This problem arose just a couple of days ago, so I guess you've done some background changes:

I've selected the "Show reference view (old title/name page layout)" option from my profile as I prefer the old style layout. However, if I do not access IMDb for some time the layout switches to new style but I'm still shown as logged on.

When I enter my account/profile page, I'm not asked for any crendetials so clearly my login is remembered. After doing this step, layout switches back to the old style as expected (until some time passes again).

I've tried to logout and login again without any luck; thus I expect this to be just some technical quirk that wasn't caught at the testing dept.

Yes, same issue here. "Reference view" doesn't always work anymore, it's very annoying.

The "reference view" feature got broken a couple days ago.

Hello, I really do not like the default movie page design so I display the site using the "reference view (old title/name page layout)" feature.

This option is located at "Site Preferences" > "General" > "Show reference view".

While it has worked beautifully for years, since a couple days ago the feature doesn't work correctly anymore. More often than not, it will display movie pages using the "default design".

When that happens, refreshing the page seems to work:
/reference is then added at the end of the URL and the display is the expected reference one.
But of course it's very annoying to have to refresh pages all the time to have the feature working correctly :(

Bug tested and recreated on both Internet Explorer 8 and Google Chrome, after completely cleaning the cache and cookies on both browsers.
Please report the bug to the IMDB website designer!
As I said, the option started being unreliable a couple ago (3-4 days at most)..
Thank you very much for your support.

Since the redesign I preferred the old title/name page layout and was glad that IMDB provided me with the possibility to change that in my site preferences. However, since a couple of days, I have to go to my site preferences daily, click on update (the box is still checked, that has not changed), and only then I am able to view the title or name in the old lay out. It's very annoying to have to do that every day. Does this problem occur with more IMDB users? What can be done to fix this? (FYI: I have not deleted cookies or anything). Thanks in advance!

Thanks for reporting this. Just to clarify what you are experiencing so we can investigate the problem, which of these two scenarios are you experiencing?

1) You have the 'show reference view' preference set (at https://secure.imdb.com/register-imdb... )but you are not being redirected to the /reference version of a title page - i.e. when you look up a film, e.g. Aliens (1986) and click on the title to go to the film's page, do you end
up here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/

or here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/r...

2) Or are you saying that you have checked the box next to 'Show reference view' but that it has been unchecked automatically without your intervention?

3) Or something else?

thanks

Now, if I restart my browser (Firefox 19.0, pretty much out of the box configuration), I'm currently able to reproduce the following. (Maybe some short lived cookies get crumbled during the restart cycle).

1) When I open the link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/ for the first time, I do neither see the old reference view nor get redirected to the http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/r....

However, I'm still shown as logged on (username displayed at the upper right corner; no logins required etc.).

2) If I reload the page, I get properly redirected to the http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/r... and from now on everything works as expected (for any title I open regardless of the URL type [with or without the /reference part]).

Yes, I have checked the "Show reference view" box and it remains set all the times, so it does not get unchecked at any point.

Hope this helps to pinpoint the problem.

I can confirm the bug is scenario #1.

Even though I'm logged-in, and 'show reference view' is set, I'm just not being redirected automatically to /reference.

Can you please try logging out and logging in again? Even if you are already logged in, the above step will clear your cookie and re-create it, and will help us pinpoint the problem.

After you login again, please verify that the 'Show Reference View' box is still checked in your preferences. If not, check it and save. And then let us know you still experience the same problem (i.e. not being redirected to /reference pages).

Removed all the cookies (a good dozen) for the domain www.imdb.com but still the reference view bugs whenever I visit a title page for the first time after restarting my browser.

I must note that that when I login on a non-reference view page I get the good ole reference view as expected after a successful login. However, after restarting my browser it bugs again.

And yes, "Show Reference View" checkbox stays checked between the logins.

Edit:

Ok, took a quick look with Firebug. If the per session cookies are cleared, I get first a 200 OK response with the new look. As I do not get any Set-Cookies headers with that HTTP reply, I guess you set your session cookies elsewhere (as you seem to do) or by some JS fiddle.

Of course, if you trust on session cookies on switching the layout it's pretty much undoable as you don't have any at that point.

For the next queries I get the 302 Found (redirect via Location header to /reference) response, as expected. Seems that if I delete "cache" cookie (and only it) I'm never redirected to /reference but always get the 200 OK response.

Didn't look further, I guess this should lead you to pretty much to the conclusion what is going wrong behind the curtains. I think this should at least rule out any stupid browser mishaps etc.

This new method is clearly not working as intended; isn't it possible to revert to the old way of doing things (without the /reference thing?)

Very annoying after 1 month!
Could imdb at least acknowledge the issue?

The have done - the thread is marked "acknowledged" and a member of staff has passed it onto technical staff.

Until it gets fixed I'm afraid the workaround is to turn off reference view in your site settings.

I think this fix caused another bug. The first half of the problem is that sometime ago I opted to use the olda main/title page and now I can't opt out. I did uncheck the "Show reference view" and saved my site preferencies but it had no effect. This has been like this for month, I learned to live with manually clicking main details on the sidebar for every title. But now it has gotten first. Now if a click on main details I get redirected back to combined view. I simply can't access the new main page. If I sign out, I can do it with no problems.

FYI, I sign in through my google account.

Might be worth starting a new problem thread and link back to this.
