The Children's Hour (9/10)

There is a lot to talk about this movie when the movie was released, the code Hays was still applied and the mentality towards LGBTQIA2+ was only beginning to evolve. At its time, the movie was one of the first to directly depicts homosexuality. some movies like Ben-Hur, Rope did it more subtly, however. William Wyler had already depicted this story in These Tree, but he had to comply much more with the code Hays, this is why he decided out of respect for the original play to remake the movie more faithfully. This adaptation is hard, it is depressive in a way that we don't see a lot in cinema. One of the rare examples of "Riches to Rags".

Sadly, this movie was censored in a lot of countries upon release and stupidly remain 18+ in my own country. More precisely, in Nova Scotia where it is still 18+. I have to accord that there is no happy ending to the film, but this is how it creates a powerful impression on the viewer, as I see it, Martha didn't suicide, she was killed by to society. This movie goes even farther than where Jagten went in 2012. A lot of movies in the last decade have depicted realistically, homosexuality, but you have to keep in mind that The Children's Hour was very progressive at his time.

LGBT and LGBTQ are the most frequently used form, and you won't get backlash if you use them, but I expect that in a few years, LGBTQIA2+ is gonna be the norm.

Ok. Honestly, I think that's too many letters, it might become the PC term but it's not very easy to use... especially in a casual conversation, or if new letters come out. I think a generic term like "Rainbow Community" for instance would be more convivial but LGBT was fine as it was, I dont think it was meant to exclude other sexualities.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, 7/10.
Wonderful and heartfelt film.  If it's at all accurate, Fred Rogers was an incredibly kind person, though secretly pained in his own way.

It's pretty far from reality.

"The Narrative Between Lloyd Vogel And His Father Is Entirely FictionalizedThat includes the overarching narrative between Lloyd Vogel and his father, Jerry Vogel, played by Oscar winner Chris Cooper. Throughout the movie, Lloyd Vogel holds a long-standing grudge against his father, for reasons that are revealed throughout the course of the movie. As Jerry starts to get sick, however, and Lloyd Vogel spends more time with Fred Rogers and listens to his methods about coping with your burning feelings of anger and resentment, as well as learning to forgive those who have hurt you in the past, Lloyd Vogel begins to heal the bond with his ill father — particularly since he is a recent father himself.

Almost all of this is entirely fake. Scenes where Lloyd Vogel passes out on the set of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and Fred Rogers visits Jerry Vogel with a pie are created for the dramatic purposes of the story and have no baring on reality. That said, one anecdote from Tom Junod's piece helps inform this narrative. When Mr. Rogers meets a child with cerebral palsy, Fred Rogers asks the kid to pray for him, because he thinks "anyone who has gone through challenges like that must be very close to God." Subsequently, Tom Hanks' Rogers asks Jerry Vogel to pray for him, since the TV personality claims that "someone who is suffering that much must be very close to God."

When it comes to the movie's depiction of Fred Rogers, however, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is generally factual."

I was, indeed, interested to read this. :)

As for Shane (1953) connection... Western is one of those genres prone to reusing certain mythical and yet modern plots. Look no further as to how often Yojimbo/Red Harvest/A Fistful of Dollars pastiche pops up (btw, "Complete Guide" is an outdated notion in this list: there's more, much more) in westerns and other genres crossing over.

Moonlight 2016 - 7/10

I had high expectations from this movie, but didn't reach there enough. Some scenes were like in your face and they were great. Particularly I didn't like last chapter much.

Il postino 1994 - 8/10

A Musical romance. The music was awesome along with poetry. It also spoke about the politics and its effect on the people on the backdrop of a romance.

Smoke 1995 - 7/10

The movie has a niche feel and sometimes you seemingly root for the characters, but the story didn't seem to go anywhere. Even the chapters with title character didn't focus on them much.

The Trip to Greece (2020). Debuted to streaming today.
A fitting end to the decade's running quadrilogy.

Seen the other films at the movie theater. Shame I couldn't do that here.
The Trip to Spain (2017)
The Trip to Italy (2014)
and The Trip (2010).

As per the usual, a great source for food porn (though much of what they eat is a bit too Haute cuisine for my taste. Hysterically funny and the banter and chemistry between Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan ... so perfect. Not a documentary but they loosely play themselves.... They don't skimp on the bittersweet.

I saw Back to the Future at a drive-in last night for a flashback night... it was an extremely fun experience, and I give the film 9 stars, up from my previous 8.  I highly recommend it!

Momo: The Missouri Monster, 1/10.  I usually love all the movies in the Small Town Monsters series, but this is one is just weird!  It's poorly made, and wastes my time on a fake 70's bigfoot movie.  Very disappointing.  I thought they could do better with my own state creature!

