Message Board History privacy

I feel that an IMDB user's Message Board History (the one showing which Message Boards/Threads the user has posted on) should not be visible to other users. Or at least there should be an option to make it private.

The reason I am suggesting this is that it gives away too much information to the wrong people like stalkers, bullies and trolls. Once any user happens to disagree with one of these people, they then access the user's MB History and start harassing the user on every board that he/she has posted on.

That could also be used by trolls to hide what they are doing.

If you want to choose who sees your comments you should send a PM. Otherwise a public forum means comments are to be seen by all.

If a user is, for example, flooding boards or spamming, and I suspect that's what they're doing, I might check his/her history to verify before reporting the abuse. If it's hidden, no report is made and the abuse continues.

If someone does that to you, report abuse and put him/her on ignore. People won't "bully" you if you act as if they don't exist.

I agree with the original poster (OP). A person's privacy is important, especially in the world of today when cyber bullying and identity theft are rampant.

Even though "bluesmanSF" makes a valid point but I feel that the pros of having a "Private" Message Board History, clearly outweigh the cons. Even with the current settings where the hsitory is visible to the public, trolling, spamming and MB flooding hasn't been eliminated. It still continues and if you report such users and their accounts get shut down, they just open a enw one and continue. So a public message board history really isn't the solution.

Compromising a user's privacy just so that one can confirm if a user is a spammer is like making an internet user's browsing history public just in the hopes of catching someone downloading a song illegally.

Except that IMDb's boards are "public". If you don't want your comments to be public, don't post them on a public forum. There is no "privacy" on a public forum. The only "privacy" this. Site affords you is the PM system. Otherwise, don't expect privacy here. None is advertised or expected.

The roots of IMDb are from the USENET group rec.arts.movies. The IMDb board system parallels USENET, except IMDb expires posts after three or four months and a user can easily delete a post. The culture for USENET and the IMDb boards have always been that posts are public. It is unlikely that the IMDb founder and CEO, Col Needham, will change that fundamental policy.

I noticed that someone's privacy is being violated, and that the information is being shared with other aggressive trolls.  This is frightening -- what about the person's safety?  They seem entirely vulnerable to a very nasty bully/stalker:

And now another aggressive bully/stalker has become involved:

What can this person do?

Please advise.
