I am pleased to announce the availability of a new boards update.

This newly-launched version of the boards features a number of visual and functional changes, including incorporation of our new avatars.

This change is (currently) only on the IMDb.com website -- mobile apps and the mobile-optimized version of the site (m.imdb.com) are not affected.

Although this change will be eventually be permanent, it is currently offered as an opt-in/opt-out for a brief period while we are testing it and evaluate performance and your feedback.

What's new from a visual standpoint:

 • Incorporation of avatars on all views and posts
 • Visual style has been updated to match the main site
 • Switch between view styles (nest, flat, etc) on client (fast!) rather than the server
 • Original poster is highlighted in posts
 • IMDb staff are highlighted in posts.
 • More information in the header of the post.

To improve performance we removed some little-used features:

 • Themes (user selectable color backgrounds)
 • Publicly facing "website" and "email" fields

To opt-in and test the new boards, please look for the announcement at the top of page in any of the boards and click on 'Try it Now' (see image below). During this testing phase you'll be able to return to the old board style if you click on 'Switch Back'.

The only problem I have with the new boards is that I'm stuck with the grey on grey look. I used to use the Santa Fe theme (had done for years). Is there any chance that themes of some kind will be added to the new system? They were much easier on the eyes.

I supposed I can always grab something from userstyles and the like to change the look but still it was nicer having it all in house.

I've asked this question before on here but no one seems to want to help.

IMDb is not allowing me to upload a profile pic (it hasn't for weeks). I've been trying to upload a thumbnail but it constantly keeps going to this page "error 400".

Does anyone know whats going on?

This is a great conversation that's separate from the main topic, so I created a new topic to continue the discussion. Please reference the new topic here: Problems uploading a picture

Selectable color backgrounds has turned all backgrounds into a murky muddy mess. Black on brown. Hard to read and boring. How do we get white backgrounds back?

I'm assuming that the new board system has gone live. I now receive this message:
Woah... a glitch in The Matrix?
No, we just redesigned our message boards.

We still need access to the old system to fix things that don't work yet in the new. i.e. accent marks.

You broke the "IMDB Message Boards Plus" plugin and I see absolutely nothing that your "new look" brings to the game that makes up for that lack. Do you people even _look_ at what third parties are doing with your system before you make changes? Now if you wanted to do something _useful_ you would license that plugin and included it in your system, but instead all you seem to care about is making gray round cornered windows, a useless feature.

The boards have gone live now and the accents still don't work. Could you please fix this, it's very hard to try to discuss 'La Dr'Alesse' etc. Please remember that both cinema and your constituency are international!

Now the accents work on new posts, but the old posts have the same treatment as new ones had before--<?>. There is also a special character box that spews out randomly in your post, ignoring the cursor location.

The åÁâ box works better now, but still has bugs. The biggest one is that it won't work in the subject line at all.

Another bug is that the cursor is positioned at the end of the text box, rather than after the character inserted.

They must have worked on it today, because sometimes it actually inserts at the cursor. Not always, however. I hope they don't believe it's fixed!

The old space in the long link text bug has only been partially fixed. It's still there when you edit a post. Then you have to remove the hidden spaces at the line breaks by hand.

Worst of all Edit Preview is no longer WYSIWYG. The space is reintroduced to the link text in the preview and stripped out in the edited message. There should be no further processing of an edit after a preview.

I've since learned that the post preview is not always WYSIWYG. Does the programming team understand the meaning of "Preview?"

Put another way, I depend upon preview to reduce the likelihood that I will post something with an obvious error, such as a broken link. The usefulness of preview is substantially reduced if it is not always What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG).

It's been nearly a week and the problem seems to be getting worse because every fix they try breaks previous posts.

Another issue that should be addressed; changing board style from, let's say Thread to Nest, is now done on the client, which makes the transition fast. That's nice. However, if you hit refresh to check for a new post or something, the board falls back to the previous state, because the URL on the client doesn't change along with the fix. It will also fall back to the previous style when changing pages in a multi-page thread. Especially the latter is really annoying.

This should be fixed! It was actually a lot better having it the old way, than having to change to Nest every time I do a refresh (this applies to boards I enter through posted links from users with different preferences than my own - boards I enter manually still loads up with the style set in my preferences, fortunately).

New Bug: No link to Your Favorite Message Boards
The drop down menu under "Favorites & Links" does not display all of the favorite message boards and no longer includes a link to:
Your Favorite Message Boards

There is currently no way to navigate to this page in IMDb.

It looks like the IMDb Technical Staff has corrected the problem with the scroll bar being hidden. Also, having separate links to Favorites, Friends and Preferences is easier to use. Thanks.

Thank you DrakeStraw. "Nearly invisible" is right!
Dan Dassow, my vision is pretty good, and I couldn't see it. Relying on images alone for functionality is one of the first things they teach you not to do in a basic web design class. I'd like to rant about the stupid designers and programmers, but likely it was some suit that thought it looked "cleaner" without text.

And how dumb is it that you cannot comment here with an IMDb login???

Missing Feature
It is no longer possible to email a PM send to you to your email. This was a useful feature of the previous instantiation of the message board software, since PMs expire after 21 days.

