Simply a follow up to Jen's great post; there were getting to be so many pages in that one I thought it could use a refresh.  Happy to carry on the tradition!

Last night:
FLCL (TV Mini-Series 2000–2018), so damn difficult to pinpoint and rate. Solid and enjoyable soundtrack; great English dub; great character designs and animation. It's chaotic and ruled by Looney Tunes physics. A lot of really personal moments and great character chemistry. More than its fair share of utterly WTF is happening moments.

Okay, the protagonist is a 12-year-old bratty twat. So whiny but he ain't hateable. He's still sympathetic given his circumstances. Even for a 6 episode run, I felt so damn irritated throughout the short stretch. I can only give it a 7/10. Still, deserves its legendary cult anime status.

I suspect it's the Catcher in the Rye of anime. I wonder how much I would have loved and obsessed over this one if watched is a teen when first experiencing it.

The Scrapped Princess, a single season of anime from 2003. It has a very good English dub (for the main cast but a few lesser characters... sometimes not so much) so you don't have to worry about those pesky subtitles. The music is quite wonderful as well. Got a lot of heart and light comedy too.

The chemistry between the three siblings: Pacifica (the Scrapped Princess), Shannon, and Raquel make a wonderful watch. There Will Be Tears. You've been warned.

Great world-building and magic system make for a wonderful and original fantasy series.
9/10.

The OP is really anime cheese but still so much grin-inducing and charming.

I must literally have been on drugs when I first watched and enjoyed this.

Awful.

Adrian, not Champion, It mostly delivered on the promise it made to fans back in 1993.

Not a perfect movie, but not exactly bad, as well. Both franchises seen worse outings.

Well, in the 90s and early 2000s I loved those movies.

I have been rewatching them recently and the only ones I still enjoy are the original Elm Street (1984), the original Friday the 13th (1980), and Wes Craven's New Nightmare (c.1994?).

I find the rest awful.

My tastes have changed, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Out of Sight 1998 - 7/10

The neo-noir theme of the movie is highlight and George Clooney has a charm all over. Apart from that, it is a run of the mill story, though enjoyable watch.

Raising Arizona 1987 - 7/10

Another fun movie. This movie has Coen brothers' sign all over it. The guy falls in love with a cop and the search for a complete family by stealing a baby and that is where the fun begins. It is equally emotional as well.

Yeah Meri Family 2018 (Season 1) - 9/10

All nostalgia for a 90s Indian kid. It is full of emotion, fun, laughter and family values. The actors are great and true depiction of a family.

Money Heist 2017 - 9/10

Season 1 - There are 2 parallel tracks running throughout and it hooks you to the story equally. You feel for each character. The best things are characterizations, emotion in middle of chaos and the gang.

Season 2 - The gang is back again with some new members and most of old members for a bigger scale heist. This follows similar trend as to season 1, and equally fulfills the level of that to. This one has better action sequences because of production scale. And the drama isn't complete with 2 parts.

Eagerly waiting for part 3 of season 2.

The Vast of Night, 2/10.  What utter garbage.  :/  https://www.imdb.com/review/rw5819860/?ref_=ur_urv

The Mandela Effect, 2019... 8/10.  One of the best movies I've seen this year, besides Back to the Future.  Amazing.
I do not believe we are in a simulation, but I am somehow educated on the Mandela Effect, so I found the film very interesting.  I mean, most of the effects can be attributed to faulty memory, but it's still a fun study.  :)

I'll have to watch that.

The latter, of course.

If you hadn't guessed, I attribute the entire phenomenon to faulty memory.

Without giving away to much, I am in a unique position geographically and with respect to certain academic research I used to be involved in to be pretty confident about my position on the issue.

How are you doing, otherwise?

Yeah, I attribute it to memory, too.  It's still fascinating that that many people (inclusing myself, in some instances) can completely misremember.  I'm still puzzled about Kazam, though xD!

