This difference is intended between the two platforms. The desktop version of the Connections page will not display the poster image for each title:
whereas they are displayed on the IMDb app version of the same page:
However, we definitely appreciate this feedback! IMDb welcomes all feedback aimed at improving its features and usability across all platforms. I'll change this post to an "Idea" type, where the feedback can be seen by other IMDb staff and users for consideration for future updates.

We do currently display the series level image, as not all episodes have a specific image uploaded and people typically identify the series poster more easily than an image from the specific episode.
I am adjusting this topic to an Idea, so other users can weigh in with their opinion.

No, we have not made this change to the IMDb app in the last year.
