I have found the following variations in the filming locations listings. I would like to correct them so they are all the same, but would like input on what the best version is:

Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France

Cathédrale Notre-Dame, Paris, France

Notre-Dame de Paris, Paris, France

Nôtre-Dame, Paris, France

Notre Dame, Paris 1, Paris, France

Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris, Paris 4, Paris, France

Cathedral de Notre Dame, Île de la Cité, Paris 4, Paris, France

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, Ile de la Cité, Paris 4, Paris, France

Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris 6, Place du Parvis, Paris 4, Paris, France

Notre Dame de Paris, 6 Parvis Notre-Dame, Place Jean-Paul II, 75004 Paris, France

Eglise de Notre Dame, Paris 4, Paris, France

Cathedral Close, Notre Dame Cathedral, Île de las Cité, Paris 4, Paris, France

I'd prefer to include "Paris 4" as these names for arrondissements seem to be common in the existing locations for Paris.

Not an expert nor speaking French, but should it be the official name in French + Paris, France?

Hi,

I do not know how other major cathedrals as Saint-Paul in London or Saint-Patrick in NY are processed in IMDb (too difficult to retrieve), but, as a Parisian, I advise to drop any useless reference to the "arrondissement"/district (4), or "île de la cité".
I would favor "Cathédrale Notre-Dame, Paris, France"

Hi Peter -

When listing Filming Locations we prefer the simple version verses elaborate, detailed locations.  So for the "Notre Dame" we would prefer a simple and widely recognizable listing such as:

"Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France"

Should Giza, Giza Plateau and Giza, Egypt be corrected to just Giza, Egypt?

But in English language, even when the ”official” name is in French?

The complete name in french is "Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris"

I don't know if that is helping.

Scrolling down the page,
though, they use a few different English names, but mostly:

Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral

My point was that Michelle’s recommendation was ”Notre Dame Cathedral”, which is English.

So question is that is English a preferred way to list companies/places/offices/etc? Or is it that a certain, let’s say universally known locations are listed in English?

I have personally listed these in their original language, since there are a lot of places/offices/companies/etc in the world that doesn’t really have official English names/translations (Notre Dame not obviously included).

It's a fair point. I already submitted edits with the version Michelle suggested, but if they are accepted it would at least be much easier to submit an edit to the location if another spelling if preferred.

The guidelines say, "Major cities and all country names are in English; smaller cities and locations can be listed in their native language."

So locations *can* be in the native language. But I think I was once told to use the English name if one existed (I think this was about the name of an airport). And that does make sense to me since most IMDb users would probably look for an English name.

I was also considering making edits to the listings for the Eiffel Tower, which also has several variations. I would prefer to use the English name.

Most of my edits have been rejected. I wonder what verification they are looking for.

Thanks for the efforts, but the rejected edits have still not been made on the site.

Example:

I can resubmit the edits later on.

Oh, some of the edits seem to be live now, but perhaps the locations were only changed on some titles, not on all affected titles.

I used the checkbox "This correction applies to the location not just this title" where applicable, of course. Maybe this isn't working?

Hi Peter -

Unfortunately, this may have been an over-site by our editors when processing your submissions. If you can re-call, you can post the incorrect location names here and I will be happy to take a look and manually correct them.

I think it would be better to make sure that such corrections are processed in general. I have made some new edits as a test and will start a new thread for the general issue.