I'm doing well, thanks for asking!  :D  How have you been?

The Mandela Effect (2019)

**I do not endorse the "explanation" for this phenomenon given in the film, nor any other explanations given for this phenomenon on the Internet and elsewhere.

Assessed purely as a work of Fantasy / Science Fiction, good movie.

I gave it a 7 too. it is better than your average Netflix movie. Characters are more developed than usual. Also, the story is less predictable and more sensitive.

I get the Delroy Lindo Oscar buzz that's starting to percolate. That's fair.

Some of the scoring choices were a bit off. EG: the first battle flashback was a bit too much and too-on-the-nose Saving Private adjacent.

Some of the scene blocking was noticeable awkward. It still had some really authentic emotional moments.

Rewatched Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) Easily my favorite Marvel movie. And when I rewrite my top 100 favorite films, Spiderverse will likely end up somewhere in my top 20.

If you haven't seen it already? 1. Shame on you. 2. It's free on Netflix. 3. Watch it already!

Ladyworld (2018)

I didn't go in expecting much, given its poor IMDb rating and novice writer-director.

The idea of a Lord of the Flies film in a contemporary urban setting with female characters was intriguing enough for me to give it a chance.

The 2 lead young actresses (I recognised one as the Dinosaur girl from Runaways) tried really hard, but there is only so much an actor can do with such a shit script.

Conclusion: The IMDb rating of 3.5 is way too generous. More like a 2/10.

Hush - 6/10. After the face reveal, the tension was pretty much eliminated for me.. Moreover, the main characters were acting quite stupid every now and then imho. I liked the concept though for a horror/thriller.

It got a solid 7/10 from me.

More than a horror movie, it is a twisted spectacle, difficult to digest that it could be a revolution for the genre, as Hereditary was. Although it is more bizarre than Hereditary, it is still not as complex and is more messy and inordinately long than the last one.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) (6/10)

It is not a bad movie, but definitely not on the level Mulhollan Dr. or Lost Highway. Honestly, it looks like a TV movie.

1) The directing is decent, but the originality fell short, I have the impression that he copied himself.

2)  He made this movie a prequel to the series but made it so explanatory that you don't need to have watched the TV Series to understand this movie.

In resume, this movie can feel nice if you haven't heard about the series, otherwise, it is almost pointless to watch like El Camino.

Respect your opinion, but feel the need to defend the movie on several points:

TV Movie Point) It's really not, considering how TV movies looked in 70's to early 90's. Keep in mind, "Twin Peaks" was one of the first shows on US television to be filmed as a more cinematic experience. Ironically, Mulholland Dr. (2001) is basically an expanded TV movie, a failed pilot from 1999. It has certain TV giveaways, especially considering how early 2000's TV looked.
2) Lynch does not copy himself that much, he's just very idiosyncratic and has A LOT of returning elements. His directing style is so distinct that it's fully on display in his commercials, let alone movies.
3) It is not only a prequel, per se. It's prequel AND sequel at the same time, with several scenes being after the original series finale. I generally don't understand watching prequels before original movies (unless filmmakers specified it should be that way, of which Star Wars is the only case I remember), but in this case it's absoluely should be seen after the original series.

Any plans on watching Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces (2014)? It's practically a separate feature on its own and a great bridge between FWWM and Season 3.

Warrior (2011) (7/10)

Good movie overall.

The story revolving around brothers fighting each other but for different reasons is more developed than in many other fighting movies, you can't choose your side, both are excellent and well-written characters that are explored deeply in the first half of the movie.

The second half is a great gift for fans of sports movies, you have non-stop and well-edited fighting scenes. However, I feel that the fights of Tommy were too short and unrealistic. This is where a gap is created between the onscreen time of each character. Fortunately, Tom Hardy's performance catch-up this gap.

To conclude, this may not be worthy of the top 250, but it is the best fighting movie since Million Dollar Baby.

Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964) (8/10)

It is an ageless movie. But do you a favor, if you don't like musicals, don't watch this movie, it is entirely musical.

This movie has amazing cinematography, it is almost poetry, in this case, it reinvented the code even before movies like The Graduate, and the pastel colors depicting the 1950s are great in every circumstance.

Now, I want to warn again possible viewers that all the plot is sung, it can be very surprising and destabilizing at the first viewing as the dialogue aren't that great, they were mainly written to fit the tone of the film and the beat of the music.

Finally, except for being a Palme D'or, this movie has an important cultural impact just recently, Damien Chazelle' La La Land went on theater, and it is strongly inspired by "Les parapluies de Cherbourg". In other words, you have to know the bases and the classics like this movie.

Eli (2019)

Maybe I am just in a bad mood due to nicotine withdrawal, but this is yet another film I have seen over the past days that I thought was pretty lame.

Mish mash of various horror tropes that have been done before, and better; with some Sci-Fi thrown in.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 9/10 - Definitely get why this movie withstood the test of time. The only flaw for me concerned the acting performances at times, although most of the time it was good (liked the performance of Johnny Depp a lot).

Watched the infamous English dub (created in 2005) of Ghost Stories (2000- ) with so many outdated and wildly inappropriately funny/awkward references.

They really have a thing against Christian Slater.

One of the most bizarre EDs in anime. This was the ED credits song for the original series when it was a horror for kids anime, not the wildly inappropriate teen/adult-targeted comedy.

True Romance 1993 - 8/10
Very near to become a Tarantino movie, but rightly isn't. This has little different feel and it is nice movie and is refreshing.

American Graffiti 1983 - 8/10
There are several characters in the story and what happened to them during a single night. The music, cars, and exploration of a being.

The Producers 1967 - 7/10
It is funny from the word go. But, as the drama settles, the laughing moments aren't as often.

Gallipoli 1981 - 8/10
The story is about 2 mates from meeting each other, crossing the desert and then joining the army. This has all the emotion that a war drama needs.

Blazing Saddles 1974 - 8/10
Another Mel Brooks movie, and I think this one surpasses The Producers. The satire and comic moments are great.

Marona's Fantastic Tale (2019), 7/10. Jenky low budget animated French film.
Ironic title as the title dog had a pretty banal life.

Really ugly character design. Still, an authentic movie with heart from the perspective of the dog, Nine (the name his mother gave him).

Le dernier métro (1980) (7/10)

A wonderful movie with a good story and actors, but François Truffaut this time wasn't able to adapt his tone to the story, it is filmed like a fairy tale for children.

To begin with, I have a lot of praise for the amazing performances. Especially Gérard Depardieu, this movie is really representative of his talent and his range of interpretations if you want to look at other movies with similar performances, I recommend Germinal and La Femme d'à côté.

The directing is fun to watch and lighthearted, but this tone didn't feel appropriate to the movie, he uses the same trademarks and gimmick, but one can't simply make a pure lighthearted movie about the WWI. I have nothing against satire, but this movie wasn't a satire, and the tone that Truffaut used to depict the events doesn't pay homage to the tragedy.

Add to the previous argument, that the storytelling is full of plot holes, that the pay-offs are poorly introduced and that the beginning of the story is very slow, not much is happening.

For all those reasons, this movie is worth a 7/10, it is an enjoyable movie with extraordinary performances, but not more.

I couldn't wait until the 1/2 of the year so I'm posting the results of my resolutions (made a few months ago) here:

See all top 250 movies: I saw 175 of  Top 250 movies (still disappointing)

See all Best Picture Winners: I have seen 49 Best Pictures (shame on me)

See all Oscar Highlights of the last 10 years: I need to see 38 films to get them all

See all Audrey Hepburn movies: I have seen only 22% of her movies (shame on me)

See at least 500 movies: So far, I saw 250 films in 171 days for an average of 1.46 films a day.
