INTRODUCING: Updated IMDb.com homepage experience

  • 9
  • Announcement
  • Updated 15 hours ago

The new homepage is designed to help IMDb customers find what to watch right now, tonight, or this weekend — and where to find the best movies and TV shows for them, whether in theaters, on TV, or across a variety of streaming services (including IMDb TV, Prime Video, HBO, Starz, Showtime, Acorn TV, and PBS). Customers will benefit from a new recommendation engine that leverages implicit and explicit behavior to offer relevant and timely suggestions.

IMDb was never about being a high-tech movie phone service. It was about information. And you've ruined that and have now lost my daily clicks and visits because you've lost sight of your mission statement.

Agreed, the new change is awful, it takes forever to load and I know I will never get used to it.  Every time you guys make a major change like this, it's always for the worse.  Now you look like boxofficemojo, and that's not a good thing.

The new look sucks.

At least give us the option to retain the original layout, which was practical, functional and well thought out.

Not everyone wants the brain-dead swiping layout for a website.

Indeed, the new layout is APITA. Looks cheap and cheesy like anyother boring nerdish site. You've lost your uniqueness. This "new" look is sooooo common.

What happened to the IMDB home page that I liked. It was very informative. This new page looks like a wall of movie posters at a theater. Where are the upcoming movie & TV trailers & documentary s that I loved.  I liked the articles about who might be signing on to be in an upcoming movie, what movies are in the beginning stages of possible production soon or ideas that are in production now, where are the movie posters & pictures sections. Where are the polls & the top movie or TV shows that we use to vote on & then see the list. Where are the articles about the stars who are popular now. Where is the old information page that I always checked on everyday? This new layout sucks. Who cares what your people are recommending that I watch. They're not what I want to watch.

Complete stupid waste of the site. No need to log in anymore, it's just AMAZON trying to sell you something.
Throwing an ad every third picture already meant we'll no longer use the picture gallery. (Really? How much MORE revenue does that stupid 3rd picture ad make for IMDB? Does it make up for the people who STOPPED using it?)

I completely agree with this. I have no idea what I'm looking at now when browsing the new IMDB website? Is it just a show site for new movie posters? It's terrible. Where is the information, the text?
Just disable it and revert back to the old one. There was nothing wrong with it...

The home page is a nightmare, the cast list have the tiniest possible thumb nails for the pictures, the discussion... well I never really used that.

None of the features that bring people to IMDB are here.  What was the thinking here?  Let's see how much we can annoy our user base?

Everyone do this:

"I decided to quit complaining here and take it to Amazon directly because all IMDb is interested in is fixing bugs, not rolling back the homepage. I would advise everyone head over to Amazon and threaten to quit Prime if they don't revert the home page back to its previous glory. Amazon does not want to lose "customers", which is what IMDb is now calling us. Pester Amazon customer service, even though they say they can't help you. Believe me, they can! There is strength in numbers, something that is lacking in these Get Satisfaction boards, mainly because 90% of IMDb users have no idea they exist. I mention it on the homepage of my website and I have gotten more emails in one day than there are responses on these boards, the majority of them telling me they will take it to Amazon."

Ah, the good ol' days of 2 months ago...

Seriously, IMDB, why can't you just give us previously uber-loyal imdb-ers the option of using the old format?  I sooo miss the 'Opening This Week', 'Coming Soon', 'Top News', etc lists - all right there within *easy reach*!!!  IMDB *was* a multi-daily routine for me - now, out of habit, I still go there, but then say to myself begrudgingly "oh that's right, they f'd it up".  So seriously Col, give us *our* website back.  Please!!!!!

yeah.  i don't mind things being redesigned or updated but you've completely lost the core of your whole business.  It's no longer the worlds best source of movie and TV information.  It's a glorified TV week guide for subscription tv.  There's a f#$%ing million of them and 1 IMDb.  Get your shit together and get back to your core business.

Dion,
Based on what you say in your original post:
So i am really not loving the new page layout.  Looking up videos and news is particularly painful if its not in the very top 4-5 stories.  I thought the whole point of IMDb is that it is a database of movies and entertainment and the people who work in them, and somewhere you can get updates and news about this stuff.  I mean it's in the title.  This new format feels like its designed for people with the attention span of a goldfish or its just become an online Netflix/Amazon guide.  I used to use IMDb every day but i think i'll stop if its going to stay like this.
I don't understand why your objection sweeps the entire IMDb site into the dumpster. The name and title pages have not changed that I noticed. The only thing I've seen change is the homepage. What is it about going directly to the Top News page that is less satisfactory than before?

