Hi everyone,

all Conversations authored by me on Get Satisfaction have been deleted, and apparently my IMDb account too, because it is inaccessible. The mails informing me about this issue say that Col Needham gave this reason: Troll.

Thanks to Peter and Dan, my ability to post anything on GS was restored. Intermittently, trying to do so resulted in a message that said, “Sorry! Your participation privileges were suspended by Community Managers for persistent abusive behavior: Troll.”

The only reason that might explain this issue is the recent suggestion of one specific poll. It was titled "IMDb - The Nail in the Coffin" and dealt with hypothetical changes to the site that might cause the voter to leave permanently. It was intended to be humorous and as far as I can see, not hate-inducing.

I don’t see the point of further suggesting polls without my old IMDb account. Neither do I feel very comfortable here when the ultimate possible punishment is exerted in such a way, without a chance to retrieve the losses. Maybe I’ll post something sporadically, the way bratface used to.

It’s a bummer, because pollmaking was fun, and there are such interesting, friendly, helpful, and creative people here. Thank you to all the poll board regulars.

The fact that you take this poll means that you are still loyal to IMDb,
after changes to the site that made many users unhappy.
Which hypothetical decision would most likely finally end your "relationship" with IMDb?

Question to ACT 1: if for any reason, one's account is deleted, do his reviews get deleted as well? I mean the 26 reviews that albstein wrote, where are they?

You could start a new thread and ask this

I do not know if reviews get deleted
Staff or Champions here can answer
(I do not do reviews )

Tried this - mixed up with lists and other off topics

alb,

I'm glad you were able to make this post.
There is no need to repeat my feelings, but I will at least say this again: you will truly be missed.

I didn’t saw the poll you made about IMDb, but I never read anything disturbing from you. So I’m very surprised about this. I can understand, poll making isn’t the same without your account. You will be missed, especially because there aren’t much poll makers from West Europe.

So sad to hear that, I don't know if it's possible, but I hope you can have your account back.

Alb,

What do we have if not our freedom of speech? Regardless, I know your intent with polls like that was always in good fun (what else can we do amidst the flurry of changes to everything...?) but you will truly be missed. I hope you can come back to polls someday, your ideas were always provoking with that perfect dose of Woody Allen comedic wit. Your no troll in my books... if that helps :)

Take care friend and never lose the love for movies.

I don't remember ever seeing anything "bad" or "insulting" from you. I will miss you and your contributions very much. Perhaps once you take a break you'll want to return after a while (happened to me) - I very much hope to see you back with us again. :(

This is a shame. A misunderstanment and a terrible way to deal with things, censoring instead of listening and attacking instead of talking, means the IMDb and the poll making community has lost a very valuable member.

The people that is here and that works every day to generate content and participates on the site should be respected or at least get the benefit of the doubt.

ElM, what do you think you will achieve by complaining about the polls all the time?

Nothing, you're right. I'm just letting the steam off. It doesn't make me feel better.

But just to let you know, I wasn't complaining in that particular post, only replying to the points regarding the polls. Sorry if it makes me sound like a whiner, can't help it.

I dedicated many years for this website, and it saddens me to realize that in some aspects, retrospectively, I kind of wasted my time... certainly not in the fun, friendly and enriching interactions I had with many users throughout the years, those are memories I will cherish, but all these recent updates had the "beginning of an end" feel... and some more recent changes were just the last stroke.

Maybe it's time for me to 'call it a day'...

Col. I have always appreciated you brought the poll back and I intend to be creating them and remaining part of this community. Indeed it was agreat day when they were back, and while the old system is fondly remembered, I have not many complaints with the new one.

I also think is great that you take the time to answer this thread and give an official response.

However, I would suggest thinking about the way users are perceiving the site. The feeling that IMDb no longer cares for them is increasong, not in this community, but in general, and I think it is specially worrysome when it comes to people that has been valuable and loyal members for many years.

This regretful incident unfortunately hit the poll community and costs us of one member or maybe more. We have lost other people in past months, but the feeling of IMDb neglecting its users goes, I think beyond this.

Hopefully it is indeed only a matter of perception, but it is something that should be solved, perception is an important part of every relation and that includes users with a web page or a company like IMDb or Amazon.

Exactly, Pencho. I think we all try to embrace changes as positively as possible, and the fact that many of us stayed on IMDb during all these years is a credit to our loyalty and our dedication. But the fact that many users left the ship, like Rafael M, Jalapeno, BoltBailt or TheSocialIntrovert could also be an alarming sign.

The thing is, as users, we all try to contribute in a way that enables us to leave a mark, or to make something with a modest but durable value (polls, reviews or data contribution). The recent changes or updates have undermined this 'durability' we're seeking, basically, any feature can be removed right now, since they removed the message boards, which was the core, the meat of the website.

I try to get these IMDb Top 250 badges, but there's a little voice in my head telling me "why do you care? for all you know, maybe these badges won't even exist in the next six months" IMDb is far from being an empty shell, there's still a lot to do... but you can tell things aren't the way they used to be, and it all depends on one's capability to embrace the changes.

I try but it's hard.

I am at a loss for words. I can understand not making the list a poll or even deleting the post, but to completely remove someone who has been a constant creator of insightful polls is just disheartening.

That's the thing. The decisions to make the changes to IMDb (occurring from early 2017 all the way up to the present time) did not come easily and probably hurt just as great of a portion of the people who deal with the internal side of the IMDb interface as the portion of people on who deal public face of the IMDb interface. So, it is not like the IMDb lead official representatives would appreciate being mocked (made fun of), so to speak, over something like that. You want to generally be careful about teasing about the continued success of any organization with whom that you're doing business or have an account, and using platforms facilitated by that organization in doing so, especially if your membership comes at no charge.

I'm curious to know if the poll in question ever went live, because if it did, then whatever IMDb staff involved was probably docked if not demoted if not fired, depending on the gravity of the issue, such as if it would make for ugly headlines, unnerved corporate partners of the company, or a decline in profit margin, as in potential decline of net worth.
