What do you think was the best movie with an ensemble cast?

A minimum of 5 big name stars and a 8.0 IMDb rating. No serial movies. IE: Avengers, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Etc. (IMDB 8.0 ranking as of 12-02-20)

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls091385142/

I think the 8.0 rating is a little high.  My pick would be Sing but it's 7.1.  If this is IMDb Poll Board, it should be based on their choices alone - not a what other raters gave it.

It stays at 8 for now. 7.5 is a possibility. But no lower.
I know of at least 35 movies that fit the criteria at 7.5.

The poll says greatest
Sing is not on the radar as greatest. That 7.1 says it all. 7 is average.
Average Ensemble Movies of all Time!
You gotta know of one title that fits!

Most of the movies of mine that I have rated high don't even have ensemble casts of 5 or more... except RiffTrax Live: MST3K Reunion, an ensemble only if you consider all cast ever of MST3000 an ensemble.  It has an 8.1 rating!!!  It's the best I can give you.

Forrest Gump, Good Will Hunting, A Beautiful Mind, Catch Me If You Can and Black Swan are hardly ensemble films.

Definition: "In a dramatic production, an ensemble cast is one which comprises multiple principal actors and performers who are typically assigned roughly equal amounts of screen time."

But have a strong focus on 1-2 protagonists. They are not like Pulp Fiction and The Great Escape. Movies like JFK and All the President's Men also have a clear protagonist but at least there's a rich line of important supporting characters.

I also agree with NIA. A very high rating, and therefore a very limited set of movies to be considered, defeats the purpose of asking the Poll Board for their opinion. I can't think of a movie I'd like to suggest that meets the definition of ensemble film and the requirement of a 8.0 rating, either.

I agree some "ensemble casts" are more like publicity stunts... the amount of screentime has got to be relevant enough to make it a substantial roles (not some cameos or guest-appearances... so to speak)

It's a trick question, you mean stars that became names before the film or it doesn't matter. When The Godfather was made, none of Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall or Diane Keaton were big name stars. Coppola had the guts to hire them, he had the vision too.

And I made no distinction on Big Time at the time it was made. So if the movie itself made them "Big", so be it.

Just one more thing... how big should "big" be to be considered big?

Big in a leading man/woman way as opposed to character actors/actresses?
Big as a regular awards collector?
Big as a Hollywood movie star?

Steve Buscemi in my view is well known. He is "Big" Enough"
John Leguizamo too.
That type.
You may never be in a lead role but could qualify as "Big"

Again I don't appreciate how you put a lot of restrictions for a POLL BOARD, I had to do an advanced search to find a movie that fits.

I think:
Apocalypse Now is the one that best fit.

Most great ensemble films do not utilize a great number of stars. And how do YOU define what makes a big star? Do we need to really have to have our idea of movie stars match up with yours?

My definition Stephen is NOT narrow minded. Of that I can assure you. So inclusion will not be hampered by YOUR definitions. I defer to the IMDb STARmeter....Plus an extra 5000. If your not in the top 5000 that's OK. Up to 10,000 would be OK. It's my poll party, and you can cry if you want to. In the final decision making process is "The 4". If they don't like what I do. It's not Live.

"Life is like a box of STARmeters" "You never know what your gonna get"

Cinephile
Good Choice.
But only McDowell IS Big
The other stars are above the 10,000 Limit

I won't make the effort to search the Starmeter of every actor of the casting of each movie rated above 8 that I consider good. BTW, David Prowse (Darth Vader) plays in A Clockwork Orange and he is in the top 5000 that doesn't make 5 stars, but I wanted to precise that Malcolm Macdowell isn't the only top 5000 actor in the casting.

For me, Apocalypse now is an 8/10, I like while it is not my favorite movie, the others don't have an incredible cast.  Since the poll is "favorite ensemble cast" and not favorite movies, I can't suggest any of my top 10 movies exception Inception Interstellar, Goodfellas, but while these movies were excellent, the performance by the cast or the minor actors were "so so". The principal actors (Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro) of Goodfellas were great but the minor actors as I said were very "cliché".

A minimum of 5 big name stars.
How big? Please explain this part or give some examples or anything that helps me think of a film.

You see, in this generation, if an actor has millions of followers in Social Media, they are considered to be a star OR an actor with most Oscars.

So I'd suggest to please put a minimum requirement for it or something that is distinguishing.

Thank you.

That's the first thing I checked (the list), but still couldn't get it lol. but I'll try.

Here are some of the films I think might meet the conditions;

   1. The Departed (2006)

   2. Inception (2010)

   3. Django Unchained (2012)

   4. Reservoir Dogs (1992)

   5. Heat (1995)

   6. No Country for Old Men (2007)

   7. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

   8. Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood (2019)
  • Note: This almost has a 8.0 ratings.

   9. The Usual Suspects (1995)

   10. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2015)

   11. The Martian (2014)

   12. L.A. Confidential (1997)

I hope at least one of these would help.

All are my favorites except 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and 'L.A. Confidential'.

I hope you can add 10 film suggestions from one person, 'cause I'm suggesting all them 10.

Edit: But if you're asking for the most favorite, I'd say 'Heat' or 'The Departed'.
