When I look at the top 250, with its many undeniably great films, it nonetheless seems to be heavily skewed to the tastes of a male audience.  I'm going out on a limb and imagining that most heavy users of IMDB.com are male, and perhaps the weightings could be adjusted so the female opinion may carry somewhat more weight?

Hi Ashley Lambert-Maberly,

The demographics for IMDb ratings skews heavily towards Males for many of IMDb's Top 250. You can see this by looking at the ratings page for any film. Here is the link for:
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) > User ratings
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/ratings?ref_=tt_ov_rt

The number of voters for each demographic is easier to see in tabular form.