Here's a Wayback Machine link to the homepage from before the update (Jan 12; Jan 19 has the big black page):

bderoes: As a website owner and developer, it is my experience that you don't drastically change your homepage without doing the same to the rest of your site. I, and many more people here are objecting because we feel that the rest of IMDb will follow suit with the homepage. I mean there is change and then there is CHANGE, which is what IMDb (or, rather, Amazon) did to the homepage. A lot of people judge a website by its homepage and what IMDb is doing is catering to the ADD crowd, which is exactly the kind of "customers" Amaz...errr IMDb wants. It's obvious to me and to a lot of other people. Like I said previously, if the site fails, Amazon will consider it a tax write-off, something "users" don't want to see happen. IMDb just didn't cut their own throats, they put the pistol to their head and pulled the trigger. Still, it's not to late to turn back. Listen, I'm not opposed to change, but the change IMDb gave us was way beyond acceptable to veteran users such as myself.

Why does an ad have to take up the top third of every page, including any page showing the credits of a film? Is Amazon that hard up for money are is it there to remind us that Amazon owns IMDb? Guess what? IMDb was never an online store. It use to be a valued site full of information, but now it seems to be going in the opposite direction, which is why I stopped using it. I refuse to make any page on the site a homepage on my browser, mainly due to the huge ads. who knows what kind of info it is gathering on us? Think I'm being paranoid? I'm not!

The new design is horrible.  Everything is way too big and you get less information on the  screen because all the things have oversized Thumbnails and Pictures. For example the recently viewed section at the bottom now only shows the last 6 items instead of the before 13 items. WTF IMDb I thought this was a Database Website. Another Website goes down the drain because of bad web design. What the hell is wrong with be designers theese days. new design is always make everything oversized and designed for tablet or phone use instead of Desktop PC use.

This is a giant step backwards in functionality. The new homepage will give epileptics fits! How the hell can anyone at IMDb consider this an "Improvement"? It's the Internet's biggest joke! But I bet teens love it! They watch movies on their phones and it's obvious you are catering to them and not veteran users, which you are basically tossing in the trash. The new homepage is bloated code that never stops loading, unlike the old homepage, which offered us one-click functionality and very fast load times. Admit defeat and roll back!

So, basically, you've destroyed the functionality of being an Internet Movie DataBase, cataloging information on every movie and TV show under the sun, in favor of recreating the TV Guide. In the 21st Century. One that looks like it was designed by howler monkeys. Which, I'm sure is not a coincidence, are native to the Amazon.

Even if you go with the with the above statement that the new design is so people can find what to watch next its a failure design. People can read Coming soon to Theaters shows only 3 movies at once because you use huge thumbnails instead of a list with titles that release soon like before.  If you must use thumbnails make them at least 400% smaller. The whole design can be summed up as less user friendly and LESS information from a DATABASE Website but hooray we got fancy big pictures everywhere.

I am a active data contributer (6 times top 250 of the year sometimes top 50) but if this is the design direction you are going for I will consider giving up contributing.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Will poll numbers plummet?.

Polls can now only be found in the editors picks.
It is no longer viewed as a featured part of the Home Page but in the editors pick scrolling section.
Also today's rollout of the new page in the USA had the way to the poll page hard to find (If you are a new user).
Also sadly there are around 20 editors picks and the one poll shown was a new Oscars poll by urbane (Congrats). But the placement was next to last on the new scroll right feature (Like Netfix's page).
Finding our polls for a new user to IMDb will not be easy. Most new users will never know that there are polls.

A sad day indeed for us.

Comments?

It is so stupid. IMDb will keep a lot of sections which people are not gonna access anymore, simply because it is gonna be hard to find. The access to the polls and news will drop, the users are not gonna be stimulated to give their ratings, etc. The homepage simply doesn't match with the site content. And besides it is UGLY. People don't buy UGLY.

I share the same feeling as many others about the site change. Probably the worst web site change IMDB has done. There was nothing wrong with the previous layout. Not to mention the new layout is a complete eyesore.

I am already subscribed to enough streaming services, I am well aware of what is available for streaming. IMDB has always been a great source of news and information, not a giant ad campaign for what's streaming and what you think we should watch.

Daily visits are not going to continue.

