This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies and is no longer visible to community members. The community moderator provided the following reason for archiving: IMDb boards

1.) Two logins?  Why do I need another log in to access this forum when we aren't automatically logged into it using our imdb account?

2.) Where did the help desk go?  Are they too lazy to answer emails anymore?

3.) I generally hate forums to ask for help since they get buried under a lot of bulls#!t and are forgotten.  The set-up here stinks yet I have to use it because there's no other way

4.) What's with this use of CAPTCHAs anyway?  This is not a banking site where anything really important needs to be protected.  This is just an entertainment site to get information.  Good grief...

5.) And now we have to use email addresses to long in?  What kind of BS is that?  Just so some spam bots can pick up another email address?   A nickname wouldn't be any help to a spam bot.

More change for the sake of change and make it harder for people around here.  Stupid, utterly stupid!

1)  You need a log in here because it's a different website. It has a lot of extra features here that the old Help Board did not have, including staff that monitors and adds announcements or answer questions if no user have done so.

2)  The Help Desk is where it's always been. I doubt they are lazy.  Perhaps your waiting in line. That happens.  The wait comes and goes as the number of incoming messages increases/decreases.

3)  You don't have to use it at all.  There is a link on the front page to contact staff directly.  Let's lose the rude and offensive language.  It just makes you look like a raving lunatic, which is probably why you tend to get buried by stuff instead of real answers.

4)  CAPTCHA ensures it's a real person not a bot and is probably being used to combat ballot stuffing and other problems they've had.  They don't just add such things for fun...they've likely had a problem and are trying to fix it.

5)  As the main page announcement of the change states, it's to "improve security and standardize the process."

On September 1st, 2014, IMDb will be removing the ability to log into the site using a nickname. Starting on that date, in order to log into their IMDb account, users will need to enter their full email address instead of their IMDb nickname (e.g. Joesmith@gmail.com instead of “JoeTheMovieExpert27”).

This change only affects the login page and is being implemented to improve security and to simplify and standardize the process. It will not alter or remove any of the content previously posted to IMDb using your account, it will not stop users from continuing to have a nickname on their profile or from adding content using a nickname, and it won't affect any other user interaction with the site.  Please note that users who already log into IMDb by entering their email address, or via any of the other log in options (e.g. Amazon, Facebook and Google accounts) will not be impacted.
Of course they have a reason.  To assume it was change simply for the sake of change is way beyond stupid or utterly stupid.

You might want to actually read the announcement about the log in changes. Your email isn't being displayed to anyone; spam bots will not pick it up as you suggest.

You can still display a nickname as you have always been able to do. The only change is to the log in itself; which a spam bot is not going to see.

Your complaint on this issue makes no sense to anyone who has actually read and understood the change.

You mean imdb and amazon don't own this?

It has a lot of extra features here that the old Help Board did not have, including staff that monitors and adds announcements or answer questions if no user have done so.
So are you supposed to be staff or a volunteer?

Staff can actually do something.  A volunteer just holds people's hands.

3)  You don't have to use it at all.  There is a link on the front page to contact staff directly.
Where?

The help button only takes me to this place.  I used to have a staff member respond to me privately when I had a question to ask.  Not something that has to be displayed all over a forum.

Let's lose the rude and offensive language.  It just makes you look like a raving lunatic, which is probably why you tend to get buried by stuff instead of real answers.
No, after being around for the imdb for 10 years, I'm pissed.  But it got your attention, now didn't it?  If it's anything like the amazon forums then you'd know what I mean.

4)  CAPTCHA ensures it's a real person not a bot and is probably being used to combat ballot stuffing and other problems they've had.
Any more information on that?

They don't just add such things for fun...they've likely had a problem and are trying to fix it.
But aren't you staff?  Don't you know why?

Sounds like you're not sure...

More change for the sake of change and make it harder for people around here.  Stupid, utterly stupid!
Not at all.  Other people have been asking the same questions and not getting answers to them.  Likely because they're buried under all the grass growing here.

You mean imdb and amazon don't own this?
Yes.  That is true.

So are you supposed to be staff or a volunteer?
No. Neither.  I am a site user.  Staff has the tag of "employee" or "official rep."  I have neither.

Staff, including the creator and CEO of IMDb Col Needham, that comment here and monitor activity and answer question users can't answer are listed under the "about" tab https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/details/employees

Staff can actually do something.  A volunteer just holds people's hands.

Other users have answered most questions here and most data the site displays has come from Contributors, or users volunteering to gather and submit the info...yet, I'd bet none of them has ever had any inclination to hold your hand. That was a pretty ignorant comment...

Where?

The help button only takes me to this place.  I used to have a staff member respond to me privately when I had a question to ask.  Not something that has to be displayed all over a forum.

Welcome to the official IMDb community, where you can get answers from customer service and IMDb members.

We encourage users to help each other get the most out of IMDb. Often the community provides answers and solutions faster than we can respond directly. For best results, before posting a question or reporting a problem, please click here.

Note: this is a public forum: anything posted here will be visible to everyone.

For issues regarding accounts or questions involving non-public information, please log into your IMDb.com account and contact our support staff privately via this form.
As it explains, the Help Desk is still there and you can still use it without posting here. Note the form at the end.

No, after being around for the imdb for 10 years, I'm pissed.  But it got your attention, now didn't it?  If it's anything like the amazon forums then you'd know what I mean.
No.  It did not get my attention.  It only made me think you're an idiot and you completely lost credibility.  Your language violates the Terms and Conditions of the site and you should just be removed rather than taken seriously...but that's just my opinion.  You're asking valid questions so I'll answer them anyway and leave that issue to staff.

