My account is "blocked"?

The other week I was on IMDb, as I tend to be almost daily, and then as I went to another page I was logged out.  I could not log back in again and when I try to get password reminder it say it had been blocked?

Why would that happen?  I use IMDB to rate films and TV shows for my own sake so I know later if I may want to watch them again (or not) -- I don't post on the boards even, so why would that happen?  It makes no sense.

I have sent in a message via their form, last week, but nothing so far, not even confirmation that they have received anything.  It is frustrating, I have been with IMDb since 2006 and never done anything wrong.

Other users probably cannot help you. Staff doesn't discuss accounts or account status here. They, on the main page of this forum, ask us to contact them directly via the Help Desk. As you've already done so, there's not much else to be done here. You'll likely just have to wait for them to get to you.

All right, thank you for the reply, bluesman.  (:

It is just frustrating and confusing to not hear anything for so long, all this just came out of the blue.  ):

(Especially since all I can do is use the default form as I can't log in to use the help desk)

And a reply, via email.  Standard form letter, blurbing about posting guidelines.  Too bad I never posted anything on any message board, yet this would suggest I was blocked because of that?

The only thing of use was "blocked accounts can't be undone", so, well, that's it then, no reason and no explanation.   Wow.  I guess whoever blocked me came to work having a bad day, what else could it be?

I am really disappointed in you, IMDb.  Just wow.

Hello there.

I found this board after searching Google. I wanted to log into my IMDB account today, and was surprised to see that my account was blocked. Like you, I never wrote messages/reviews. I just rated movies that I watched, and browsed. Simple stuff. Never got into a fight/flame with anyone.

Don't really know how to react to this...

Sorry to hear you too have fallen victim to their ways, it sucks.  No warning and no chance to even learn why.  I've turned elsewhere for my film and TV show information, since I evidently don't even deserve an explanation or a chance to contest whatever it was.  I sure can't recommend that place to anyone now.

Just a wild guess, but accounts authenticated with the same ID all getblocked if one gets blocked. So, if you have multiple accounts, or if you used the same cell phone or cc number as someone else, and they got reported for being abusive, all connected accounts get blocked. It could happen that a recycled cell phone number, with the previous owner being blocked, could result in a subsequent owner being blocked. As I say, just a guess.

I had just one account, since 2006, and know for a fact I didn't/don't share any cell phone number or CC with anyone.  My guess would be I got blocked instead of someone else, a typo, someone having a bad day, or whatever.  I will never know beyond that fact that a block isn't reversible.  Great system there, really great.

Every time I've changed phone numbers, I've started getting calls intended for the previous owner of the number.  I think phone numbers are more quickly recycled than every before.  So, while a long shot, I still think it's a viable theory that being "blocked" could be because the previous owner of a number got blocked.

I've had my cell number for years, never had someone call it wrongly -- unlike my landline -- and, if it matters, I'm not in US.

It is all moot now anyway since it's irrevocable, but I sure ain't happy with them.  They clearly need to look over their routines, if they have any, and get a new system in place.

I see.  I am curious, though, about the "blocked" message.  Usually when authentication is removed, you're simply asked to authenticate when using features requiring authentication.  You might post a screen shot of the message and see if staff can comment.  Though I've heard, hundreds of times, of users having authentication revoked, I don't recall mention of a message saying they were blocked.  I wonder if it's something different...maybe a glitch of some type.

Good luck!

I have no idea, all I can see is "this account has been blocked".  As above, when I finally got an answer  -- starting of with a parable with causing a disturbance at a restaurant, which is weird since all I ever did was to read the menu (maybe that was the problem?) -- all I leart from it was that it cannot be undone, so, yeah, thank you and good bye, basically, save the thank you and good bye...

And glitch or not, I guess I'm thrown out.  Feels wholly unfair but I can't contest it anywhere and, yeah, irrevocable...

Thanks for taking time to talk with me, though.  If nothing else it let me vent my frustration.

Well that's worth something, I guess ;)

You're welcome!

The irreversible part seems a little ridiculous. Did you try to reply to the form reply they sent back to you? When I submit questions through the help desk, I always get a boilerplate response, like they're working off a script. If the reply doesn't answer my question, then I send my own reply with a more pointed question. That can go on for three to four exchanges until I feel I've been answered. This might be a different situation, but it's worth a shot.

@bluesmanSF -- Indeed.  (;

@layle1 -- Well, I quote from the email;  "The decision to block an account is final and cannot be undone."  So, it is final.  Just like that, I am out.  I had no chance to fight it or even get an explanation (the standard email rambles about posting and stuff, something I never did, ever).  Leave a bitter taste, it does.

Guess I'm done here, but thanks to those at least replying, got more out of you fellows than I did the official "service"...  Hopefully none of you will end up being tossed out without a word.

Thanks.

Can only hope they look over and change their approach to these things, for the sake of future users.

Hello.

Just recieved a reply from Help desk, and it seems my account has been unblocked. The reply said something like: "thank you for reporting, please try logging in now". And it worked.

Figured it was a glitch or error....I'd never heard of that before...hang in there, SL....probably the same error...

Maybe give a link to your profile so staff here can expedite.

I hope you're right, bluesman.  I mean, I was browsing IMDb,  tried to rate a recently viewed film and then, poof, logged out and unable to log in?  Makes no sense to me.

Well, three months later, on a whim I try logging in, haven't been there since.

And now I can log in.  Not a word from anyone or anything, but as long as I got my rating history I suppose I should be happy.

Dang it, though, bizarre stuff.  |:  Maybe someone figured out they made a mistake and silently fixed it.  d:  Just wish they'd told me.  Oh well.
