INTRODUCING: New navigation on the IMDb website!

  • Updated 5 months ago
We're excited to announce that on November 22, 2019, IMDb launched a new navigation experience across the mobile and desktop website. These changes provide an improved navigation experience to help you find something new to watch every day.

Select "Menu" to find the parts of the site you know and love, like top-rated movies, celebrity news, and IMDb Originals. There is also easy access to IMDb TV (where available), your Watchlist, your Activity page and account settings.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled The redesign is a disaster. Can I go back to the previous version?.

New search bar placement is completely annoying, search for popular films comes up wrong, the entire interface makes no sense. If it ain’t broke...

Hello everyone —

My name is Sarah; I work at IMDb. Thanks for all the conversation (both positive and critical!) on the new navigation. We're reading all of it, and especially appreciate knowing how it doesn't work for you.

We've made two changes today to address some of your feedback:
  1. The background color of the search bar is white again. This should make it easier to see.
  2. The search bar and account menu are now visible at smaller screen widths -- we expect this will be particularly useful for contributors, poll-writers, and list-makers who are often in "dual-screen" mode.

We'll continue to monitor this thread — stay tuned for more changes coming soon.

Just EXCELLENT to read your thoughtful response and how IMDB addressed these issues! Awesome! Funny, I discovered the "white" bar just in the midst of writing my update. I was double checking myself and that white bar smacked me right in the face! I was actually ok with widening the page--but this is even better!

I was looking for alternatives to IMDB because I just found searching too difficult - my search was at the top of the page but very very dark and the bar was impossible to see - and then, today, I opened the site and it was almost back to normal!!  Hoorah and thank you.

Will you ever bring the old design back as an option? This is really making the site almost unusable. Especially the home page looks atrocious. It's just a bunch of random pictures and large-font words containing almost no information above the fold.

Middle button click (open in new tab) not works on search section in new design: I search a lot of movies. In previous design, in search box, I could wrote a name of movie and with middle button mouse click (scroller click) open the results in new tab. In new design this function is not working anymore and it is extremely annoying.

I am not having trouble navigating, but none if the videos will play. I just get a page with a black box where the video should be. It shows the titles and the posters and links back to the main page but no video. I hope you fix this great improvement soon.....maybe go back tot he way that worked., make everyone happy.

I really (viscerally) hate this new default full-screen video player you've just switched to using.  (I'm finding it so frustrating, I'm sadly, reluctantly beginning to search for a different site to look up titles and names.)  Please, is there any way I can go back to the viewer with the smaller image and the side panel of additional videos to see?

Hi Sarah,
I don't like the changes, there may be more, but right off the bat:
I like keyboard shortcuts, when I search and the possible selections come up I like to arrow down with my pinky, to the one I want and then press Enter; but, sadly this opens a new page, do I need to say a, "Worthless" new page, 'cause it is.  I have to left click on the selection to just go to that selection in the same page.  Then when I click on the preview it opens a new page, why?  Then I have to go back.  I like the old way where the preview opens in the same page and when done viewing, I just click the, "X" to close the preview and I'm ready for whatever I want next... lotta work for no reason.

Surprisingly IMDB, an Amazon company does a poor job of covering Prime (or other Amazon) video.  I'll look forward to when you bring that up to speed with the Netflix style.

You might be thinking everybody will get used to all these changes, cause there's a lot of negative responsee, and hey, IMDB is IMDB after all, but...

Correction: I go back and forth looking on IMDB for referred movies from elsewhere that I got confused when I said IMDB doesn't cover Prime Videos well.  I will retract that; BUT, I want to clarify that on some occasions where I was saying, "New page", I meant to say, "New tab", like when I arrow down from search to the movie and press Enter.   I would also like to add that the preview window doesn't fit my 16 x 9 screen (doesn't scale automatically) and thus I have to scroll down to unmute the sound... now why is the sound muted, after all I clicked to look at the preview?!

Never understand how making desktop sites more like mobile is supposed to be a good thing. Hiding things behind a menu button that then opens up full screen is pretty terrible design for desktop.

This "update" is horrendous. On a computer it looks like it was made in 1995 on Tripod or Angelfire by a 10 year old. If the look they were going for was "Completely unprofessional," well... NAILED IT!

I suggest to everyone who still cares about IMDB (it's creators obviously don't), to bookmark a random page from the site that still looks normal (such as the news page for example) and navigate from there, and that way you bypass the monstrosity which is the new home page. Or you can stick with it if you want epilepsy-inducing, flashing huge thumbnails to be your everyday experience. IMDB is apparently trying to be Netflix, but is there no mission statement for IMDB? It is a DATABASE for movies, not another streaming service or celebrity gossip website.

Among the things that disappeared from the new home page are the box office numbers and the news segment. Now if you want these segments and you start on the home page you need to navigate to them specifically to view them. These informational segments have been replaced by the likes of FAN FAVORITES because we all know that FAN FAVORITES  is an essential part of any movie database.

Dear imdb-Team,

please consider the following feedback:

1) On mobile devices (e.g. iPad) you have to go to the bottom to hit the search icon and then you have to go to the top of the screen to actually type something into the search field. Regarding UX this is quite annoying....