But, simply posting seriously, responsibly and respectfully would have taken you farther.  No...ranting and cursing is not what go you attention (and it probably should have left you with no replies) and will normally not gain you any respect. Most other posts get attention without being abusive...you would/could have too.

CAPTCHA..."Any more information on that?"
No.

But aren't you staff?  Don't you know why?

Sounds like you're not sure...
No.

Other people have been asking the same questions and not getting answers to them.  Likely because they're buried under all the grass growing here.
So what? Staff has no obligation or valid reason to reveal everything they do, especially regarding security issues.

My guess would be, if they've instituted steps to combat abuse and spam and whatnot, probably announcing how and why it works would be a bad idea. Turning over the playbook to the competition would be an idiotic move.

Common sense dictates that an organization would not get together and design changes for no particular reason.  Staff is small on site and they have a huge work load with running a database.  Where they can add automation to reduce their work combating nonsense is just good sense.

1) No, Get Satisfaction is a separate and distinct company. You can check it out here: https://getsatisfaction.com/corp/

2) Users/Contributors as well as IMDb employees offer advice and solutions on this forum. You can check this page : dehttps://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/details. to determine who's who.

3) There is a link on the home page of the IMDb Get Satisfaction Forum which takes you directly to the IMDb Help Desk: http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/contact_....

Users here have tried to provide you answers in spite of your rude and offensive language, not because of it.

If you click on "help" in the upper right hand corner of the main page, there is no link to the helpdesk.  Ok?  It's not there

http://www.imdb.com/help/?ref_=nb_hlp&licb=0.37698592900647443

What I do get on the left, is "Top Frequently Asked Questions"  On the right I get "Help Sections/FAQs"  below that on my right is "Adding Data to IMDb"

There is nothing on that page that says the word "Helpdesk" or "contact our staff" using a form.  The only way I know how to get to it is through that link that jerk bluesmanSF supplied.  I don't know how to get to it through the main menu under the Help link over to my right.

I need to know how to get to it through the imdb main page, not bookmarking through another link.

Every page of IMDb has a "contact us" link.  You don't even need to click "Help."  Many page within the Help area also have the link.

You're describing clicking help, so:

So, on the page you describe, you can search "contact staff" or click the link to "contact staff" or scroll to the bottom of the page to the footers and there is a "contact us" link (which appears on all pages of the site...all of them, so more than 10 million places.

To contact staff, they offer this forum at Get Satisfaction and these staff members are registered here and participate in answering questions or taking care of problems https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/details/employees

There is also a message that give a direct contact form to contact staff directly.

Note: this is a public forum: anything posted here will be visible to everyone.

For billing/payment issues, visit http://www.imdb.com/bill
For issues regarding accounts or questions involving non-public information, please log into your IMDb.com account and contact our support staff privately via this form.
Most sites do it the same way.  The reason you get guided to FAQ's is because they are the most frequently asked questions (by definition) and there's no need for staff to keep answering them over and over when it's already been answered in the Help area and the FAQ pages.

So, to recap, from any page of the site, click the "contact us" link, click the link to here, and click the link for the form right there in plain view on the main page, right hand sidebar.

Yes, it takes three click instead of one, but if they put the form right there on the site, people might not know the question is already answered on FAQ pages or know that other users on this board can answer them more quickly (there's usually a wait for Help Desk reply of days to weeks, even longer sometimes. There are 110 Million unique user visits per month...imagine if even one percent of them asked a question on the form...there'd be a waiting line of many months (with new message still coming in constantly.

You'll usually get answers in minutes to up to a day or two here, instead.

From any page of site, scroll to the bottom and you should be seeing:

Gotta admit, it's pretty ballsy to go with calling names again and then ask for Help again.  Note that I said ballsy and not intelligent (of course now I'll probably have to draw a picture and explain "ballsy" to you...).

Once again, those links take me back to this forum.  The "Get Satisfaction" forum.  You still didn't answer my question.

How do you get to this page http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/contact_form?subject=GS%20fallback

FROM this page
http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/contact ?

or this page
http://www.imdb.com/?ref_=nv_home ?

Jesus man, I can't believe you can't give me a straight answer and instead insist on giving me the runaround back to this forum!

Can't you answer a simple question?  I even put it in bold so you won't miss it

Gotta admit, it's pretty ballsy to go with calling names again and then ask for Help again.  Note that I said ballsy and not intelligent (of course now I'll probably have to draw a picture and explain "ballsy" to you...).
Well I don't have anything to lose here so who cares...  You want to ban me for attitude, go ahead.

It looks I'll just have to look somewhere else since this so-called forum insists on self-promoting itself and the actual imdb help desk couldn't be bothered and is hiding behind it.

Better yet, why don't you get somebody else who can answer mt question since I just spelled it out to you what I'm looking for and you're too dense to answer it correctly.

Yes.  That's what I said they do.

Once here, you should see, on the main page, options to:

1) Post a message and users and staff can participate

2) Send a message directly to staff via this form..  See the link at the end of:

I didn't suggest you go use those other links that appear all throughout the site but walked you through getting to this form..  I illustrated how they lead here to give you two choices.  Post or send a message on this form..  You've clearly misunderstood plain English answers even with pictures included or perhaps this form is not working for you (it works for everyone else). I just checked this form and it certainly works for me  I don't know what more can be done.  Perhaps, if this form I've recommended many, many times now, does not work for you, maybe you should either post your question on this board or just skip it completely.
