Elementary S05E07 Bang Bang Shoot Chute Trivia
The item states; " Mrs. Nearly, the victim's wife, tells police that Arturo died when he collided with another jumper. She states that Arturo "was knocked-out and never deployed his chute". Free fall parachutes have a automatic deployment system connected to an altimeter to prevent just this type of accident. At a preset altitude, the parachute automatically deploys without needing any interaction from an unconscious or incapacitated jumper. This is standard equipment since there are multiple scenarios that could lead to a jumper being incapable of deploying their parachute. Each parachute model has a minimum altitude for safe deployment and the system is set at or above this minimum altitude."
This is not true. The United States Parachute Association (USPA), the only organization within the US (where the action takes place), only has rules for students regarding AADs. Automatic Activation Devices (AAD) are shown here https://uspa.org/SIM/2-1 Any USPA licensed member (non student) would not be required to use an AAD.
Sport jumping is self regulated in the US. There is no requirement to belong to the USPA or follow their rules unless you use their drop zones.
The jumpers in the episode were experienced jumpers. Obviously they would not be required to use AADs as the Trivia implied.