Mulholland Dr. (9/10)

One of the best movies of the 21st Century and of all time.

1) I loved how the plot is so bizarre that you have the rely as Lynch said,  on your intuition. I don't want to understand or to put the theme in words because it would ruin.

2) This film got a lot of neo-noir vibe and I'm a lover of Neo-noir, the music is epic, and the nocturn scenes are hypnotizing.

3) David Lynch should have won the Oscar for "Best Director". The movie should have also got nominations for "Best Picture" (won), "Best Film Editing" (won) "Best Screenplay"(won), "Best Actress in a Leading Role" (won), "Best Actress in a Supporting Role" (Lost), "Best Score" (Lost).

cinephile, amazingly, I've only seen the unaired 1999 TV pilot version of that movie so far, a rare one which only exists in bootlegs. It was still great, nonetheless.

Am also a great neo-noir addict. :) Many things three Davids (David LynchDavid Cronenberg and David Fincher) do, are its own subgenre, psycho-noir. It is one of my favorite sub-genres ever.

No, I didn't watch Lost Highway. The other movies from Lynch that I have watched are Dune (1984) and The Elephant Man (1980)

I know that he hates Dune, but personally, it is one of the most imaginative sci-fi film that I have watched.

I can't wait to discover his other trademark movies.

cinephile, totally agree aboout the unrealistic point being different when it comes to different standards. Lynch very purposefuly creates the world for each of his productions, something with dream logic rather than real one most of the time.

Awakenings 1990 - 8/10

Miracles happen, but the magic fade away. It handles the subject nicely. I was so close to thinking this as De Nero's wasted role, but after halfway, he is another actor. You will surely get an awakening!!

A Few Good Man 1992 - 8/10

For a courtroom drama, this had concept similar to 'The Caine Mutiny'. This is one of the best performance from Tom Cruise and Jake Nicholson is just great. The only thing is we always know that he is going to win, so suspense is not whether he wins or not, it is how will he win.

My Life As A Dog 1985 - 7/10

The story of a disturbed child. He just wants to be relevant and do good to others, but end up mostly on wrong end. Then he finds a place where he gets what he want. The theme is great. The performances of child actors is good, but others are average.

The Hunt For Red October 1990 - 8/10

The drama, acting, production design all was great. The obvious comparison is 'Das Boot' and this one lacks in showing tension on screen. You know things will happen. The scenes does not invoke the expression to make you feel about the things that are happening.

Back to the Future Part 2, 8/10.  I retracted one star simply because it didn't have quite the same impact on me as the first one... but it is still an amazing, quality film!  As someone I was talking to recently pointed out, it was refreshing to see that the filmmakers had a positive view of the future - there were not mutations or games-where-kids-kill-each-other.

Back to the Future Part 3, 7/10.  I'd give it 7 and a half if I could.
This is mainly because by the third time, playing out the same little situations starts to kinda wear thin.  Plus the Old West isn't very entertaining to me.  Still, it is a fun, exciting film, and no matter how many times you watch it (or the other two) you will still feel nervous as to what will happen in the end!

That alone proves that the entire trilogy is a work of art.

If I was feeling generous, I could have rated the hour-long video a two or three out of ten. Though the songs were terribly boring and bland, some of the actors were Off-Broadway talented.

I choose to be stingy to spite them all.

The Flash, Season 6

Not objectively "bad" but easily the worst season to date in what has been the most consistently good of the CW's DC series.

Season 6 rating: 8/10
Cumulative rating: 9/10

Supergirl, Season 5

This show has bounced back after rather lacklustre Seasons 3 & 4. The writers have clearly realised that substituting action and plot development with lengthy SJW "lecture" scenes are not good for ratings. Kudos to Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor as a strong season antagonist & the character development of Katie McGrath's Lena Luthor.

SELINA, unpopular opinion, but Seasons 3 and 4 of "Supergirl" was a breath of fresh air for me, since both of them exuded very realistic problems I never quite expected to see in that series. For me it's this season that has bad pacing and padding problems. When it's good it's still good, but many episodes go to nowhere. Some do that twice.

As for "The Flash": it's an okay season, especially considering it ended abruptly due to pandemic. I like how both antagonists are relatively low-key, but have enough to interest you and are nicely portrayed.

I'm slowly catching up with CW and boy, am I glad that "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" is the only show that actually fully filmed season  storyline, it's easily my favorite out of the bunch now that "Arrow" ended its run. That said, I really like "Batwoman" but boy is that show a troubled production. It has all the potential for full-on "Gotham" craziness (it even borrows some of the breakway characters from it!), though and since that show also never knew where it goes and still made wonders, I'm hopeful.
