What about an Internet Book Database where you can rate books and sort on language?

There are quite a few with a range of features:

http://openlibrary.org - the one I've been signed up to and have contributed information to it
http://www.iblist.com
http://www.worldcat.org
http://isbndb.com
http://reader2.com
http://www.fictiondb.com

There was some discussion about this back in the day:

http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/Intern...

Even back then people were saying that Amazon might be it, as they have a huge catalogue of ISBNs and books, so it might be possible for them to export their data and that could form the core of a book database, perhaps based on IMDB. Of course, perhaps it could be done within IMDB, as there are a lot of authors listed it could easily hook into the films and work well alongside it:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0522454/

However, I think the topic is so massive that it'd need its own site and I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon are eying up one of the book database sites (and one of the comics ones?) which would create a family of media databases that could then all be hooked into each other - a film based on HP Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu could not only have links to Amazon and LoveFilm but also to the book database, which in turn would link to...

Thank you very much for your big help and answer.

I think that if you have the right help, the start of a new imdb like booksite can be a big source of income ;)

And i just want a site where i can type in a title and see rates, reviews and a book top 100 etc.

There is already an Internet Book Database. Unfortunately, it is currently down for maintenance.

It would be interesting to have a book database like the one you describe. However, it would be a lot of work to put something like that together. In addition, there are multiple book databases on the Internet, such as Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the WorldCat. In addition to allowing ratings, WorldCat will give you the closest copy of the book available in a library.

Amazon and Barnes and Noble allow people to rate books. For instance, here are ratings for "The Great Gatsby".

Did you mean this site:

http://www.ibookdb.net

I so, it is long dead:

http://www.parchayi.net/blog/
https://twitter.com/ibookdb/

It might be Amazon could pick up the URL cheap, export the book data from Amazon into a system based on IMDB's (although perhaps superficially, as I'd imagine there is a lot you'd change if starting from scratch).

Yes, I meant: http://www.ibookdb.net

It would be interesting if Amazon were to do as you suggest. However, it may be difficult to develop a viable business case for such a venture.

Hi Dan,

In Holland we have Bol.com, a very lare online bookshop.

I think that if they really invest in a site like we spoke of, with the posibility to click on a book and buy it by Bol.com we have a happy marketing plan, a happy costumer and a happy book lover.

I just send them an email, so if I become very rich of this idea I'll let you know ;P

Later!

All of the above said, a book database wouldn't need to be as complex as IMDB, as it is mainly author, title, ISBN, publisher, year, etc. with an option to add multiple people to it.

What might be more critical is a community, so you could look there instead:

http://www.goodreads.com - massive community and is free, but has a lot of links to other book sellers and cutting that down might raise a few eyebrows.

http://www.librarything.com - already draws its data from Amazon (and seems to mainly link to them and free sources) and has a paid for model. It also seems to have the most books indexed. This is 40% owned by AbeBooks, who are now owned by Amazon.

http://www.anobii.com - my main book account is here, partly because it easy to add books and the other sites allow importing from it. So I think I have duplicated that account on... presumably Goodreads (I'd rapidly hose through the free options at LibraryThing) but I've not updated either recently and am now well behind on indexing my books. Anyway this site has been sold off for £1 recently, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone could pick it up quite easily.

http://www.shelfari.com - this is owned by... Amazon. Now I think about it, I might have an account here. I'd need to check.

So they already have their nearly one and a half book databases (and I'd imagine there might be some further buyouts and mergers over the years), what they really need to do is work on integrating all the sites and driving traffic between them.

I made a suggestion about link to Shelfari and/or LibraryThing:
