Is possible to exclude a genre in advanced search?

I'm trying to search the best sci-fi and fantasy TV series, but they return a excessive number of animations, especially animes, is possible to filter out said animations?

Hello Cristiane,
It is possible, but a bit tricky.
You can do it if you use the Advanced Title Search at http://www.imdb.com/search/title
There you can specify exactly which Genres you want to include (leave the Animation Genre unticked). Just tick Sci-Fi and Fantasy

I wish that what you posted worked. But if I delete the "&!genres=comedy" portion of the URL, I get the same number of films as with it. I tried putting the ! before the = and before comedy, and none of those 3 permutations does anything to the search.

Thanks for the answer, but this doesn't work because many titles have more than a genre, than unmarking Animation will exclude only animations which aren't also fantasy or sci-fi

Col: This doesn't appear to work. I tried doing a search for Fantasy and Sci-Fi TV series that produced the following URL, with animated Fantasy-Sci-Fi series in the results:

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=tv_series&num_votes=2000,&genres=fantasy,sci_fi&...

Then I tried adding &!genres=animation to the URL so it became:

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=tv_series&num_votes=2000,&genres=fantasy,sci_fi&...

But that didn't change the results. There were still plenty of animated series in the results, including at #1 on the list.

Was I putting &!genres=animation at the wrong place in the URL? Or is the ! (NOT) operator no longer supported?

Whoops, my error, sorry.  The "!" notation used to work, but it is no longer supported.  In my test above it just so happens none of the most popular titles in view (results 1 to 5) are comedies so I thought it was working again.

What do you mean no longer supported? You can't just remove functionality.

Not unless you could find a list of the titles you want to Exclude. Then you could use this method (since I'm assuming the list wouldn't be yours): Advanced Title Search for Lists NOT Your Own

If you'd like to vote for IMDb implementing filters that exclude genres, that is posted here:

Or maybe we'll get a pleasant surprise, and IMDb is about to release such a feature...

I was having the same issues and found that generating a AnimationSeriesKillList was the only way I could specifically kill animation from the advanced search listings on IMDb for TV series. If you want to do the same you can import my AnimationSeriesKillList for TV series from here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls023344622/
Note that this is only necessary for TV series. The website https://cinesift.com/ has extremely complex search filtering functions for MOVIES, but unfortunately doesn't work with TV series so I manually created the animation list.
