New version of IMDb advanced title search launched

  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
We are pleased to launch a new version of the IMDb advanced title search today.  At the moment we have the same interface available at http://www.imdb.com/search/title with new software powering the results. In the long term we will be providing new, more powerful search options.

The new software is more up-to-date and more flexible than the old software.  Our aim is to make the search results backwards compatible, so in theory, the only differences between the old and new search results should be an improved layout and more timely results. However, with millions of bookmarks and entry points to the new search, it was not possible to cover every combination in testing ahead of the launch, sorry.

We have already seen reports of some issues and we are working on these now.  This thread will be used to gather all feedback and bug reports.

Please let us know here if you see anything unusual with the advance search results, thanks.

Try this link instead:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?languages=en&sort=year&title_type=feature,tv_movie,tv_serie...

I removed:
&start=29751

The start attribute appears to be no longer supported.

The option to browse titles for any given year by release date is up and running again.
However, it won't allow you to browse any further than the first 200 pages (or 10,000 titles).  After that, a "webpage doesn't exist" message comes up.

I've confirmed the problem.

Most Popular Titles Released 2016-01-01 Or Later

This works:
9,951 to 10,000 of 170,607 titles
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?release_date=2016,&view=simple&page=200&ref_=adv_nxt

This returns a 404 (page not found) error.

Glad to know it's not just me.  However, I wish the problem would get fixed soon.  It's been a week now, and there's been no change.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled See All Filters option does not work.

I could create detailed lists via using see all filters option. But it does not work anymore.
For Example I could create "Most Voted Feature Films Not In Your "ls058054547" List, Released 2016-01-01 Or Later With At Least 100 Votes and User Rating Between 7.0 and 10.0"
Why this feature disabled?

Let's build this up to see where the problem occurs:

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled New advanced title search. Main problem persists..

Thanks for taking out the writers of the over-detailed search results. That's an improvement. But the main problem since the new advanced title search started persists: when we search for movies in IMDb rating order the movies with the same rating are shown in popularity order. I want to know which 7.0 movie is closer to 7.1 and which is closer to 6.9. There is a great difference. If I look for movies in rating order I want to see all results in rating order. If I care about popularity I would search for the most popular movies. Thanks and sorry for my english.

When I search for most popular movies by genre, and sorting from the old ones to the new ones, there's a limit until page 200, and I need to go further to reach these days, that didn't happen before.

Would you PLEASE add an option to exclude genres from search.

EDIT: I must add, before you launched this new system, in the old system it was possible to exclude genres from the address bar, but even that isn't working anymore.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Oscars and the new advanced title search. Another bug..

Besides not showing the special achievement winners anymore, there is another Oscars bug in the new advanced search system: when we look for Oscar-nominated movies, the results don't show the movies that won all the Oscars for which they were nominated anymore. Ex.: if a movie was nominated for only one Oscar and it won, it won't appear in the results for Oscar-nominated movies. C'mon, when we look for Oscar-nominated movies we want results that show both Oscar-winners and Oscar-nominated movies, not only the movies that lost at least one Oscar. To understand even better what I'm saying, try search for the Oscar-winners and Oscar-nominated movies released in the year 1963. The italian movie Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Ieri, oggi, domani), which won the only Oscar for which it was nominated, will appear only in the Oscar-winner list. C'mon, to win an Oscar, first a movie must be nominated. And when I look for Oscar-nominated movies, that's exactly what I want: a list of all the Oscar nominated movies (including the 100% winners), not a list of movies that lost at least one Oscar. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which was nominated for 11 Oscars (almost a record), don't appear in the Oscar-nominated search results anymore, only because it won all of them. It doesn't make any sense. Thanks and sorry for my english.

Titles are being displayed in foreign languages even when "Title display country" and "Title display language " are  set to United Kingdom and English respectively in "Site Preferences".

The akas site doesn't work either. Foreign titles are still displayed.

From what I can tell, the IMDb technical staff wrote the query code for the new Advanced Title Search to only allows searches that can be directly created via the form. As such many of the tricks (or link hacks) that many of us have used over the years no longer work.

The exclamation point (also known as bang) "!" is the not operator for database searches in SQL (Structured Query Language). In effect our link hacks passed on that operator to the underlying query with the older version of the Advanced Search. The new version of the Advanced Search ignores these link hacks.

The bang still exists for the Exclude option under lists.

For example:

Most Popular Titles Not In Your "ls071894610" List
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?lists=!ls071894610

As an aside, the list (http://www.imdb.com/list/ls071894610/) is an empty title list. The above search returns all of the current titles in IMDb. In the older version of Advanced Search, the title of the search would have been:
Most Popular Titles Not In Your "Empty Title List" List

Since I am not an IMDb staff member, what I've written above is an educated guess. A member of the IMDb technical staff or Col Needham would have to confirm or clarify what I have written. It would be very helpful if the IMDb technical staff would state whether they intend to update the Advanced Title Search form to support these kind of not queries and/or allow for some of the link hacks in the future.

Hi everyone. Great news!!!

I like the new version. Mainly because of the solving of this (https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/list_of_apache_language_films_what_went_wrong) problem.

Does anyone know if this (https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/advanced_search_by_several_countries_or_rather_than_and) problem will also be "fixed" sooner or later?

In the past, it was possible to exclude certain genres from searches by putting a ! in front of the category, for example. "!title_type=tv_series,tv_episode,game" This is not working anymore

Can you reinclude this feature please?

George,

Please click on these slightly different searches:*
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?lists=!watchlist,!ls077857628,!ls076883120,!ls079351540,!ls03890970...

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?lists=!watchlist,!ls077857628,!ls076883120,!ls079351540,!ls03890970...

