(The following description will probably be revised in an attempt to make it less blatantly political.)

Senator John McCain died on Saturday, 25 August, 2018, at the age of 81. The U.S. Presidential candidate of the Republican Party in 2008, who chided his own supporters in defense of then-candidate Barack Obama, for years was known as "the maverick of the Senate." True to this reputation, the former Prisoner-of-War will often be remembered for, among many other things, casting, in 2017 when sick with terminal cancer, the deciding vote against President Trump's repeal of "Obamacare" legislation.

In honor of this American icon, which of these "mavericks" do you think best embodies the spirit of "an unorthodox or independent-minded person?"*

*The definition of "maverick," according to the Oxford Dictionary.

My vote:
Maverick (1957–1962)

James Garner's daughter, Gigi Garner, would be honored to have her father associated with Senator John McCain.

FYI:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Maverick
Samuel Augustus Maverick (July 23, 1803 – September 2, 1870) was a Texas lawyer, politician, land baron and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. His name is the source of the term "maverick," first cited in 1867, which means "independently minded." Various accounts of the origins of the term held that Maverick came to be considered independently minded by his fellow ranchers because he refused to brand his cattle, though it might have instead reflected a lack of interest in ranching. Unbranded cattle which were not part of the herd came to be labeled "mavericks". ...

Thanks, rock. The night before he died, a Republican speechwriter and commentator said that when McCain left Congress, the Congressional Republican spines went with him. Then, only hours before he died, Senator Flake, the other Senator from Arizona and another Republican, repeated that and said that was because all of the other Congressional backbones rested on McCain's. He will certainly be missed by people of many political stripes.

Any you and others are so right about Garner's "Maverick." Usually, I don't like when polls are landslides but I wouldn't mind at all if that happened with this one.
