Simply a follow up to Jen's great post; there were getting to be so many pages in that one I thought it could use a refresh.  Happy to carry on the tradition!

Lucy (2014)

Decent movie. For some reason, the use of the "we only use 10% of our brain" myth in this film bugged me more than it did in Limitless and other Science Fiction / Science Fantasy titles.

6/10

Bride of the Gorilla (1951), another terrible schlocky film featuring Golden Globe nominee Raymond Burr. 1/10. 10/10 for the Bridget Nelson and Mary Jo Pehl RiffTrax commentary.

For a native police commissioner, Lon Cheney's character relies a bit too much on the wacky weed.

These movies aren't sold as masterpieces, you have to watch them open-minded.

Personally, I think that it is decent, I even have it on DVD.

Yeah, back in the day I'm sure this was a scare-fest.
So weird how the definition of what's scary can change through the years.

Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho 10/10

One of the sweetest movies I have ever seen & only the 16th movie so far that I have given a 10 out of 10. Story is simple, but very touching imho.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
, rewatch. Downgraded to a 7/10.
Finally got around to watching it with the very rare all-star Rifftrax commentary track.
9/10 for the Rifftrax spiel. Bought it two years ago. Thanks HBO Max for the BvS streaming opportunity.

"Along with team leaders Mike v. Kevin v. Bill, we’ve got riffing powerhouses:

Mary Jo Pehl v. Bridget Nelson!

Frank Conniff v. Trace Beaulieu!

Janet Varney v. Cole Stratton!

Matthew Elliott v. Ian Potter!"

Highlander (1986)
, rewatch 3/10 (keeping my earlier rating). 9/10 for the Rifftrax commentary.

How in the Hell didn't Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown all get Razzie nominations?

Stephen Atwood, 3/10, really?.. Also, all three performances are great and don't deserve a Razzie in a slightest. Not that I've ever given a credit to this anti-award, it slammed too much great movies over the years and had proven to have no hindsight whatsoever.

Highlander (1986) is one of my all-time favorite movies. Surely, it had its share of oddities and limitations, but... What shines through those limitations is practically something so eternal and great that it's pure cinema magic. To be fair, I even like at least first three sequels, all of them have some of their own merit.

Claims to be a crime thriller, but actually is a hilarious dark comedy, told "Vantage Point" style.

Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta (1986) (9/10)

2nd best animated movie behind Princess Mononoke.

He is the 7th director to have directed 2 or more of my favorite films.

List of the  49 directors to have directed the 72 movies that I rated 9/10 or 10/10: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls098541229/

Simply a more precise rating system. Since I ranked all those movies 10 or 9 on IMDb, I needed to differentiate them so I added 2 digits after the period.

It is mainly about feeling. I only five the same rating when I get the same feeling from two different movies.

Underwater, 5/10.  Call me nuts, but I kinda liked it.  It's obviously not the best film ever, but it's okay.  It pretty spooky (especially for someone like me, who hates deep, dark water).  I hate Kristen Stewart's performance most of the time, but it's good.
If you like water monsters and suspense, see it.  :)

Sorry, Barbara Ann.  :)

Ying (2018) (8/10)

A rare epic tragedy, the cinematography, and the sound mixing are gorgeous. The main actor is amazing, I realized that he played two characters only after one hour.

I'm contemplating giving it a 9/10, but for now, I will stick with the 8/10.

PS: If you dislike this film, you truly have no taste in cinema.

Fast & Furious (2009) (5/10)

Justin Lin is a living joke...

He successfully made the dumbass movie three times before realizing that it is ####.

Then, the dude directed this 4th piece of ####, but he still can't give up the gear shift shot, he uses it literally every damn 4 seconds!!!!

In this movie, the actors are son damn trash. Whatever happens, these actors are always doing the "poker face" even Dom when he learns that his girlfriend died or when he learned that the forgettable character played by Paul Walker is responsible.

Plus, half of the dialogues in this movie are one-liners. Used once or twice, it can look badass, but too much is like not enough.

Dead Man's Curve (1998) aka The Curve

Another "thriller" that was more like a black comedy... hilarious.

"Actual" comedies bore me to death, but films like this and 11:14 which I saw a few days ago have me laughing my a-- off.

Several days ago:
Finished rewatching Samurai Champloo (2004-2005), downgraded from a 10/10 to a 9/10.
Fuu is still one of my all-time female characters in anime. Have to respect her healthy appetite.

One of my favorite credit songs as well as just all-around favorite songs of all time

Tonight:
Another Shin'ichirô Watanabe series, the legendary anime TV producer/director:
Zankyou No Terror (TV Mini-Series 2014– )
, 8/10 (though closer to 7/10). The pacing is pretty off for such a short series and they took too long to bring in the motivation of Nine, Twelve, and they're very 1-dimensional antagonist Five (the weakest part of the series).

Likely end up skipping Star Driver (TV Series), but Space Dandy (TV Series) followed by Kids on the Slope (TV Mini-Series).

The Darkest Hour (2011)

I was going to call this "Poor Man's Cloverfield", until I checked and saw it had a slightly *higher* budget than Cloverfield did.

So blase Cloverfield-wannabe it is then.

I haven't seen "La jetée", but I hope that it is better than the American remake.

Except for the story which is excellent, everything is terrible (the setup/payoff and the actors, the dialogues).

cinephileLa jetée (1962) is a masterpiece. A superb short film mostly made with static images (there's exactly one, often-emulated shot which is actually filmed in a traditional way), and yet, being what practically could be considered a slideshow, it's something you just can't erase from your mind after watching, a terrific experience.

One of the best experimental movies out there.

Zodiac (2007) (7/10)

Not bad, movie David Fincher is only improving his directing skills, but the secondary roles are bland and the screenplay is not amazing.

Despite my rants, my honorable mention is for Jake Gyllenhal's performance even surrounded by mediocrity he is good. (unlike Mark Ruffalo)

Cyrano de Bergerac 1990 - 7/10
The medieval theme is good along with poetry. Nothing novel about it. It felt similar to Much Ado About Nothing, but a bit darker.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape 1993 - 7/10
First time I have seen Johnny Depp playing simple role and that kind of works. The thing that concerned me that I couldn't feel the connect. I liked My Life as a Dog more from the same director.

The Last Emporer 1987 - 7/10
This is a long movie and you feel it. After watching I realized, I should have watched 3 hour version instead. The scenes with Peter O'toole are good, the score is great, sets are good.

Black Butterfly (2017)

Highly engaging, well paced, twisted thriller.

Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers provide superb performances. Piper Perabo provides superb eye candy (& not much else, which is par for the course with her.)

Excellent, highly recommended.

8/10
