I am pleased to announce the availability of a new boards update.

This newly-launched version of the boards features a number of visual and functional changes, including incorporation of our new avatars.

This change is (currently) only on the IMDb.com website -- mobile apps and the mobile-optimized version of the site (m.imdb.com) are not affected.

Although this change will be eventually be permanent, it is currently offered as an opt-in/opt-out for a brief period while we are testing it and evaluate performance and your feedback.

What's new from a visual standpoint:

  • Incorporation of avatars on all views and posts
  • Visual style has been updated to match the main site
  • Switch between view styles (nest, flat, etc) on client (fast!) rather than the server
  • Original poster is highlighted in posts
  • IMDb staff are highlighted in posts.
  • More information in the header of the post.

To improve performance we removed some little-used features:

  • Themes (user selectable color backgrounds)
  • Publicly facing "website" and "email" fields

To opt-in and test the new boards, please look for the announcement at the top of page in any of the boards and click on 'Try it Now' (see image below). During this testing phase you'll be able to return to the old board style if you click on 'Switch Back'.

By jingo, how unexpected!

It looks less nineties now, much cleaner.

I do wonder if it is necessary to highlight the thread starter but other than that it looks good.

I absolutely hate that you took away the Theme settings. I used Phosphor because I hate the eye strain that comes with reading black text on a white screen. Computer screens are not sheets of paper, and your new design is the equivalent of staring into a light bulb.

Why do you always break more things than you fix?

I agree, the design is much cleaner and easier to read.

To improve performance we removed some little-used features:
Themes (user selectable color backgrounds)

The design is fine, but removing the selectable colors ruins it for me. I never used the default theme because it is too bright and gives me headaches. Just like King Crab said, it's absolutely great that you want to improve the site, but improving means creating more functionalities for the users, not taking them away along with the personalization features. It seems that every time you give us one new thing, you take away two. And let’s be serious, how much can removing this feature improve on performance, really?
I’m hoping this time you’ll listen to the users. Just once.

Wow! Now I can report my own abuse and even ignore myself! I couldn't do either of those things in the old format.

I'm with SP. It's the functionality that needs to be improved more than the look.

Ability to subscribe to threads. Reply notification doesn't cut it.

A couple of quibbles.

The countdown clock for the post quota is gone. It tells you that "Posting quota is in place. You are limited from posting again for a short while.", but that short while is not specified.

Also, if you wish to edit a recently posted message, you cannot edit it until your post quota expires. This is a serious flaw.

They did the same thing back when they implemented the posting quota, but eventually removed it after numerous complaints. Why have they brought it back? It's still a bad idea.

When you are scrolling through your post history if you reach page 2 or 3 (or more), it only gives you the option of progressing to the next 'older' posts page. You cannot go back to the 'newer' posts. Another simple oversight, I'm sure.

To the right you will see an icon that reads 'Boards Profile'. You can click on that to open the traditional style profile page so that you can add a friend. Though, I agree, this option should be on the main profile page.

It seems you are correct in that there is no way that I can see that your friends list can be accessed in the new format nor can a new friend be added.

There's neither such a button in the new message boards on Boards Profile nor on the main profile page.

Yes, I was mistaken in that belief. It seems the option of a friends list has been removed. Whether this is intentional or not remains to be seen.

I like the initiative and structure of the new message board layouts, but there are far too many glitches and functionality issues for me to use it at the moment. I will be switching back now.

the new look message boards will take some getting used to

BUT YOU HAVE to seperate the signatures from peoples posts

have a line so it looks like an attached box or something

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
there defo needs to be a dotted line or something seperating the signature from the post.

Are you advocating a dynamic signature that can be edited en masse and not part of the post? If so, I'm for that. Otherwise, you can insert your own dotted line on top of the signature. I have.

I've encountered three bugs so far:
1. The current board system allows a user to enter Unicode characters. Unicode characters cannot be entered with the new board system. The characters get scrambled. Unicode characters entered with the current board system display properly in the new board system.
2. Links to Ignore User and Report Abuse are displayed and active for my posts.
3. The nested view, after a certain level of indenture, remain on the same level for all further posts, making it difficult to determine which posts is being referenced.

The original thread is

I believe the nested indents disappear at some point in the old format also, especially when someone posts something that won't wrap. I've actually had my reply show up left of the target post in that format. I use NEST almost all the time. An exception is when there are multiple pages. If the latest posts in the FLAT format are unintelligible, I conclude the thread has become unmanageable and drop it!

We're going to increase the maximum indent from 10 to 20 levels in a few days.

There's a downside to that also. Lazy posters may like a post, but not tell you why. I remember seeing a post on Facebook with over 50 likes, but no one bothered to reply!

I also use nest and noticed the flatlining as you pointed out. There are a number of problems with the new format. I am happy to see they are testing on the populace first before making it official.

The old space in the long link text bug is still there, so some obvious cosmetic failures have yet to be dealt with. It's one of the most insidious ongoing bugs on IMDb boards because it gets worse when you edit the post. Then the space is hiding at the end of a line within the link itself.

Get Satisfaction displays only a part of the link, but does not add a space. For example, the link for this thread does not get corrupted.

IMDb should implement the same functionality in the new design prior to making it an official release.

In addition the new design may may not handle long character strings properly.

How about enforcing your terms of service, and IP-banning any account that engages in impersonation, cyberstalking, or harassment. Instead of ignoring requests for help.

That would be a change for the better.

Also, how about requiring new members to wait 30 days before gaining the privilege of posting? That way booted abusers can't just make sock accounts immediately to continue abuse.

(And no, authentication doesn't work, because anyone can receeve an SMS TEXT message on a website for free, without a real cell phone number.)

yes I would definitely like IMDb to enforce this. This will help IMDb with cyber bullying and stalking and trolling tremendously. And it will make IMDb a fun enjoyable website like it once used to be. So please enforce this policy. yes please.

I like it a lot.

- Especially the Original Poster being highlighted.
- I also like the avatars.
- I think it's easier and more appealing to read the posts.
- I like when we edit our posts it just says so up above rather than the bulky text in the body of the post.

Small problem with the new message boards.

Issue with the new board design (which I like, overall). Editing a post made under the old design which contained an accent (ô), I found it all messed up in the edit under the new system (A'=, I think). Returning to the old format and re-editing brought it back as good as new.
Small issue but needs fixing before you go live..
