Dividing the past Best Picture Oscar winners into groups of ten, which decade do you think is the best?

http://www.imdb.com/list/ls021295620/
http://www.imdb.com/poll/UdwZhVm939E/

* The years used are the eligibility years (the years the films were first released)

* There are 90 Best Picture winners because the first awards ceremony in 1929 had two different Best Picture awards

I don't even need to check, the 70's, seriously what can beat this streak:

Patton (first AFI Top 100 - 4th highest grossing film of the year)
The French Connection (AFI Top 100 - 2nd at the box office)
The Godfather (AFI Top 100 - IMDb Top 250 - 1st at the bo)
The Sting (IMDb Top 250 - 1st at the bo)
The Godfather Part II (AFI Top 100 - IMDb Top 250 - 7th at the bo)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (AFI's Top 100 - IMDb Top 250 - 3rd at the bo)
Rocky (AFI Top 100 - IMDb Top 250 - 1st at the bo)
Annie Hall (AFI Top 100 - IMDb Top 250 - 10th at the bo)
The Deer Hunter (AFI Top 100 - IMDb Top 250 - 9th at the bo)
Kramer vs. Kramer (1st at the bo)

10 movies, all at the Top 10 of the box-office, 9 AFI entries and 7 on IMDb Top 250, not sure there's a decade that beats that... not to mention that they're all acclaimed classics.

Right, but I changed it up a bit and defined the decades differently.

It's even better, because you basically defined the New Hollywood period, Oliver! is the only "oddity" there.

It would have been perfect if it started with the "9" and ended with the "8", imagine "The Deer Hunter" instead of "Annie Hall"

Definitely the 70's.  The two Godfather films stand alone, in my mind, as the two best films ever.  Then add Rocky and The Sting and you have some outstanding films.

'Great poll!

'Tough choice but probably either 1977-1986 or 1987-1996  -- or '67-'76. 'So good it's painful, lol.

I would choose the seventies. Both parts of it. When I look at oscar ceremonies in the seventies on youtube I just can't believe what classics DONT get an oscar. Some years there should be multiple oscars for best motion picture.

Oscars 1th Decade (1927-1937) 10th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1938.
Oscars 2th Decade (1938-1947) 20th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1948.
Oscars 3th Decade (1948-1957) 30th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1958.
Oscars 4th Decade (1958-1967) 40th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1968.
Oscars 5th Decade (1967-1977) 50th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1978.
Oscars 6th Decade (1977-1987) 60th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1988.
Oscars 7th Decade (1988-1997) 70th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1998.
Oscars 8th Decade (1998-2007) 80th Academy Awards ceremony held in 2008.
Oscars 9th Decade (2008-2017) 90th Academy Awards ceremony held in 2018.

The Oscars originally used an August 1st, 1927 through July 31st, 1928 eligibility period for the first year before converting to a normal calendar year after the 6th Oscars, which had an year and five months eligibility period, August 1st, 1932 through December 31st, 1933. Past eligibility periods total 90 years and 5 months with extra 5 months occurring in the first decade.

"Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927), Wings (1927)" - did you mean 1927?

The 1st Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 1927 and 1928 and took place on May 16, 1929. The 2nd Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films released between August 1, 1928, and July 31, 1929.

I would assume the 1927 award covers the best films released between August 1, 1926, and July 31, 1927 (Wings, 19 May 1927 (San Antonio, Texas) (premiere)).I would assume the 1928 award covers the best films released between August 1, 1927, and July 31, 1928 (Sunrise, 4 November 1927) (USA) .

Regardless, the span between the 1st Oscar ceremony and 90th Oscar ceremony is from May 16, 1929 to March 4th, 2018 is 89 years and 10 months. The first 9 decades will have 91 Oscar winners with 11 winners in the first decade. The past eligibility periods for these ceremonies total 90 years and 5 months with an extra 5 months occurring in the first decade. The recipient of the Best Picture at the 90th Oscars should be included in the poll in the 9th decade, once announced.

FYC
Wings and Sunrise are reversed in order in your answer options. Wings won the first Academy Award for Best Picture at the first annual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award ceremony in 1929

As I said, I divided the 90 winners from the past ceremonies into groups of ten. I do not intend to include the upcoming winner.

Wings and Sunrise were both awarded at the first ceremony. They were not awarded for two different years, but for different merits.

I see from Wikipedia that the Academy retroactively decided that Wings was the Best Picture winner, but so far I am going with IMDb's version that there were "two separate awards for Best Picture".

I put Wings first as suggested since it has a more official status.

If this poll does not run before the Oscars I may reconsider adding the upcoming winner.

Thanks, for the clarification, I see how the first two were divided now. "Among its honors, Sunrise won the award for Unique and Artistic Picture and Wings won the award for Outstanding Picture (now known as Best Picture). These two categories at the time were regarded equally as the top award of the night intended to honor different and important aspects of superior filmmaking. The next year, the Academy dropped the Unique and Artistic Picture award, and decided retroactively that the award won by Wings was the highest honor that could be awarded."

I'm surprised by the winning option, 1997-2006 is full of winners that are often considered less deserving than the other nominees or just not very popular at all like Titanic, Shakespeare in Love, Crash, Chicago
