Offer a link to Amazon from songs/soundtracks

This came up on a previously on a debate about a music database:

https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topi...

It would be very handy to have an easy way to buy MP3s of songs (or CDs/MP3s of a whole soundtrack) by following a link from IMDB's soundtrack listings. At the moment you'd have to open up Amazon or iTunes or some kind of illegal download site in another tab and go digging for the right song.

Unfortunately, Amazon don't currently own a music database (although they have bought one and but then eventually shut it down), so there is no easy way to link soundtracks to a site in the Amazon Family, but it'd be a lot of hassle to start a music database. However, it'd be easy enough to bring together the information for a specific song in the same place and you could then offer an Amazon link from there or from the main soundtrack page, if there is one available to buy. You currently do this for films and it wouldn't take too much work to add in Amazon links in such a way - it'd be very handy for users and would help drive sales at Amazon (both increasing the number of sales of the song overall and cutting out competitors).

I'm all for it. And not just because I buy music from Amazon ridiculously often.

I spend a good deal of time toggling between other sites and Amazon so I'm all for the database of music here, but adding links where something is listed here, directly to the place to buy is such an easy, slap-the-forehead, why didn't we do this sooner, idea!

I am rather surprised that IMDb does not currently provide a link to songs and sound tracks on Amazon.

For instance, let's say I wanted to buy a CD or MP3 of Duettino - Sull'aria from opera "Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro)" from The Shawshank Redemption (1994). I currently need to go to the The Soundtracks page [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/s... ] and paste the name of the song into Amazon.com.

Fortunately in this case I was able to find the song Duettino - Sull'aria on Amazon.com. However, if I did not find this quickly, I would be inclined to either buy it from another vendor or decide not to buy it.

On a related note, since many films are based on books, it would be helpful to have a direct link to the book on Amazon.com in such cases.

FYI: I posted a link to this thread to Amazon's Get Satisfaction site:

I'm working on just such a suggestion right now - made easier by Amazon owning 1.4 book databases which themselves link to Amazon and other sources (Audible or sites you can get PD books from for free).

There is one slight complication - cover versions mean it can be a bit tricky to automatically generate links to Amazon (although title and artist should usually do the trick, except where there is a different remixes) so it might be an idea to offer an option that allows you to enter the relevant ASIN - as I said on the other thread, I know I'd be happy to enter information for films I'm interested in (the world needs more and easier access to the Judgement Night soundtrack ;) ).

We actually used to link to soundtrack CDs from the soundtrack section a long time ago (this was before Amazon had MP3/digital music available). I think this was discontinued partly because of the difficulty to generate and keep these links updated but mostly because of the very frequent discrepancy between the songs featured in a film and the actual songs included in the soundtrack album.

I agree that it would be cool to have songs from soundtrack listings linked to their MP3 counterparts -- but solving the problem of identifying and linking the titles so the corresponding product listings is not trivial and would require a substantial amount of work. I'm going to mark this as 'under consideration' but with the caveat that even if we decide to move forward with this, it would probably be a long term project (i.e. something that would not be implemented in the near or even not-so-near future).

It had a nice warning notation that soundtracks can differ from the music in the film back then...but of course, who reads those :( Other than me, I guess...

Thanks for the reply.

The other solution would be to have a word with Amazon and see what there plans are for Soundunwound as they have a music database (that is no longer live) which might make life simpler for IMDB as you could link songs to them and then they'd do all the hard work figuring which was the right song.

Indeed. That is my main concern. However, it should be fixable.

You could layer in a general Amazon search for song title/artist, which would tend to cover most bases. You could also provide the ability to edit the entry and add in a specific identifier (ASIN?) that would pinpoint the correct song, which would allow people to focus any effort needed to additions by hand. This'd mean you can generate a lot of the right links quickly and we can personally intervene to fix the small around of cases when this doesn't work. After all, if there are problems, then people are going to be posting it here, so we should know what needs work.
