I am pleased to announce the availability of a new boards update.
This newly-launched version of the boards features a number of visual and functional changes, including incorporation of our new avatars.
This change is (currently) only on the IMDb.com website -- mobile apps and the mobile-optimized version of the site (m.imdb.com) are not affected.
Although this change will be eventually be permanent, it is currently offered as an opt-in/opt-out for a brief period while we are testing it and evaluate performance and your feedback.
What's new from a visual standpoint:

To opt-in and test the new boards, please look for the announcement at the top of page in any of the boards and click on 'Try it Now' (see image below). During this testing phase you'll be able to return to the old board style if you click on 'Switch Back'.

I've asked this question before on here but no one seems to want to help.
IMDb is not allowing me to upload a profile pic (it hasn't for weeks). I've been trying to upload a thumbnail but it constantly keeps going to this page "error 400".
Does anyone know whats going on?

Selectable color backgrounds has turned all backgrounds into a murky muddy mess. Black on brown. Hard to read and boring. How do we get white backgrounds back?

I'm assuming that the new board system has gone live. I now receive this message:

We still need access to the old system to fix things that don't work yet in the new. i.e. accent marks.
The boards have gone live now and the accents still don't work. Could you please fix this, it's very hard to try to discuss 'La Dr'Alesse' etc. Please remember that both cinema and your constituency are international!
Definitely they went live with an inferior product.
Now the accents work on new posts, but the old posts have the same treatment as new ones had before--<?>. There is also a special character box that spews out randomly in your post, ignoring the cursor location.
The รฅรรข box works better now, but still has bugs. The biggest one is that it won't work in the subject line at all.

Another bug is that the cursor is positioned at the end of the text box, rather than after the character inserted.
They must have worked on it today, because sometimes it actually inserts at the cursor. Not always, however. I hope they don't believe it's fixed!
The old space in the long link text bug has only been partially fixed. It's still there when you edit a post. Then you have to remove the hidden spaces at the line breaks by hand.
Worst of all Edit Preview is no longer WYSIWYG. The space is reintroduced to the link text in the preview and stripped out in the edited message. There should be no further processing of an edit after a preview.

I've since learned that the post preview is not always WYSIWYG. Does the programming team understand the meaning of "Preview?"

Put another way, I depend upon preview to reduce the likelihood that I will post something with an obvious error, such as a broken link. The usefulness of preview is substantially reduced if it is not always What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG).
So, you've actually gone live with it without fixing the Unicode problem first? What's wrong with you???
It's been nearly a week and the problem seems to be getting worse because every fix they try breaks previous posts.

Looks like I did not see the scroll bar when I reported this problem, or problem corrected itself, or the technical staff corrected the problem since.

I see what is happening. Depending upon the screen dimensions, the scroll bar may be off the screen and cannot be used. As a result, the list appears to be truncated. The "Favorites & Links" scroll menu needs to be shifted to the left when it appears so that the scroll bar appears on the screen.

Although the scroll bar is hidden, one can use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through the menu.
Okay, so I found out how it works in the new version. I liked the link in the old version better. This new one is one step more and, honestly, I don't need any hearts....

It looks like the IMDb Technical Staff has corrected the problem with the scroll bar being hidden. Also, having separate links to Favorites, Friends and Preferences is easier to use. Thanks.

Dan Dassow, my vision is pretty good, and I couldn't see it. Relying on images alone for functionality is one of the first things they teach you not to do in a basic web design class. I'd like to rant about the stupid designers and programmers, but likely it was some suit that thought it looked "cleaner" without text.
And how dumb is it that you cannot comment here with an IMDb login???

Small bug with new Button
The new "Add a Special Character" button is a nice idea. However, the cursor is positioned at the end of the post rather than after the special character that was inserted.
With the new button, does this also mean that Unicode characters are now supported on message boards?

They're supported in new posts and edits, but now they've broken the existing posts. Post titles listed in the profile are now messed up.
How do I add a board to my favorites in the new format? That option seems to have disappeared.

I found it! A nearly invisible heart has to be clicked next to the board name. The heart is red if it's one of your favorites.

The nearly invisible heart would be difficult for someone who is visually impaired to see. At least when one hovers over it, there is alternate text so that audio readers can interpret the image correctly.

The mounted markup icons above your post is a nice touch, but some of them don't work.
When you wish to place emphasis on a particular word by [b]'bolding'[/b] it or [i]'italics'[/i], and you use the icons to implement this, it doesn't work.

It's so annoying having to work out if the sig is a sig, or part of the damn message!

It occurs to me that the best approach might be IMDB running a process to add a line to everyone's signature file. Then if anyone wants to edit it and add in a different one they can.
Or just make the sig a different colour box.

I'm for anything that leads to dynamic signatures. My signature is now obsolete because of the toolbox we can use while posting.

It looks like advice, but it served more as a personal tool box.
Preview is really messed up for messages with diacritics, confirming that it really isn't a Preview. Each time you preview, the corruption increases.

I inserted all of the Unicode characters available using the tool. The characters look fine in the edit box but the preview is completely messed up.

I've also noticed that if you edit an existing post to correct the problem with the rendering of the Unicode characters, that the Unicode characters are frequently correct in the edit box, but render improperly in both the preview and final view.

These programmers really don't understand PREVIEW. The text should never be altered by the output of the HTML preview, yet we get compounded corruption just by previewing multiple times.
I've got a new problem. After typing a message in a message box, I'm used to hitting the Tab key on the keyboard twice to go to the Post Reply button (the first Tab takes you to the Preview button) and hit space to post. This was still working right after the new boards system was in place, although the buttons didn't highlight properly. But now it doesn't work at all. Hitting tab out of the message box doesn't highlight anything anymore, and nothing happens if I hit space after two tabs now.
This must be fixed!

I agree. The current force of programmers seem to be clueless about proper control of the cursor.
