Need help identifying a movie

The movie's focus was on a family. Father, mother, daughter in late teens/early 20s, son 11 or 12.  Daughter goes on ski trip with boyfriend, returns early because she fell and broke her arm.  Not long after, we see son in a movie theatre, presumably waiting for the feature to start, and watching a short film that was played before the main one.  This short film was one of those Prohibition-era type scenarios dramatizing the "dangers" of alcohol, by depicting a family man travelling on a train, where he met two other men who talked him into sharing a drink with them.  The family man is quickly overcome, becomes an alcoholic himself, losing job, family, etc., and we see the boy watching, wide eyed, taking in the whole story.  Cut to (presumably) a day or two later, and the boy is in school, being questioned by his teacher as to why he didn't turn in a homework assignment.  The boy spins a rather imaginative excuse, using the story from that short film he saw as the basis, casting his father as the formerly-innocent-man-turned-abusive-drunkard.  This is apparently a small town, so the teacher already knew about the boy's older sister having sustained a broken arm; the boy's version of events makes this injury the result of his father's supposed drunken rampage.   This all leads to a rather interesting scene when the teacher runs into the father at the local 5 & 10, and begins to take him to task for his alleged indiscretions and neglect of his family.  Poor innocent father of course has no idea what teacher is talking about....  That's as much as I can recall of the film.  Hope it's enough to ring a bell for someone out there....

I think i remember something like that. Older movie set in winter. the boyfriend comes in and goes off on the father about drinking. He said he even smells it and grabs a bottle and i think he throws it in the fire place but the girl is saying something like that rubbing alcohol for my leg. (I thought it was her leg that broke) and i think the son ended up breaking his at the end playing in the snow or climbing over a wall. I just spent two hrs looking and i cant find it also. Now its driving me nuts

Melissa Milner, now that I read your post, that comes back to me. It's very likely we're talking about the same film. Thanks for posting this. Now at least I know someone besides me remembers this movie. My late SO had a HUGE bunch of old movies on VHS/DVD and I have the feeling it was one of these, I just can't remember which one. My SO is now deceased :( and even if that weren't so, it wouldn't help. I had actually asked him about this some years ago, but he did not remember the sequence I described in my original post (the short film, the boy, etc.) Hopefully someone out there will be able to put the pieces together.
