OVA listings

I have another question in this vein. How should OVAs be considered? If they are in the same format as an episode of the show, should they be listed as episodes, even though they were originally released on video instead of being aired on TV? Or should they be listed as separate video titles?

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: Multiple Series added as Seasons of 1 Series. Best way to seperate them?.

Hello, Brian.

OVA's are usually added as separate titles: made-for-video, TV or theatrical movies (depending on their initial release type and available information on the first screening). Examples:
Sûpâ Mario burazâzu: Pîchi-hime kyushutsu dai sakusen! (1986)
Hoshi no koe (2002)

If OVA was followed by the series it probably should be added as a sequel through complext connection addition, via this contact form

So if their initial release was definitely on made-for-video instead of being aired on TV, then it is best to list them separately as separate made-for-video titles right?

In a somewhat different situation, it seems as though IMDB is missing a title format designation. How do we lists made-for-video series? There is a designation for TV mini-series and a designation for made-for-video, but not where something was made for video yet split into episodes. This is not uncommon in anime. For instance the title "Hellsing Ultimate" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0495212/ is listed as a TV Mini-series on IMDB, however this series was intended for and released as a video, not a series to be aired on television. Given the need to list separate episodes, I'm guessing TV Mini-series is the best way to list these, even though it isn't accurate. But why doesn't IMDB have a category for made-for-video series?

Unfortunately for now IMDb does not have options for film or video series so they are added as franchises: separate titles connected through complex movie connections.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your post.

As mentioned by Nikolay, due to our existing title types - we're unable to easily display these title types, however IMDb is constantly being updated and we appreciate you raising this problem.

For the time being, you can connect separate titles together with the connections - instructions on these can be seen here:

Have a great day.
