IMDB restricts access to its comments section to individuals who can verify their identity using a Cellular Phone or Credit Card.

I have a disability that prevents me from working.  I live on a fixed income.  That income is not enough to pay for a cellular phone, nor is it a form of income which would allow me to obtain a regular line of credit, nor is it enough to justify the expense of paying for a pre-paid credit card.

IMDB can be classifed as a privately operated free service that is open to public use.

IMDB's policy necessarily discriminates against individuals based on their income level, essentially classifying anyone without an income level that justifies cellular service/a credit card as unworthy of using the comments section, or worse, as being a unsavory individual by default.

IMDB has chosen to enact a policy that necessarily discriminates against individuals with a low income.  My low income is a direct result of my disability.   Therefore IMDB is discriminating against me based on a socio-economic factor that is a direct result of my disability.

Physical/Mental disability is a protected characteristic under multiple acts of government in most developed nations.   You can no more discriminate against an individual with a disability based on a factor determined by their disability (for instance: income level) than you can discriminate against an individual who is an immigrant based on a factor determined by their immigration status (for instance: refusing to allow access to anyone unable to provide a domestic birth certificate).

It is absolutely offensive to enact any policy which necessarily discriminates against people based on socio-economic factors that otherwise have no bearing on the service provided.

I am posting this complaint here to give IMDB staff the ability to respond to it and discuss how to rectify the situation before it becomes necessary to bring it to the attention of civil and human rights organizations/commissions.

I'm not a member of staff but it is worth flagging up that you don't need to use your own mobile phone, all you need is a friend or family member who has one and doesn't mind getting a text sent to them - it costs them nothing and I don't believe there is anything in the text that needs it passing on to you, they just need it to be delivered (my phone was out of commission when I authenticated, so used a family member's).

I have the same issue.  There only two people in my house who use cellphone and one cellphone has texting and the other doesn't  and the one w/ texting cacipaties-we are basically like the early  Emma&Regina.  I also don't want to ask my friends either when they're all over the country
