Is there any check on rating of the user reviews? More openess would prevent cheating.

I wonder whether IMDB checks the (pattern of) rating of user reviews by other reviewers.

Firstly it seems that rating a review as helpful or not helpful is used more as a like/not like, thus as a way to express agreement or disagreement with the opinion of the reviewer. I may not agree with a reviewer, but his review may be well written or helpful to make a choice (which is the goal of the review after all).

Secondly, it strikes me that new reviews (of recent movies) regularly get  0/1 or 0/2 "likes" (whether they are positive reviews or negative or negative ones) and I wonder whether there are 1-2 reviewers giving a thumb done on purpose to get a higher rank. As other commenters have mentioned the  "most helpful" reviews are not necesarily the best, the oldest one have more chance to end up high and cheating helps too.

It would help if we could see who rated a review helpul or not. You clearly cheat if you find all reviews unuseful  except your own.

At the very least there should be an automatic check on irregular voting patterns.

(I just began posting reviews. It takes a lot of time and I find it rather frustrating to see people cheating on this. Makes me wonder if it is worth the effort writing other ones)