What a terrible, terrible change. This simply doesn't feel like the IMDb, the best movie site and most complete database ever, it is simply a streaming service to watch popular videos and trailers, which I can find anywhere else in the Internet and in better designs and functionality.

Also you are hiding sections like news and polls where no one will find them.

The IMDb was unique, why do you want to lost what makes you special?

I will also avoid the homepage completely, it hurts me to see it as it is, I'll enter the databse through the polls page, make it my personal IMDb Homepage and navigate from there while this model exists, which for the sake of everything I hope it is really really shortlived and quickly forgotten.

I am VERY dissapointed with IMDB stuff.
I have been a faitful user for many years now. Never had any real complaint about this site. Just like Col himself has said in his latest new years' message "Feel free to let us know about any constructive criticism using our GetSatisfaction forum".

All right, I've had my problems with the new menu design, the new video player, the new homepage.
Maybe I should listen to Col's advice and contribute some feedback?
In hindsight, now I understand that it's really useless and those words were nothing but empty promises.
For TWO MONTHS now I am relegated to using my own shortcuts to get through to certain sections of the website, because your new menu design for tablets is missing direct links it once had.
For ONE MONTH I am forced to watch all of IMDB videos and trailers on your own YouTube channel instead of doing it right here on the website, because the new videoplayer is slow, uneccesary large and borderline unasable with its lack of X-out and mute by default.

I've described these problems in two separate threads twice, two months have passed and I got no answer from the crew, not even a simple "Thank you, we will look up onto this" or "This is the way it's designed from now on, sorry for the inconvinience". I just got NOTHING.

And now this homepage... I don't even wanna start, just + 1 to many points mentioned previously - the thumbnails are too big, the functionality is lessened, everything is designed with the phone browsing in mind and looks horrible on the desktop, it isn't the look of a database it's the look of a streaming site, and so on...

So now, adding to using my own bookmarks to get through to Coming Soon or Release Calendar section on tablet, and using YouTube to watch your own original IMDB videos, now I'm also given the joy to avoid the new homepage at all times and remember not to use my previous "IMDB/home" bookmark.
And this is what I'm supposed to "benefit from"?
IMDB, you've really failed me.

The only reply we get from IMDb staff here is to tell us how great and functional the new homepage is, which is bulls**t because it's the exact opposite. Don't look for any IMDb staff to address the problems we are having because it's apparent they are living in their own fantasy world.

I'm not a regular visitor of this forum, I don't really know how things work around here.
I have seen many answers from people decorated with "Stuff" badges in every second post in Problems and Questions sections, and I thought well if they had the time to answer poorly articulated questions like "I cant find a movie" or "Help me with my poll", they surely would take their time to acknowledge my throughly described problems with new updates.
Turns out I was very wrong and that is the main reason of my dissapointment with IMDB, not the design changes and flaws, which are, unfortunately, inevetable for every website in due time.

Well, there is a separation between routine trivial problems and the chronic complex problems. The former will generate lovely and adequately stock responses, whereas the latter will generate delayed specialized responses or sometimes "response" comes in the form of a massive overhaul after a period of years.

Dear IMDb Editors,

I would say, "That's one small step for IMDb Editors, one giant leap for customer dissatisfaction."

Do our feedback really matter to you? I have been a member to this awesome website for last 6 years (since 2014). During this time period you have,

1. Shut down IMDb Message Board.
2. Shut down 'Character' pages.
3. Shut down all IMDb 'Character' Polls.

And now,

4. Shut down the IMDb Poll section from the home page.

As an old IMDb Poll author, I believe for a poll author getting his/her poll featured on the home page is the highest honor for his/her. And now you have taken that happiness from us.

Also, about the website design, I prefer the old version to this new look.

-------------------------------

I know my feedback doesn't matter to you guys and the website design will remain as it is right now, just like you never changed your decision in the previous cases to satisfy the customer needs.

Also, I have a feeling that I may lose my IMDb account because of that 'modified' Neil Armstrong quote in the beginning.

Regards

DC

There were times that I disagree with you, but in this one you are 110/100 right. I couldn't agree more.

Hi, Dibyayan Chakravorty. You've met the founder of IMDb in person, and you've been nice to him and everybody on here for over a decade, so I would think you're protected in an above-average kind of way.

