Today we are happy to announce the release of the Top 250 TV (beta) list on IMDb! Similar to the Top 250 Movies list, the Top 250 TV (beta) list ranks TV shows as rated by regular users. Check out the list, vote on your favorites, and let us know what you think of the release. The list can be seen here on your desktop: http://www.imdb.com/chart/toptv , and under the 'TV' menu on IMDb apps and mobile browsers.
Thanks, and we hope you enjoy the new list!

Unlike many others, I don't believe the vote requirement should be as high as it is for movies, but I think 15000 should do just fine. 5000 is waaaay too low a bar.

Advanced search still has only Top 250 movies option, nothing for Top 250 TV yet. Get on it, guys! Personally, I think Advanced Search is one of IMDb's best features. Not enough people use it.

Documentaries need to be excluded from the list just like for the Top 250 Movies list.

What I think should also be excluded are Talk-Shows and Internet Web Shows. At the moment web shows like Nostalgia Critic and the Angry Video Game Nerd are listed as TV Shows even though they are not TV Shows at all and shouldn't count.

I agree about the documentaries, I'm not sure about talk-shows, but I definitely think web-series should be included, as long as they're fictional, like, say, the Lizzie Bennett Diaries. That gives independent makers a chance. Also, Netflix shows like House of Cards and Daredevil are technically web shows too.

Hmm, ok, I see your point about Netflix exclusive TV shows. The reason I I want talk-shows to be excluded is because there's a lot of them that only American audiences would see and are redundant for international viewers anyway. I say the list should only consist of story driven shows.

The list is great, but Dragon Ball Z is on there twice. I also feel that 5000 votes seems a little small for a qualifier but I understand as people do not vote on TV shows as much compared to movies. Overall I am glad thatch list was finally made.

Unlike most anime, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z's English dubs are different from the originals, in terms of editing and all. I don't know if they should still be one entry or two, just thought you should know.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Lots of anime shows..
List consists of lots of anime shows. For instance there are 5 versions of Dragon Ball series. This led to exclusion of some good shows from the list. Personally I would like to see E.R. and Penny Dreadful in the list. So maybe it is possible to combine these anime shows in one title like "Dragon Ball series". By this way we can see other great shows in IMDB Top 250 TV.

Definitely agree with this, doesn't make much sense to have Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z twice on the list. If it's all because of how different the two versions are then maybe there needs to be some sort of two versions in one merge so you can see both the English and Japanese versions but on the same IMDB entry so there would be no need for repeated separate entries.

While you MAY have a point with 2 of the 5 (even though the two versions are quite different in tone, and the English version was sometimes edited and cut significantly), combining the other 3 is a bad idea. Would you combine all the Star Trek shows into a "Star Trek series"? If so, shouldn't this also extend to the movie side? Shouldn't there be a "Harry Potter series", a "Pirates of the Caribbean series", a "Batman series", and an "X-Men series"? (or hell, if we're going that far, why not just make a "Marvel series"?) It sure would clear up a lot of clutter on the popular movies lists. If you think such drastic measures are necessary, then be consistent about it. If you think the suggestions are ridiculous, then also have that same respect for titles which you dislike or don't care about.

That's not what I meant, say you could combine the two versions of Dragon Ball Z into one, you could choose which version of the show you want to look at all on the same IMDB entry page in a tab fashion so you could easily switch between them. Never did I say combine the whole series, just the different versions of the same show.

First of all, we are talking about IMDB Top 250 tv. Movies are not the issue here. We can discuss movies under another topic. Secondly, in my opinion, if the cast, characters and the main story line are the same, combination can be useful. For instance I think 24 and 24: Live Another Day can be merged into "24 series" because these two shows are basically the same. But we cannot say the same thing for Star Trek series. The whole cast, story and characters are different in Star Trek, Star Trek: Next Generation, Stark Trek: Enterprise and so on. They share only the same universe.
I must confess, I did not watch Dragon Ball series, but when I look at the IMDB pages of the shows, I see the same characters. But I trust you when you say only two of them are similar. So maybe editors merged these two shows into one.

I have noticed some titles in the list that really have nothing to do with tv. I realize that TV isn't exactly what it used to be in the sense of things "airing" as we now have a lot of new mediums like Netflix, hulu, amazon, etc. but a few titles that a have notced for instance The Angry Video Game Nerd and Nostalgia Critic are both just youtube channels. Just saying I don't really think that qualifies as a TV series or miniseries.

No one forgot nor remembered anything. The system simply lists the 250 most highly rated titles. While The Fall shows a score equal to the lowest on the list, it doesn't have a high enough rating by "regular users" to make the list. As votes are added over time, being so close might mean it at some point might be included.
But no one sat down and authored the feature. It just goes by the most recent vote totals. So there's no real benefit in discussing which should be there. Our peers think it should not (I had never heard of it so if I can find a way to see it, it'll get one more vote.....of course no telling if I qualify as "regular").
