on the show catfish they are able to take a photo and find out what person it belongs to. how is that done

I would imagine they use an Internet search engine to see if the image appears somewhere else. Like Google, select "images."

You might want to ask on the message board for that show. Only a few people will likely see your post here, which is more for questions/concerns with IMDb site. More folks who have seen the show will see your post on the show or movie's message boards.
