i think the voting system works linearly which may be giving poor results. i think i will be better if it can give some weight to the votes according to voters past genre search tendency or the voters watched movies. in my opinion, a sci- fi fan may give lower score to a drama movie while a drama fan may not.

Hi Metin Gemici,

Please note: I am another user, not a staff member. The following are my opinions and do not represent IMDb's official position on this matter.

I find your idea interesting. However, it may not be practical to implement.

The first problem is that IMDb's rating scale of 1 to 10 is effectively categorical rather than a true scale. A rating of 10 should not be interpreted as twice as good as a rating of 5, nor should a rating of 5 be interpreted as five times as good as a rating of 1.

How people use IMDb's rating scale of 1 to 10 is extremely subjective. I've seen many interpretations of what 1 to 10 means. I've seen evidence that some people vote 10 for films they like and 1 for films they dislike. In contrast there have been repeated requests to have a 20 point or 100 point scale. Others have published on their profile page specific standards on how they rate films.

The underlying groups of people are not as simple as fans of one genre versus another.

Finally, adjusting ratings to account for group norms would further obscure how the overall rating was obtained.
