So, not really odd if it's rating is lower than the lowest on the list.

Breaking bad should be no 1 in the top 250 tv. It has way more votes than band of brothers and game of thrones second. The amount of votes should be a more influential factor.

It has enough votes to make the list and a borderline rating good enough. So I assume "As voted by regular IMDb users" is the issue and that going by "regular" users votes, that it's combined rating is a bit lower. Still, it's borderline and could make the list over time based on its rating and the ratings of those just above it. This is not a one-time list but one that is fluid and changes as votes change, get added, etc.

I can see that a lot of people are suggesting many changes but this is a great start and those are some great shows :)

Although I thought it was quite appropriate that someone critiqued that the entire "Planet Earth" was ranked only 2nd, with the "Band of Brothers" being ranked ahead of the Planet at #1. The Band is but a small part of the Planet, and cannot surely be ranked ahead of her.

The IMDb made a couple of errors in it's listing, the weekly series had 14 Episodes not 11, and the DVD Cover that accompanies the listing is Discover Channel's when clearly it was produced by the BBC. David Attenborough would be turning over in his grave right now if he had passed away, but he is happily still alive and kicking.

This is for all the people who are thinking negative about IMDb and its latest creation, the Top 250 TV list.
BTW I am glad to announce that like many IMDb Top 250 movie polls finally we have made our first IMDb Top 250 TV poll.
Poll Name: IMDb Top 250 TV Series
Poll URL: http://www.imdb.com/poll/MYGGE_s05ls/
Thank you.

With all the respect to all who wants an increase in votes limit, i don't think TV has that much regular voters, if minimum votes limit is increased for example to 25000, many good productions which deserved its place in top 250 will be out of the list. for example "Samurai Champloo","Doctor Who (1963–1989)","Red Dwarf"...
Actually i wonder if vote limit is increased to 25000, will there be enough (250) title to list?

If a list goes by the votes of users, that means "a lot of people" like it. Just because it doesn't suit your taste doesn't mean the system should change.

The limit of having at least 5k votes is ok, even though I believe slightly higher (10k) might be a bit better. I believe that TV shows in general have fewer votes than movies, therefore the limit should be below the 25k from the Top 250 Movies list.
I would however not include documentaries. After all, there are none in the Top 250 Movies either. Maybe a separate list of the Top 250 Documentaries including both movies and TV shows would be nice.

1. How are episode-ratings counted into the rating of a show? I mean, surely a show can have many votes, but if someone gives a rating for a specific episode, this should also have some influence on the overall rating. Of course there is the problem that some episodes don't get as many votes as others and that peolpe tend to give a positive rating for an episode they liked but not give a negative rating for an episode they disliked. I have no idea how to solve this dilemma right now :-/
2. The same as in the Top250 Movies, there should be a formula at the bottom of the list, explaining how the overall rating was calculated.
3. It would be nice if the rating in the list would show more than one digit after the decimal mark to see how close a movie/show is ahead of another. Of course this should be done also for the Top250 Movies.

5000 seems like a good minimum votes number for now. Hopefully this list will encourage more people to vote on TV shows. If a show isn't popular in the US/UK it basically has no chance making 5000 votes as it is, let alone upping it to 25,000 (for instance El Chavo Del 8, a giant of the Hispanic world only has ~3600 votes). An exception is Leyla ile Mecnun which has clearly been vote stuffed, which your algorithm seems to have picked up on given how low it is on the list compared to its rating.

... Hopefully this list will encourage more people to vote on TV shows. If a show isn't popular in the US/UK it basically has no chance making 5000 votes as it is ....Another point: Some great old shows that were justifiably popular long ago are never gonna get their fair share of votes on IMDb. I mentioned a once-famous, excellent, groundbreaking and influential US show from the early '60s that hasn't had a DVD release and is largely neglected now. It has how many votes on IMDb? 232. That is pathetic.
Obviously, voting is not an optimal way to measure relative quality.
(How should quality be measured? That is an interesting question.)
I've said before that "no rational person" should care about IMDb user ratings. With that attitude, I probably shouldn't even be posting here. I'm not a friend.

@Yann: Thank you for the reference to the article. The basic technique used by the authors of the article has been used to determine the importance of academic research. It is also very similar to the Page Rank methodology that Google uses for search results. The results summarized in the article sound promising.

Thank you again for posting the link to the article:

I created an IMDb List based on:
Table S3. Films with most long-gap citations
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls079013464/?publish=save
The methodology discussed in the paper is very useful for films, since IMDb has a significant amount of documented connections between films. It would be interesting to determine whether there are sufficient number of connections between television programs for the methodology to work.
I plan to contact the authors of the paper regarding the applicability of their methodology to television programs.

Its a nice idea keeping in mind the high trend of TV shows among users, how will u base episode rating as many shows are not ended and their final overall ratings have not been given only episode wise is given as it should be

Big YAY for Firefly and giving credit to animated series here due.
Feedback: would be really helpful if you can add "Genre" under the title. Even better if it could be added in separate column.
It'll help in sorting and binge-watching in any particular genre you want to indulge in. You know, wrap up all the best fantasy series or sitcoms.

I have like 20 shows that I am either a big fan of or I just like. ALL OF THEM ARE ON THE LIST. What is the point of the list if everything is on it. Have like a top 50 or 100 list for TV.
And while you guys are at it, please increase the size of movie lists to 500. There are so many movies I love that have slipped down the list.

If anything, you should also create a third Top 250 list for documentaries alone (which includes both TV and feature)

Think of it this way: an 8.6 would still crack the top 30 on the top movies list. Because so many TV series are rated so highly, what may look like a lot of separation simply isn't the case. IMO, once you're reaching that tier of ratings, it's more important to recognize that distinction of "this is really, really good TV vs all the other TV out there" than to argue how it ranks among the various other top series.
As for historical significance, most people don't consider that when they rate something. By your rationale I should be rating a series or movie lower if it bankrupted a production company or studio. I'm not so sure that's appropriate. You can still recognize how something shaped the film/TV industry, popular culture, politics/history, or hell, even started or stopped a war without having that play a role in how much you liked it. You argue that legacy and influence should be more greatly integrated with entertainment value in one's rating, but I think there's still value in being able to divorce those two spheres. Case in point for me: I found The Birth of a Nation to be repulsive, but can still appreciate its huge influence on the beginning of the film industry. One final thing to remember: each of those influential series you mention also had their own antecedents that influenced them. It's all connected, and trying to parse all that apart can muddy the waters too much at times.
As for the 'newness=greatness' factor, I agree this is a bit of a problem. All I can say is that as time passes and their novelty wears off, those will tend to drop down to a more appropriate rating. We just have to accept that phenomenon, unless we do something drastic like putting a moratorium on being able to rate new releases until a certain amount of time (we're talking years) has passed. That would not be a popular policy.

FWIW, I have it rated right up there with the rest of the "greatest".
