Italian place-names are followed by an indication of province and region
in IMDB. This is a mistake. The region should not appear. For instance,
Marcello Mastroianni is listed as born in Fontana Liri, Lazio, Italy.
The proper Italian way to indicate this town (under your Submission
Guide/ Locations, one should "use the normal
'in country'/postal definition of the location") is "Fontana Liri
(FR)". If "FR" is too puzzling for non-Italians, then one could spell
out the name of the province, as in: Fontana Liri (Frosinone). The
region (Lazio in this case) is redundant and even misleading, because
there may be more than one village (and indeed there are two) called --
say -- San Benedetto in Lazio but there is only one San Benedetto (LT)
and one San Benedetto (VT) (in the provinces of Latina and Viterbo,
respectively). Identical place names are never found within a province,
but they are not uncommon in a region. When a town is the main town of a
province, like in our cases Latina and Viterbo (or Rome, Milan, or
Siena for that matter), no further specification is needed, as in:
Siena, Italy.
For your comfort, you are not alone: Google Maps make the same mistake. I will write to them, too.
I understand this cannot be corrected overnight, but I hope that a new course may now start.