2) On the new desktop design I'm missing the News segment with an overview of movie & celeb news. Is it just me that I don't see it? If it's gone, is there any way to bring it back?

Thank you!

I would love to see a sticky search bar. Now there is a lot to scroll. An dI must go back to the top to search for a title, a new etc. Would be very useful if the search bar would be sticky at the top, fixed position.

Yup, that's it. However there used to be an overview on the landing page with news from both categories.

I don't see it. I'm using Chrome.

I find this new navigation design to be awful. The old design seems to have been designed for us to find what we needed. This new design seems to be aimed at the masses with very short attention spans. Big and "Flashy". The new design makes it harder to get the news articles. You now have to go through news by category (TV, Movies, Celebrities, etc....), taking much longer. It used to be all together unless you selected a category to filter them.
There are many other reasons I dislike this new design, but I'll stop here.

Hi Joseph, I appreciate the feedback on News being harder to find in the navigation menu. We're working on this.

If you do have any other thoughts you'd like to share, we're listening!

Thanks.

The new format is for people with ADD only. I can't understand how IMDb thought this "new look" would be accepted by the masses! They should hire programmers older than eighteen or supply them with Adderall.

The only two features for which I checked the IMDB homepage have been buried and/or removed entirely.

To see what's "In theaters" now I have to scroll past: news I frankly never cared about, "what to watch" suggestions clearly tailored for someone else, "fan favourite" showing the six movies everyone knows about already, video news I also never watch, "What's streaming" (which could be vaguely useful if it wasn't heavily biased towards amazon).

The "coming soon" section is in an even worse spot. While on mobile is just below "in theaters" (so still past all that junk sections), on desktop it's been replaced by trailers. Which don't seem to list all that's actually coming soon.

All in all, the time I'll spend on the homepage will be surely reduced.
And since the size of every section of the homepage has been increased, there'll be almost zero chances that I may accidentally see an interesting news or video while I look for the showtimes, as there can only be one section on the screen at any time.

I would like to suggest to get rid of the slider at the top. This because research and statistics show that 89% of visitors click on the first image/topic of a slider. Sliders used to be popular in the past, but not anymore in nowadays website UX design. If you Google on this topic, you will see lots of links to info to underline my statement.

Why single out the top row?

Yes, you are right, not only the top one. I focused on the top one, because that is that one I see the first. Like many others will. Where on the majority of websites, the top section/hero unit on the homepage is the most important section. And determines whether or not a visitor stays or leave. Although lots of IMDB visitors are returning visitors and not first time visitors, so they already know where to find what. And don't leave the site immediately.

This new web browser for IMDB is terrible. With the old version everything was all neat and organized and I could easily access anything form the main page, but now it's all a jumbled mess and all i can find is what new trailers there are and whats popular. I can't even find the tab for what movies are coming out each week. IMDB if you're reading this please give us, people who have an account, the choice to choose between using the old web browser and the new web browser like some other websites have done. thank you

Have you tried the Menu button (atop every IMDb page, including the home page):

Beware that the X to close that screen is now black, so barely visible. It's near the upper right corner.

The menu button only even appears if the browser window is wide enough or zoom settings scaled smaller. That is a problem.

Today the X to close the Menu screen is Black on the already Black background. Only found it because I knew it should be there. Please change it to a non-dark color, or reverse the background to light, with black letters for the menu items.

I'm using Chrome 79 on Windows 10.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Problem with site menu at the top of the page.

Bear with me.
This is going to be tough to wrap your head around.

The menu option on the main page works as designed.
Open it in any zoom, and you can scroll to see the bottom of that page if hidden because of the zoom setting.

But use the same menu option on any other page and it will not scroll. It is frozen. If you change zoom then scroll functions. Even if you go back to the existing zoom setting where you started at.
To see it fully without having to constantly adjusting zoom you must be around the 67% area.
See the pic at 90%

Note:
Only in this screenshot is the page below the cutoff visible.
You cannot scroll to the bottom of the menu or to the rest of the page showing.
Using Windows 10 Professional and the latest version of Firefox on a PC

Hi Ed —

Thanks for submitting this; I agree it looks like a bug.

We recently updated the menu behavior so that it can scroll when the entire menu doesn't fit on the screen. I'm therefore unable to reproduce the bug you're reporting.

Can you please check again and let us know if this is still an issue?

Thanks very much!

Hey, Trojan: Put one over your head and keep quiet. This is America and as far as I know, it's still a place where you can speak your mind (at least for now; it might change shortly thanks to people like you). Want to know why i constantly moan about things? Because I can! The only reason I don't cancel my IMDb account is because one day I hope they realize the mistake they made and revert back to their old ways. Until then, cram it! And I mean that in the most loving way. I must have hit a nerve in you, since it is your first post. Which means you are a lurker. And to answer your question: Get Satisfaction notifies me by email whenever a new reply is posted. I only reply to the ones that are important to me. That is, except for yours, which is troll behavior.

My regards to the Netherlands! I did not mean to imply that America is the only place to speak your mind. Everyone everywhere should without a troll attacking you for doing so.
