I wish that IMDb would try again to design a music database.

I'd add all the info from my thousands of CD's.

Problem is, it's tough and time consuming, and fewer folks will be able to add info as downloading takes over (no liner notes or credits to go by). But that would, I'd guess, mean more folks will be looking for the info too!

They'd probably be able to sell the use of the database to be used by Cd creating software and cell phones that would tag and display the data. Lyrics should be included as apps are starting to display that info (though I mostly just see "no lyrics available" at this point.

Thing is, there are a lot of music databases out there, like Discogs:

http://www.discogs.com

And many more:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...

The beauty of IMDB was that it was there right from the early days of the Web, so there was nothing else like it and it was able to build momentum until it was a unique and unchallenged resource.

Amazon would be better off buying one of the current music databases and integrating that into their family of sites (after all IMDB has a lot of soundtrack information, that could be linked to such a site)/ However, they did have Soundunwound, described as an IMDb for music:

http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles...

But it has just closed down:

So, it appears they don't want such a thing, or they've got another plan. They do need something like this though.

A good start is that a whole lot of the music artists are already listed and can be easily linked, making adding easier than starting fresh. But, then, the soundtracks area is not a strong one for IMDb. There's lots of ups and downs for this idea, though I'd probably contribute to it heavily. I am sure some of the other contributors are probably music buffs too.

Yeah, it'd be interesting to have the soundtracks linked to a music database, as you might wonder what else the artist has done and/or what albums the song has appeared on. Clearly Amazon would be interested if there were links that allowed people to grab an MP3 of the track or soundtrack too (the way YouTube does it is good and must really help drive MP3 sales). At the moment you have to break out of IMDB and start Googling (perhaps opening up a few tabs to get the information you want) - I know I've done this a few times whilst watching a film and bought the MP3. So there is a lot of potential to keep this all in the Amazon family and make it a lot easier for people, which will help shift units. I also want similar links from books that have been adapted into films.

I'd quite happily contributed ASINs/ISBNs if IMDB wanted to do this.

If you go to a composer's IMDb page (Ennio Morricone for example) you'll be able to see all the titles they worked on.

For the most part you can also see in which titles a particular artist's songs have been heard (for example, Buddy Holly), though I expect that's going to be a bit lessĀ  reliable as those credits are more complicated to submit to the IMDb.
