted so I have to scroll down, unmute it, then start playback from the beginning (since I miss about 5 seconds of each video while I do all that). VERY ANNOYING
4) No news on the home page. I liked news on the first page.
5) Don't like the black colour theme on the home page.

I really like what you did with your mobile app.

Hey all,
What's up with this new, blackness for background, home view?

Who approved this? And whoever suggested it, why?

Most movies have more dark-ish background, so why is IMDB trying to top that off and blend everything in with ABSOLUTE BLACKNESS

Is there a way to switch this eye strain off, please?
Appreciated,

But why should you have to do this? Fight IMDb with all your might and let them know that what they are doing is not only a big mistake, it will also cause a mass exodus of veteran viewers. This change is only good for attention deficit people, not people with thinking brains! I refuse to use "shortcuts" when I was able to get what I wanted with one click before this new, "improved" homepage was introduced. It's garbage!

I understand where you are coming from, but we live in a time where we think the other guy will get things done without us lifting a finger.  We need to ride IMDb's ass to let them know that this new homepage is unacceptable to us. We do not need a side-scrolling piece of puke looking us in the face every time we log on to their site. We need to let them know that. Sure, there are workarounds to this "problem", but why should we resort to them when we had it all in front of us and only one click away? If I want Netflix, I'll subscribe to it! Keep the pressure on!

Good to see that there are still people with brains in their heads. One of the first things I do after I woke up and eat breakfast is to visit this site. In the last days I visit IMDb before breakfast because when I see the new 'design' in the Homepage it makes me wanna PUKE. If I want to see Netfix, I will go to see Netfix. I can't see this DISGUSTING thing. It's GROSS. This blackness is UNWATCHABLE. It's like I am stuck in a hole somewhere in hell. Everything is so big which is annoying. I would have liked it if I had myopia and didn't wear glasses. The persons who made this 'design' (God make it 'design') should go home drink a cup of tea and go to sleep. They have no sense of taste. I am a member of this site for 7 years and I have never been so frustrated. It's a real shame. As time goes by the site goes from best to worst....

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Language settings not working.

After the new layout of the site was released, the site is no longer using the setting to display the language you chose on the settings, it is using the location setting, I set my language to be displayed in english, and it is displaying everything in brazilian portuguese.

It worked fine before your site update, this is considerably frustrating because I only watch movies on their original language.

Terry Jones died at age of 77. One of the Monty Pythons. A few days ago it would have been a news, that stood on your front page. I got it by t-onlin.de and Focus online. after that I searched your celebrity news, movie news and tv news. Nothing! Sorry, but that homepage design is a downgrade! Formerly I always got such news first on IMDb. :(

It seems to me that they don't think it's important to mention the death of an actor and write a text about it. It's more 'important' to make the homepage look alike Netfix.

Breumaster, et al,

I am currently seeing the older version of the IMDb Home Page.

At the time of your (Breumaster's) post, the older version did not show Terry Jones's death. It is now currently being shown under Top News:

Likewise, Terry Jones's death was not recorded on his IMDb name page at the time of Breumaster's post. It now appears on his page:
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001402/

Why show us links to other sites when this thread is about IMDb? Quit this useless behavior. It's not accomplishing anything. We are longtime users of IMDb and don't care about shortcuts to Wikipedia. Nearly all of us use that site as it is and don't need links to it!

Paok,

I generally dislike web pages that are primarily dark.

Without having access to the new version of the IMDb Home page, I have a hard time accessing the new version.

I will live with the new design. However, I will not be pleased if there is a significant reduction in functionality or it requires a more work to get to information.

Thank you guys. It looks a little like it's becoming more complicated. I'm glad to know that there will be a section for top-news, so I can go there once a day. I just visited the three news sections I saw on first sight and thought, that such a news has to be on top of the others. Now I have click some more. I searched a little and found out that Terry Jones had a rare form of dementia, which also causes communitacion problems. I was sorry for hearing that. The core of my post is, that I didn't get it with one look at the IMDb-site as it formerly was. Normally I got such news from IMDb at least a few hours up to some days earlier than from other media. It was most time a difference of a half to one day, until it appeared in the other e-papers.

I think it's right to say that new interested people will see the design and will not associate the site with a serious information media, which it still is. I think it will deter the more serious interested new users. :(

IMDb is going the way of the dodo. Sad that they are going extinct under the weight of their own computer code. They are serious about the new homepage, even though thousands (maybe millions) of people will quit using the site. I being one of them. They just don't seem to care. What is wrong with people today? I want to get mad, but all I feel is sadness.

Hello,

I'm quite puzzled by the appearence of the front page now. Is it a problem ? First of all, the black makes the page difficult to read. But the worse is the lack of content. The news are vanished and there are mainly "what to watch" or "look a movie star says something" features, plus the BO (another billion for Disney, yaaay...). Is it IMDb now : superficial, bling features and commercials for Prime ?
Our revels now are ended...

Did anyone know that actor John Karlen (DARK SHADOWS and Emmy Award® winner for his role of Harvey Lacey on CAGNEY & LACEY) passed away yesterday? Well you wouldn't have known it if you looked at IMDb's new "improved" homepage! Their old homepage would have definitely announced it, but not this piece of trash they call a homepage. This is why I'm gone from this place. Everything suffers for the name of "New & Improved"! IMDb should be ashamed of themselves. They are three clicks away from an eternity in Hell.

The new setup for the sight is terrible.  It seems all over the place.  Makes my head hurt trying to navigate through it.  And the trailers page sucks.  All trailers were muted by default.  Then about a week ago, IMDB reverted back to the old setup.  And audio played right off the bat, I didn't have to miss the first few seconds I unmuted it.  Awesome!  But now, they put it back to the new crappy way, and I have to keep unmuting trailers.  If it ain't broke, don't mess with it.  That has always been sage advice.

I'm really surprised more people aren't complaining about it, but IMDb keeps these boards pretty well hidden, don't they? There's a reason for that.

Don't forget they have ways of tracking how the site is used. If site activity is down and the demand on the server is down then that proves that the changes have effected page hits overall. Less hits on the pages = lost revenue to parent corporation Amazon. That's the more logical explanation for reversing the change.

To me, in Brazil, the homepage didn't return to normal. It is still that hideous black thing.
