This newly-launched version of the boards features a number of visual and functional changes, including incorporation of our new avatars.
This change is (currently) only on the IMDb.com website -- mobile apps and the mobile-optimized version of the site (m.imdb.com) are not affected.
Although this change will be eventually be permanent, it is currently offered as an opt-in/opt-out for a brief period while we are testing it and evaluate performance and your feedback.
What's new from a visual standpoint:
- Incorporation of avatars on all views and posts
- Visual style has been updated to match the main site
- Switch between view styles (nest, flat, etc) on client (fast!) rather than the server
- Original poster is highlighted in posts
- IMDb staff are highlighted in posts.
- More information in the header of the post.
To improve performance we removed some little-used features:
- Themes (user selectable color backgrounds)
- Publicly facing "website" and "email" fields
To opt-in and test the new boards, please look for the announcement at the top of page in any of the boards and click on 'Try it Now' (see image below). During this testing phase you'll be able to return to the old board style if you click on 'Switch Back'.

I supposed I can always grab something from userstyles and the like to change the look but still it was nicer having it all in house.

IMDb is not allowing me to upload a profile pic (it hasn't for weeks). I've been trying to upload a thumbnail but it constantly keeps going to this page "error 400".
Does anyone know whats going on?

Worst of all Edit Preview is no longer WYSIWYG. The space is reintroduced to the link text in the preview and stripped out in the edited message. There should be no further processing of an edit after a preview.

This should be fixed! It was actually a lot better having it the old way, than having to change to Nest every time I do a refresh (this applies to boards I enter through posted links from users with different preferences than my own - boards I enter manually still loads up with the style set in my preferences, fortunately).

The drop down menu under "Favorites & Links" does not display all of the favorite message boards and no longer includes a link to:
Your Favorite Message Boards
http://www.imdb.com/user/ur0127678/bo...
There is currently no way to navigate to this page in IMDb.

Dan Dassow, my vision is pretty good, and I couldn't see it. Relying on images alone for functionality is one of the first things they teach you not to do in a basic web design class. I'd like to rant about the stupid designers and programmers, but likely it was some suit that thought it looked "cleaner" without text.
And how dumb is it that you cannot comment here with an IMDb login???

It is no longer possible to email a PM send to you to your email. This was a useful feature of the previous instantiation of the message board software, since PMs expire after 21 days.

I cannot post new topics at all, and have trouble with many replies, if I'm using the IMDB **APP** on my iPad. Topics won't post - a Red Error Message pops up that says my topic cannot be posted due to "SERVER ERROR".
Other times, we will just keep pressing the yellow "Submit" button & nothing will happen. The submit button will 'non-highlight' for a moment, then "come back" - highlighted & clickable as it was in the beginning - and no post/topic. This will go on forever if you let it.
Anyway, these problems are new since the Message Board Redesign and having to use Safari......well, why have an App in the first place?
We would appreciate some help, answers & fixes. Thank you very much!

The new "Add a Special Character" button is a nice idea. However, the cursor is positioned at the end of the post rather than after the special character that was inserted.
With the new button, does this also mean that Unicode characters are now supported on message boards?

For example:
1. Go to Man of Steel (2013) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/c...]
2. Click on Discuss this movie with other users on IMDb message board for Man of Steel (2013) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/b...]. The old list of threads format shows up.
3. Click on a thread title [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/b...]. The thread is in the new format.
4. Click on Man of Steel (2013) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/b...] The list of threads is in the new format.
This is also a problem from people pages, such as Henry Cavill
Discuss Henry Cavill on the IMDb message boards ยป. [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0147147/bo...]
The difference is that the main page links to:
http:// www.imdb.com /title/tt0770828/board
... and the board links to
http:// www.imdb.com /title/tt0770828/board/threads/
At least until this bug is fix, there is still a way to add a board to my favorites. [smile]
I recommend implementing add a board to my favorites functionality to the new board system, before you fix this bug. At least there is a work around.

When you wish to place emphasis on a particular word by 'bolding' it or 'italics', and you use the icons to implement this, it doesn't work.

It's so annoying having to work out if the sig is a sig, or part of the damn message!
thanks

Or just make the sig a different colour box.

I inserted all of the Unicode characters available using the tool. The characters look fine in the edit box but the preview is completely messed up.
The characters look fine when the message is finally posted:
I've also noticed that if you edit an existing post to correct the problem with the rendering of the Unicode characters, that the Unicode characters are frequently correct in the edit box, but render improperly in both the preview and final view.

This may be a long shot, but is there a way to code subject/poster/date data for a post in a way that makes it friendlier to copy/paste? I often copy my own posts to keep a record of them, along with their surrounding context, if they are ones important enough to me to want to see again. The old Message Board format wasn't ideal for this, but it was better than the new format. Here are examples (from a thread I used as an example in another post):
new format:
Other Continuity Goofs

When Amsterdam comes back and recognizes McGloin for the first time
old format:

Ignore this User | Report Abuse Reply
When Amsterdam comes back and recognizes McGloin
My thought is that the old format is much easier to clean up than the old one, which basically needs only to have the "Ignore this User | Report Abuse Reply" line removed.
I probably wouldn't bother retaining my messages if I didn't find older messages disappearing over time.
