and therefore will never make the Top 250, even if it deserves a place on the list:
"The Defenders" (1961-65)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054531/reviews
Consider these typical excerpts from viewers' reviews:
This landmark TV series (1961-65) was years ahead of its time. It [dealt with] many contemporary stories from the headlines and did so with uncompromising depth. ...
This was an amazing show -- tackling issues headfirst
that other shows wouldn't even mention. ...
... This was one of those shows that broke [every] taboo with subjects that were too rowdy for television back then. This show was the [forerunner of] other successful courtroom shows to follow. ...
... Incredibly groundbreaking ....
Was this the best dramatic TV series ever? ...
... This was the most socially conscious show ever.
... The bottom line is that this show was incredibly groundbreaking because if was one of the first TV shows to deal with contemporary controversial social issues, something no other show before or on on at the same time did, making it one of the most realistic shows of its time. it also paved the way for socially conscious shows that came after it. ...
THE WIRE, DEADWOOD, MAD MEN, OZ, BREAKING BAD and THE SOPRANOS are all good shows. Put in the context of their eras, not one compares to what THE DEFENDERS achieved. It still has the power to enrage. ... THE DEFENDERS was a top-30 show when there were only three channels. It won 13 Emmies .... There's a reason both MAD MEN and BOSTON LEGAL paid tribute to THE DEFENDERS ....(I apologize for the length of these excerpts that I chose to include here. All credit attribution goes to the authors, whose user names can be found on the review page at the link above.)
The aforementioned series is just one example (among others) of a good show that seems to be too old for the Top 250. (The show has only 232 user rating votes!)
I previously suggested the idea of a "Top Classic TV" list -- or, I'm now thinking, multiple lists by decade -- preferably curated by volunteers. Of course, such lists would naturally begin with the most famous golden oldies -- but the "curated" sections of such lists could also include unjustly neglected classics that have low vote counts but deserve to be honored.

Both of these, or one or the other, are why individual titles are not on the list.

This algorithm needs to be more precise and factor in a lot more variables for it to be more accurate.
In my opinion at least.

I love to see this new top 250. Personally I don't think the minimum votes should be increased. I check and out of all the tv series in the database only a little above 1000 have 5,000 votes, so we are watching at over 20% of all eligible titles. The lower minimum compared to movies allows for lesser known but respectable tv series to find their place in the list and to be dicovered by more curious people, otherwirse it would only be a list of most popular series.
Also I don't join my voice to those who want to separate documentaries, if fantastic series have convinced so many people of their value in a way that four of them are in the top 10, then its perfect for them to get the recognition and extra exposure win by those fantastic places. I know documentaries are not allowed in the regular top 250, but that's something I personally don't share, congratulations to cosmos and Planet Earth for their fantastic showing. And if there are vote manipulators giving it one, then shame on them, but it should be known by know that this rating only picks regular voters precisely to avoid that gross manipulation to take effect, if there are thousands of new #1 votes for Planet Life after the release of the top 250 then it has not worked cause the series is still going strong, and now I'm interested in watching it and eventually will.

Great post. If we currently applied the same 25,000 benchmark as for movies, the 250th best show would be rated 7.2, and there would only be 281 eligible shows. Sure, you could cut down that list but to me that defeats the purpose. If your top movies list can have 250, then TV can and should as well. If anything, I would lower the benchmark even more, but I'm willing to accept 5,000 as a compromise.
As for documentaries, I 100% agree. What I do find surprising is that no news shows made it onto the list. (I count stuff like The Daily Show or John Oliver's show as talk shows) Yet so many people watch the news every day. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. From many of the comments here, that seems to be in line with so many people wanting to have some sort of separation between their entertainment and their learning/news/non-fiction/documentary-watching. At least, I hope it's a case of wanting separation rather than simple disinterest in the various documentary/news/whatever programs.

There are a lot of great shows missing from this list. The Buffy fans are already up in arms. No Dark Shadows? No Outer Limits? Why are only a select few cartoons listed - No Scooby Doo of Looney Tunes? My Favorite Martian, Mr. Ed and 100 others. It would have been wise to consult your base before releasing this list.

The list is ok, but the bulgarian series Под Прикритие Pod Prikritie are missing:

It has very high rating from over 22 000 users and should be in top 50.

How do you know what "regular" users voted?

one account with above 100 titles is called regular voter
re:
And to be a Top1000 voters must have 1.000+ titlles . Now depends on Top1000 voters , now it requires more then 1000 titlesThis is also not true. The top 1,000 is the top 1,000. There are probably hundreds of thousands with over 1,000 ratings. They cannot all be in the top 1,000. I have thousands but am not a top 1,000 voter.
And, of course, top 1,000 also has nothing to do with the top 250 lists and has nothing to do with this discussion.
You also don't know if something was "banned from the list" which makes no sense anyway, so maybe you should stop posting things as fact when you clearly don't know what you're talking about.
