IMDb has been around so long and refined so many times that competing services will likely never catch up. IMDb is THE "go to" source for movie and TV information, IMO.
However, IMDb has a lot of room to grown in terms of Social Networking. If it's not going to be social, that's okay; but if it's going to tease us with lists, profiles, polls, reviews, etc., then it needs to go ahead and fill in the blanks.
The current status of all things social at IMDb is very convoluted and fragmented. I would like to see the addition of or improvements related to the following:

The current status of all things social at IMDb is very convoluted and fragmented. I would like to see the addition of or improvements related to the following:
- Build on the use of Compared to you statistics. Allow searching and sorting of other users to find the most similar users (overall or possibly by genre, location, age, etc.).
- Lists pages do not have mobile or m.imdb/xxx formating. This is needed as most of being social is on mobile devices and on the go.
- Refine the interface for message boards and following friends. The current interface is reminiscent of Usenet from the early 1990s. It should be upgraded to work and look closer to the modern streams and comment sections that are common today.