If one or both of these work, then it is likely your browser is caching (keeping
an old copy of) the results.

I recommend that if these links do not produce a 500 error that you clear your browser history back to the time you first noticed the error.

* Note: I changed akas to www in the first link and also deleted video in the second.

George,

I am a long time user, not an IMDb staff member.

Here are a few questions that might help identify the root cause of the problem:

When you get the 500 error, is there a link to report the 500 error?
If so, please click on the link, which should include an email address, an email the result to that email address.

What type of device are you user: PC, laptop, tablet, smart phone or other?

What operating system are you using? Windows (XP, 7, 8 or 10), OSX, or other?

What web browser are you using? Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera or other?

Are you behind a corporate firewall?

When did you start getting the 500 error?

Are you getting the 500 error for all advanced title searches or just for some?

When are you getting the 500 errors: when you are logged in, logged out or all of the time?

If you have access to someone else's computer, do you still get the 500 error on that computer?

Hmm, it works for me too.

Delete your browser's cache and cookies. Try different browsers.

Maybe clearing the DNS cache might help. Type ipconfig /flushdns  in Run or CMD.

Dan, thank you for your help anyway, I understand you are not a staff member. About the report option, yes there is but I can't enter the Outlook server.
So I use a laptop, Windows 7, Google Chrome, no corporate firewall.
I started getting the 500 error just when the new version of advanced title search launched.
When I log out, the search works fine. But when I log in, all the same 500 error.
I also tried that on Internet Explorer, with same results.
Later on, I'II check on another computer.

George,

Since you've seen those errors only while you're logged-in, I wonder if there may be a technical problem involving your Watchlist specifically.

As a test, try removing "!watchlist," from the search URL.  If the search then completes without errors, this would seem to indicate that the errors somehow relate to the use of your Watchlist in a search parameter.  In that case, IMDb should be able to investigate to find the cause.

The link is working for us as the !watchlist refers to our watchlist and not to George's. I think Nobody is correct that the problem is George's Watchlist and removing the parameter from the link seems like a good idea and it will probably work that way. I had problems with my watchlist once after I deleted a whole lot of titles from it. There also may be a mix-up with the watchlist's index, Have you added any titles recently to your watchlist that may cause a problem there? Try to delete them and re-add them. Maybe there was a problem in saving them properly. Another reason I would think off may be adult tiles. I know there can be problems to make lists visible when they include pornography, but I am not sure if search results are affected to. I just tried to access your watchlist and saw that it's not possible to do so for everybody other than yourself, probably because you made it private. It's impossible to find the reason without seeing your watchlist, but I believe just like Nobody that the problem is located there.

Hi, there. So, I came down to the same conclusion my self. The problem is in my watchlist. When I perform the search without the watchlist, there's no error.
Well, there are no adult titles in my watchlist, but I suspect what it may be wrong. There are two titles, in the watchlist, that are not available anymore (merged or deleted, can't tell). It's not possible to remove these titles from the watchlist. When I try to edit the list, these 2 titles are not selectable (see screenshot). Any ideas?

The IMDb technical staff should be monitoring this thread, so they may offer some advice.

Can you edit the list and save it? If they are not displayed in edit mode, then they may simply disappear this way.  My guess is that it still may have to do with the index numbers that two numbers are basically missing now somewhere in the list. What is the number of the last title when you edit your watchlist? 9921 or 9923 or 9925? If you know what these two titles were or even better when you added them and where these missing numbers are, you can check for yourself for example for number 422 missing between 421 and 423. But if this was the case, I believe you also wouldn't be able to add titles or save your watchlist without an error message. I see you have almost 10k titles in your watchlist, so it's probably impossible for you to identify these two titles. imdb staff may be able to help hopefully.

These titles have been for a while in the list, I've edited it tens of times. Not possible to identify the 2 titles. Also, I noticed that I can perform advanced searches with different parameters, including the watchlist, and it works. So, I guess something is wrong with the specific search.

But to reiterate the post from He He above:
The akas site doesn't work,  movie titles are still translated to foreign languages based on IP address / location. I see all titles in German, also on akas.imdb.com, which is quite annoying. I hope the imdb developers know about this bug!

It seems internal. When I go to http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=100&genres=sci_fi&sort=alpha,asc&title_type=featu... and click on "next Page", the error message comes as well.

You could try a workaround like displaying these results in compact view and 250 titles per page if that works perhaps.

Never mind. I tried it with compact view and the last page displayed is http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&genres=sci_fi&sort=alpha,asc&title_type=featu... which probably means that at this point it is not possible to display more than the first 10,000 results. I am not sure if it was possible before the search update.

Hi Isabella saide,

Thank you for the additional information.

Although you did not do an Advanced Title search, I suspect that IMDb's update to the Advance Title search has affected similar searches such as the one for films for the country of France.

Would you provide a link to the search so that the IMDb Technical Staff can replicate the problem.

Another user, Steve Michaud, reported the 404 (page not found) error 2 weeks ago. He also encounters the error at 10,000 titles. I was able to replicate and verify the problem in his case.

Can anyone tell me where did this layout disappeared?

When did that happened? I'm using "Show reference view (old title/name page layout)", this new layout is very confusing to me, is there some option to view old layout?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't notice this thread.

New version of advanced title search is very frustrating to look. There is too much information about title, ratings and number of votes fonts are very small, i have trouble reading them. Why make things complicated if they can be simple?

Previous version was million times better and i'm hoping you will keep it or give us the option too choose between old and new version, just like reference view format.

Thanks.

I agree totally.  This new version has wrecked a little movie tracking hobby I've been running every week for the last few years. Please give us access to the old interface that didn't show images in the compact view and enabled us to see the number of votes as well without having to drive into the rating.