Hi, please find below some personal tips to improve the new home page:
  1. Everything is too big: nowadays most desktop users have a 24" or 27" screen and on such a screen, the home page looks like an enormous mobile phone. Some items are really huge: they take one third of the screen. Please make everything a little bit smaller so you can fit more items on the screen. Now the overview is completely lost. On the old home page I had to click "page down" only 4x to get to the bottom, now it's 6x with much less information.
  2. News is really important for everybody and a main reason to come back often, so please bring it back to the home page. Because isn't this essentially what you want: visitors who come back regularly?
  3. Please keep a permanent "Featured Poll" on the home page which is visible without scrolling, because again, this is a reason for visitors to come back and to come on a regular basis. And please, please add a permanent link to the other polls because otherwise only a couple of 100 users will ever know that there are other polls somewhere out there on IMDb.
  4. The "Recently viewed" section at the bottom takes a lot of space from the home page and is completely unnecessary. I don't need to be reminded each time when I visit the IMDb home page which searches I recently did on IMDb. A button in the drop down menu of my account with "recent searches" would perfectly do the same job and saves a lot of space, e.g. for a permanent spot of the "Featured Poll".
  5. Finally don't overuse the right-scrolling, Netflix-scrolling or mobile phone right-sweeping or whatever you want to call it, because that's not what people do on a desktop. They can not scroll by touching the screen so you have to use your mouse to do this which takes a lot of time. Good tip: make the items smaller and make them all fit on one screen. You will get a lot more hits on all the items, I'm sure!
I hope you will take my constructive feedback into consideration which is really meant to improve the IMDb experience for everybody!

"The new homepage is designed to help IMDb customers..." Bla bla bla.

No, it is not. First, because we don't need help to find anything on the website. We're not children, we're not persons with learning difficulties either. Second, the new homepage is mainly designed to promote or sell something.
Have I said yet we're not stupid ?

I cannot help but notice that not a single person in this thread (and preceding ones too actually) concerning the new homepage design said something even remotely positive about it.
From what I can understand (again, I'm new here so it may be hard to tell who's who) it got to the point that even local Champions, Top Contributors and other high-ranking users are joining in the negativity chorus.
I mean, that really says something about the quality of changes made, now does it?

In case somebody from the team actually reads through this, I can also pinpoint that almost every single complaint concerns the same limited number of things, and they keep on repeating over and over again. Top3 would definetly be:
1. Everything is too large, swiping-based and phone-centric
2. News and polls are missing
3. Black background which greatly contradicts the look of all the other sections of the website

And the last thing I also wanted to mention. Or, to be more precise - to raise awareness in fellow users, who may read through this, since now the new homepage is available to all, many dissapointed IMDB members probably will read through this topic in the  following days, and the exposure here could be greater than that of a simple post.

I presume that this homepage is only the beginning.
I know a thing or two about webdesign and have the experience of managing a popular website.
What we see here (on the new homepage and menu) is a complete redesign from scratch, and if we do not presume that IMDB staff are incompetent (and they definetly aren't), no cheif-designer in his right mind would let the homepage contradict with the way all the other sections look and navigate.
Which means that what we see now only on the homepage could very well be the way the WHOLE site will look in a very near future.
You can see many signs pinpoiting in that direction for yourselves.

My goal in writing this is simply to raise awareness about the possible update, and at least try my best to prevent it from happening, because if it will - the current problem of just avoiding the new homepage will be peanuts compared with catastrophe of completely losing IMDB as a source of information.
Thank you for your attention.

I couldn't agree more. I too was worried that they will redesign every page. I'm hoping that since it's only the homepage that it's a beta and they will, after realizing all the hate of the new design, scrap the whole plan. All I have to say is if they change ANYTHING to the pages for movies or actors I will never go on this website again. I will avoid it like the plague and remove the app from my phone. That's the only thing keeping me visiting this. I'm currently just avoiding the homepage. If those pages are changed in any way to make it difficult to find information on a page about a movie or actor, then I wash my hands of IMDb entirely.

The change is awful. I've posted about this before and it was fine because I could log out of my imdb account and get the old home page but now the new home page always displays. It's beyond terrible and ruins the entire experience. The site is borderline unusable. Everyone hates the change... at the very least give us a 'classic' option.

Forgive the "Likers" for they know not what they are doing. They are probably very young and don't know better. Just the kind of people IMDb wants.

First they ruined box office mojo and now imdb. New look is terrible for desktop. It shows less content and the fonts are blurry. Why does everything need to be big? Please revert it back the way it was. Bootstrap is ruining the internet!