HUGE ISSUE with IMDB APPLE iOS App (iPad & iPhone):

I cannot post new topics at all, and have trouble with many replies, if I'm using the IMDB **APP** on my iPad. Topics won't post - a Red Error Message pops up that says my topic cannot be posted due to "SERVER ERROR".

Other times, we will just keep pressing the yellow "Submit" button & nothing will happen. The submit button will 'non-highlight' for a moment, then "come back" - highlighted & clickable as it was in the beginning - and no post/topic. This will go on forever if you let it.

Anyway, these problems are new since the Message Board Redesign and having to use Safari......well, why have an App in the first place?

We would appreciate some help, answers & fixes. Thank you very much!

Small bug with new Button
The new "Add a Special Character" button is a nice idea. However, the cursor is positioned at the end of the post rather than after the special character that was inserted.

With the new button, does this also mean that Unicode characters are now supported on message boards?

I found it! A nearly invisible heart has to be clicked next to the board name. The heart is red if it's one of your favorites.

The nearly invisible heart would be difficult for someone who is visually impaired to see. At least when one hovers over it, there is alternate text so that audio readers can interpret the image correctly.

However, ... the old format for the list of threads shows up when selected from the main page.

For example:
1. Go to Man of Steel (2013) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/c...]
2. Click on Discuss this movie with other users on IMDb message board for Man of Steel (2013) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/b...]. The old list of threads format shows up.
3. Click on a thread title [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/b...]. The thread is in the new format.
4. Click on Man of Steel (2013) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/b...] The list of threads is in the new format.

This is also a problem from people pages, such as Henry Cavill
Discuss Henry Cavill on the IMDb message boards ». [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0147147/bo...]

The difference is that the main page links to:
http:// www.imdb.com /title/tt0770828/board

... and the board links to
http:// www.imdb.com /title/tt0770828/board/threads/

At least until this bug is fix, there is still a way to add a board to my favorites. [smile]

I recommend implementing add a board to my favorites functionality to the new board system, before you fix this bug. At least there is a work around.

The mounted markup icons above your post is a nice touch, but some of them don't work.

When you wish to place emphasis on a particular word by 'bolding' it or 'italics', and you use the icons to implement this, it doesn't work.

Please can you make a line between the main post and the poster's signature?

It's so annoying having to work out if the sig is a sig, or part of the damn message!

thanks

PS: like this:

this is a signature and is therefore something really witty

It occurs to me that the best approach might be IMDB running a process to add a line to everyone's signature file. Then if anyone wants to edit it and add in a different one they can.

Or just make the sig a different colour box.

I'm for anything that leads to dynamic signatures. My signature is now obsolete because of the toolbox we can use while posting.

Preview is really messed up for messages with diacritics, confirming that it really isn't a Preview. Each time you preview, the corruption increases.

Here is an example of what DrakeStraw is referencing:
http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000088/n...

I inserted all of the Unicode characters available using the tool. The characters look fine in the edit box but the preview is completely messed up.

The characters look fine when the message is finally posted:

I've also noticed that if you edit an existing post to correct the problem with the rendering of the Unicode characters, that the Unicode characters are frequently correct in the edit box, but render improperly in both the preview and final view.

These programmers really don't understand PREVIEW. The text should never be altered by the output of the HTML preview, yet we get compounded corruption just by previewing multiple times.

The best option in reference to signatures is to have an option of "hiding signatures" so we don't have to see or read other people's signatures....most sigs are not really worth reading anyways..

Thank you guys for fixing the text problem in the posts, but I have noticed another bug. The reviews underneath my message board profile are now without line breaks, making them appear as one long paragraph. This was not case either until recently. The reviews are fine however when you go directly to them on the movie pages.

you know we have "recently rated" on our profile

is there a way we can make just those 5 "recently rated public

without our entire rating history public

i'd much prefer that

thanks

I've got a new problem. After typing a message in a message box, I'm used to hitting the Tab key on the keyboard twice to go to the Post Reply button (the first Tab takes you to the Preview button) and hit space to post. This was still working right after the new boards system was in place, although the buttons didn't highlight properly. But now it doesn't work at all. Hitting tab out of the message box doesn't highlight anything anymore, and nothing happens if I hit space after two tabs now.

This must be fixed!

Formatting of message "headers"

This may be a long shot, but is there a way to code subject/poster/date data for a post in a way that makes it friendlier to copy/paste? I often copy my own posts to keep a record of them, along with their surrounding context, if they are ones important enough to me to want to see again. The old Message Board format wasn't ideal for this, but it was better than the new format. Here are examples (from a thread I used as an example in another post):

new format:
Other Continuity Goofs

by
caprika12
» Sun Jun 2 2013 10:21 Ignore User | Report Abuse | Reply
IMDb member since April 2011
When Amsterdam comes back and recognizes McGloin for the first time

old format:
Other Continuity Goofs
by caprika12 (Sun Jun 2 2013 10:21:49)
Ignore this User | Report Abuse Reply
When Amsterdam comes back and recognizes McGloin

My thought is that the old format is much easier to clean up than the old one, which basically needs only to have the "Ignore this User | Report Abuse Reply" line removed.

I probably wouldn't bother retaining my messages if I didn't find older messages disappearing over time.
